IBM z/VSE V6.2 offers new capabilities and hardware options

z/VSE® V6.2 and CICS® TS for z/VSE V2.2 have been generally available since December 1, 2017. Additional functionality has been introduced for on-line transaction processing, security, and connectivity. Clients may now even better integrate z/VSE in a heterogeneous environment using web-based business solutions and z/VSE connectors.

Together with improved ease-of-use and exploitation of the latest IBM Z® and IBM® System Storage™ technology, z/VSE V6.2 may help clients with growing z/VSE workloads, and allow them to better protect their investments in the z/VSE platform.

This announcement letter summarizes functional z/VSE enhancements and hardware support made available since Software Announcement A19-0181, dated April 23, 2019, IBM z/VSE V6.2 new hardware support.

The following hardware support is available with z/VSE V6.2:

Exploitation of latest IBM System Storage technology

  • z/VSE V6.2 supports the IBM System Storage TS7700 R5.0.
  • z/VSE V6.2 supports the DS8900F disk, a member of the IBM DS8900 family.

Exploitation of latest IBM z15™ and IBM z15 Model T02 technology

The support is already available with z/VSE V6.2.

  • z/VSE supports the configurable Crypto Express7S, which allows for data encryption and SSL acceleration. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) with a Crypto Express7S may result in accelerated data-in-flight encryption.
  • z/VSE supports the FICON® Express16S+ and FICON Express16SA as well as the OSA-Express6S/7S family.
  • z/VSE supports IBM Fibre Channel Endpoint Security, which provides server authentication and data encryption to help protect the integrity and confidentiality of data.
  • z/VSE systems can benefit from z/VM® support for System Recovery Boost, which accelerates the restoration of service from planned and unplanned outages.

The following enhancements are available via z/VSE V6.2 continuous delivery:

IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.2

IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.2 was updated to the 2.2.6 + 2.2.7 level with APAR PH17821.

Update for VSE Crypto Services

OpenSSL 1.0.2h was updated to the 1.1.1d level with APAR DY47825.

z/VSE Language Environment® enhancements

Support is provided for new Japanese era REIWA with APARs PH11491, PH11896, and PH16107.

z/VSE V6.2 supports IBM Z:

  • IBM z15 (z15™)
  • IBM z15 Model T02 (z15 Model T02)
  • IBM z14® (z14)
  • IBM z14 Model ZR1 (z14 Model ZR1)
  • IBM z13® (z13®)
  • IBM z13s® (z13s®)
  • IBM zEnterprise® EC12 (zEC12)
  • IBM zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12)
  • IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196)
  • IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114)

z/VSE V6.2 can run in an LPAR image, or as a guest in any supported z/VM release. z/VSE V6.2 is the preferred follow-on product for clients with z/VSE V6.1, z/VSE V5, z/VSE V4, z/VSE V3, or VSE/ESA installed. Upgrading to z/VSE V6.2 can be done using initial installation or Fast Service Upgrade (FSU). FSU can be used only if upgrading from a z/VSE V6.1 system. Otherwise an initial installation is required.

z/VSE V6.2 offers Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC) pricing metrics, including a subcapacity option, for the z15, z14, z13, zEC12, and z196 servers. IBM offers Advanced Entry Workload License Charge (AEWLC) pricing metrics, including a subcapacity option, for the z15 Model T02, z14 Model ZR1, z13s, zBC12, and z114 servers. The entry models (capacity setting A01) of the z15 Model T02, z14 Model ZR1, z13s, zBC12, and z114 will be priced using zSeries Entry License Charge (zELC) for their IBM monthly license charge software.

z/VSE V6.2 enhancements using continuous delivery

z/VSE V6.2 and CICS TS for z/VSE V2.2 have been generally available since December 1, 2017. Additional functionality has been introduced for on-line transaction processing, security, and connectivity. Clients may now even better integrate z/VSE in a heterogeneous environment using web-based business solutions and z/VSE connectors.

