Overview |
IBM SVC, a member of the IBM Storwize® family, is a combined hardware and software storage virtualization system with a single point of control for storage resources. SVC includes many functions traditionally deployed separately in disk systems and by including these in a virtualization system, SVC standardizes functions across virtualized storage for greater flexibility and potentially lower costs. SVC improves business application availability and delivers greater resource utilization so you can get the most from your storage resources, and achieve a simpler, more scalable, cost-efficient IT infrastructure.
SVC Storage Engine Model DH8 and SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24F deliver increased performance, expanded connectivity, compression acceleration, and additional internal flash storage capacity.
SVC Storage Engine Model DH8, which is based on IBM System x server technology, consists of one Xeon E5 v2 Series eight-core processor and 32 GB of memory. It includes 1 Gb Ethernet ports standard for 1 Gb iSCSI connectivity and supports up to three I/O adapter cards for 8 Gb FC and 10 Gb iSCSI/FCoE connectivity. It also includes two integrated AC power supplies and battery units replacing the uninterruptable power supply feature required on the previous generation storage engine models.
The Model DH8 storage engine offers several features for Real-time Compression workloads, including a second Xeon E5 v2 Series eight-core processor with 32 GB of memory and up to two compression accelerator cards for hardware-assisted compression.
SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24F supports up to twenty-four 2.5-inch 12 Gb SAS flash (solid state) drives. Up to two expansion enclosures are supported by a Model DH8 node pair or I/O group delivering up to 48 flash drives and 38.4 TB of internal raw capacity.
SVC Storage Engines can be clustered to help deliver greater performance, bandwidth, and scalability. An SVC clustered system can contain up to four node pairs or I/O groups. Model DH8 storage engines can be added into existing SVC clustered systems that include previous generation storage engine models.
All SVC functional capabilities are provided through IBM Storwize Family Software for IBM SAN Volume Controller. For additional information on SVC functions capabilities and software, refer to the materials listed in the Reference information section.

Hardware requirements
Each SVC Storage Engine, also referred to as a node, is an individual server in a SVC system. Nodes must be ordered and installed in pairs as a node pair or I/O group. Both nodes in a node pair must have the same physical configuration.
SVC SFF Expansion Enclosures are shared between both nodes in the node pair. A node pair can have one or two shared expansion enclosures. Two expansion enclosures shared by a node pair are not required to have the same physical configuration.
Use of the IBM Real-time Compression software function requires the second CPU with 32 GB RAM feature (feature number AH1B) and a minimum of one Compression Accelerator card (feature number AH1A).
Software requirements
SVC machines require IBM Storwize Family Software for SAN Volume Controller version 7.3, or later, for operation.
SVC software is preloaded by IBM on SVC machines. Use of the software is entitled through the acquisition of a SVC Base Software license. Use of optional features offered with the SVC software is entitled through the acquisition of their respective licenses.
For additional information on SVC software, refer to the announcement listed in the Reference information section.
Compatibility
Model DH8 storage engines can be added into existing SVC clustered systems that include previous generation storage engine models. All nodes within a clustered system must be using the same version of SVC software. An SVC clustered system can contain up to four node pairs.
For a comprehensive list of supported environments, devices, and configurations, refer to the IBM System Storage Interoperation Center (SSIC) at
Limitations
Second CPU and 32 GB RAM (feature number AH1B): This optional feature provides performance benefits only when the IBM Real-time Compression software function is used.

SAS Enclosure Attach Card (feature number AH13): Only two of the four SAS ports on the SAS Enclosure Attach Card are used for expansion enclosure attachment. The other two SAS ports are inactive.
SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure (Model 24F): Only one SAS port per canister is used for attachment to the SVC storage engine. The other SAS port is inactive.
Shipments to India: SVC Model 24F expansion enclosures shipped prior to the published planned availability date for India are not compliant with India certification and product labeling requirements.
If you did not acquire your machine from IBM as a direct shipment to India, you are responsible for validating the machine has the appropriate certifications and product labels.
Contact your IBM sales representative or Business Partner for assistance with this validation.
Planning information

Warranty period
One year (including the battery)
An IBM part or feature installed during the initial installation of an IBM machine is subject to a full warranty effective on the date of installation of the machine. An IBM part or feature that replaces a previously installed part or feature assumes the remainder of the warranty period for the replaced part or feature. An IBM part or feature added to a machine without replacing a previously installed part or feature is subject to a full warranty effective on its date of installation. Unless specified otherwise, the warranty period, type of warranty service, and service level of a part or feature are the same as those for the machine in which it is installed.
Warranty service
If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM website. Certain machines contain remote support capabilities for direct problem reporting, remote problem determination, and resolution with IBM. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies.
