Description

Top rule

Developer for z/OS 15.0

Developer for z/OS provides essential developer-focused capabilities using industry standards to help simplify the development of z/OS programs written in COBOL, PL/I, High Level Assembler, C/C++, JCL, and Java, deployable to CICS, IMS, Db2, batch, and z/OS UNIX®.

Developer for z/OS 15.0 integrates with existing IBM Z development processes, including problem determination, project management, testing solutions, and modern and legacy source management systems. It offers a wide set of capabilities for the developer.

With version 15.0, Developer for z/OS is built on an Eclipse 4.8 (Photon level) base to enable integration with IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua 3.2 along with other IBM offerings, such as IBM z/OS Connect, IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence, IBM CICS Explorer®, and IBM z/OS Explorer tools.

Developer for z/OS 15.0 enhancements include:

  • Additional environment customization for developers that prefer the popular dark theme support.
  • Individual and team usability features such as local property groups and the capability to use menu manager actions when working with local projects.
  • Integration enhancements with Dependency Based Build to improve the experience with Git as a source code manager.
  • Multiple client-driven zUnit enhancements. zUnit is an automated unit testing framework for recording, running, and verifying Enterprise COBOL and unit test cases. Version 15.0 of zUnit delivers:
    • The capability to run a test case from zUnit test case editor for local Git or RTC projects.
    • Program-to-program call support for COBOL, CICS, and batch Db2, enabling recording and testing of dynamic program calls.

Significant z/OS Debugger enhancements include:

  • With version 15.0, the z/OS Debugger Eclipse client is built on an Eclipse 4.8 (Photon) base to enable integration with IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua 3.2 and other Eclipse 4.8 features and plug-ins.
  • Support for 64-bit COBOL application debugging. z/OS application developers can now debug addressing mode (AMODE) 64 applications compiled with IBM Enterprise COBOL 6.3 (with the LP64 compiler option) in Debug Tool compatibility mode, which enables z/OS application developers to access data items greater than the existing AMODE 31 data size limits without changes to the program logic.
  • Support for 64-bit C/C++ application debugging. This capability is supported with Debug Tool compatibility mode.
  • The Debug Profile Editor offers both an outline, and a quick outline view to easily maneuver to the different editor sections and settings.

Code coverage enhancements

With the capability to use zUnit for test automation early in the development cycle, developers need confirmation that code changes are adequately tested. Code coverage provides assessments to validate that code changes are being tested and assists in determining the effectiveness of testing. Code coverage enhancements include the following:

  • For PL/I programs compiled with LISTVIEW(SOURCE), PL/I developers can view code coverage for code in include files. This gives code coverage results in context, versus having to correlate code coverage results between the program source and individual include files.
  • Headless code coverage supports single letter parameters to help simplify invocation through command line or using the startup key in JCL.

IBM z/OS Explorer is integrated into IBM Developer for z/OS and surfaces value-add capabilities through this integration. z/OS Explorer enhancements include the following client requested enhancements:

  • Preserve UNIX System Services filters in the Export Remote JAR dialogue
  • A setting to avoid loading the debug manager when it is not used to avoid errors in rescomm log
  • Cancel button selected by default in delete confirmation dialogue
  • Capability of Remote Scratchpad, Remote Monitor, and Remote System Details views to show user-defined actions
  • z/OS Explorer host improvements to display an alert when a process is in timeout state for a long time

z/OS Explorer includes Remote Systems Explorer APIs (RSE API). RSE API is a collection of REST APIs that enable a client to work with components of the z/OS host system, including MVS data sets, z/OS UNIX files and commands, Job Entry Subsystem (JES) jobs, and more.

RSE API has been enhanced as follows:

  • APIs have been added that:
    • Issue time-sharing option (TSO) commands
    • Download content for MVS data set members as binary
    • Perform MVS PDS, PDS member, and SEQ search
    • Enable MVS raw content streaming upload and download
    • Perform encoding validation
    • Return server version
    • Support the common event adapter (CEA) gateway
  • Existing APIs have been improved with better:
    • Unix commands output format
    • Unix files search API output format
    • Logging support

Developer for z/OS deprecations and removals

Generic Service Client removal: As a follow-on to the deprecation of the Generic Service Client in IBM Developer for z/OS 14.2.0, the Generic Service Client is removed from Developer for z/OS 15.0. There are many commonly used alternatives available for SOAP and REST API testing, such as Postman, Apache JMeter, SoapUI, Katalon, and so on.

IBM Service Flow Modeler removal: As a follow-on to the deprecation of the Service Flow Modeler in IBM Developer for z/OS 14.2.3, the Service Flow Modeler is removed.

Menu Manager integration with Host Access Transformation Services (HATS) removal: Developer for z/OS. 15.0 no longer supports Menu Manager integration with HATS rich client applications.

IBM Debug Tool plug-in deprecation: IBM z/OS Debugger 14.2.2 introduced the Debug Profile User Interface, which unifies and simplifies configuring remote debugging. Any existing profiles in your workspace are automatically migrated to the z/OS Debugger Profiles view when opened. This user interface replaces the five legacy IBM Debug Tool plug-ins, which are deprecated and will be removed in the next release. Any existing profiles in your workspace will be automatically migrated to the z/OS Debugger Profiles view when opened, including:

  • DTCN profiles are replaced with CICS profiles in the z/OS Debugger Profiles view.
  • DTSP profiles are replaced with non-CICS profiles in the z/OS Debugger Profiles view.
  • The Instrument JCL for Debugging plug-in is replaced with z/OS batch run time using existing JCL launch configurations.
  • The z/OS Debugger Code Coverage plug-in is replaced by Compiled Code Coverage collection provided by Developer for z/OS (including Enterprise Edition) and Debug for z/OS Eclipse clients and the headless Compiled Code Coverage collector. Any existing results can be imported into the Code Coverage Results view using the Import Debug Tool Code Coverage result action.
  • The IBM Debug Tool Load Module Analyzer plug-in is deprecated and will be removed in the next release. IBM File Manager for z/OS (also part of IBM Application Delivery Foundation for z/OS) offers a load module utility that has more capabilities.

Dependency Based Build for z/OS 1.1

Dependency Based Build for z/OS 1.1 provides the capabilities to automate the build process for traditional z/OS applications that are developed in programming languages such as COBOL and PL/I. Application development teams can standardize process across platforms with modern software configuration management and continuous integration tools such as Git and Jenkins.

Dependency Based Build for z/OS 1.1 enhancements include:

  • The Dependency Based Build web application is available as a container, enabling tasks such as defining build steps in a Red Hat® OpenShift®-based pipeline instead of invoking an on-premises instance of the web application.
  • Design and documentation of the Dependency Resolver component are available to assist in managing source code dependency resolution. These changes also support multiple dependency scanners, including support for zUnit.
  • Dependency Based Build for z/OS 1.1 includes Z Open Automation Utilities 1.1.0.

Dependency Based Build also is a component of IBM Developer for z/OS Enterprise Edition and IBM Wazi Developer for Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