Together with improved ease-of-use and exploitation of the latest IBM Z and IBM System Storage technology, z/VSE V6.2 may help clients with growing z/VSE workloads, and allow them to better protect their investments in the z/VSE platform.

z/VSE now further extends the capabilities of z/VSE V6.2 with additional enhancements using continuous delivery:

Update for VSE Crypto Services

  • OpenSSL is an open source project that provides a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) implementation, and key management utilities. See the OpenSSL website for details.
  • OpenSSL on z/VSE is now upgraded using OpenSSL 1.1.1d. With this upgrade, OpenSSL on z/VSE provides support for TLS 1.2 and encryption in Galois Counter Mode (GCM) for highest available security.
  • OpenSSL on z/VSE also provides a z/OS® compatible SSL programming interface, which allows existing z/VSE SSL/TLS applications, such as the z/VSE Connector Server and the LDAP client, to run transparently with OpenSSL.
  • Although OpenSSL provides software-based encryption for supported algorithms and key lengths, the z/VSE implementation transparently uses cryptographic hardware, when available, for improved performance. Thus clients benefit from IBM zEnterprise cryptographic hardware and its acceleration of cryptographic operations.
  • The z/VSE SSL/TLS implementation is delivered as part of the z/VSE Crypto Services component.
  • The OpenSSL 1.1.1d upgrade is available for z/VSE V6.2 with APAR DY47825.

IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.2

  • IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.2 was updated to the 2.2.6 + 2.2.7 level with APAR PH17821.

z/VSE Language Environment enhancements

  • Language Environment for z/VSE (LE/VSE) was enhanced to support the new Japanese era REIWA, which began on May 1, 2019, and thus fulfills client requirements.
  • With APAR PH11491 the LE/VSE Date and Time Services, which support picture character term <JJJJ> in the picture string, were enhanced to support the new Japanese era REIWA. For details on the LE callable service CEECBLDY, CEEDATE, CEEDATM, and CEESECS see the LE/VSE Programming Reference.
  • With APARs PH11896 and PH16107 the LE/VSE C Run-Time Japanese DBCS locales Ja_JP. IBM-930 and Ja_JP. IBM-939 were enhanced to support the new Japanese era REIWA. For details on the C functions setlocale(), strftime(), strptime(), and wcsftime() see the LE/VSE C Run-Time Library Reference.

Exploitation of latest IBM System Storage technology

* z/VSE V6.2 supports the IBM System Storage TS7700 R5.0.

* z/VSE V6.2 supports the DS8900 family. The DS8900F host adapters include support for Fibre Channel Endpoint Security.

Exploitation of latest IBM z15 and IBM z15 Model T02 technology

The support is already available with the general availability version of z/VSE V6.2.

  • Configurable Crypto Express7S is supported for data encryption and SSL acceleration. z/VSE supports the Crypto Express7S adapter in both IBM Common Cryptographic Architecture (CCA) coprocessor and accelerator mode. It can be used in an LPAR and a z/VM guest environment.
  • FICON Express16S+ and FICON Express16SA both support a link data rate of 16 gigabits per second (Gbps) and autonegotiation to 4 or 8 Gbps for synergy with existing switches, directors, and storage devices. z/VSE transparently supports the FICON Express16S+ and the FICON Express16SA.
  • z/VSE transparently supports the OSA-Express6S and the OSA-Express7S family.
  • IBM Fibre Channel Endpoint Security is an end-to-end solution to protect and encrypt data flowing on Fibre Channel links between an authorized server and storage devices or between IBM Z platforms over FICON channel-to-channel connections. This feature is transparent to z/VSE.
  • z/VSE systems can benefit from z/VM support for System Recovery Boost, which accelerates the restoration of service from planned and unplanned outages.

z/VSE service

  • z/VSE product and PTF orders from IBM Shopz are available only via internet and DVD.
  • IBM recommends that clients apply all PTFs as listed in the Recommended Service Level (RSL). The latest RSLs are shown on the z/VSE Support web page.
  • z/VSE V6.2 is the only z/VSE release in service.

  • Ingolf's z/VSE Blog has been hosted on the IBM developerWorks® Connections Platform. This service was officially shut down on March 31, 2020.
