IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 delivers enhancements to expand data set support and help ease development of Go applications on the IBM z/OS platform

PDF versionPDF

At a glance

IBM® Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 enables organizations to run the Go programming language on the IBM z/OS® platform. Enhancements in this release include the following:

  • Pruned module graphs to include only immediate module dependencies
  • Two new functions in the unsafe package: unsafe.Add and unsafe.Slice
  • Conversions from slice to array pointer
  • URL query parsing
  • Support for access to Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) data sets
  • Additional improvements and bug fixes, including verification improvements to crypto/x509

Overview

Modernization is about delivering the best value to your clients, more quickly. This includes reducing the cost of maintaining your existing applications by updating or extending them. With the latest version of IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go, IBM brings the benefits of the popular open-source Go language to accelerate in-place modernization on z/OS. Go's lightweight characteristics can enable application modernization and development of cloud-native applications in addition to optimizing performance.

IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 brings several significant features from the open-source community. These include support for lazy module loading to avoid processing irrelevant dependencies, new functions for safer pointer arithmetic, and numerous additional improvements and bug fixes. In addition, this Go on z/OS release comes with support for direct access to VSAM data sets so that clients can access their existing VSAM record data more easily.

New features in IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 from the Go 1.17 open-source community include the following:

  • Pruned module graphs. For modules that specify Go 1.17, or later, in their go.mod file, their module graphs include only the immediate dependencies of other Go 1.17 modules, not their full transitive dependencies. This helps to avoid the need to download or read go.mod files for irrelevant dependencies, and can make it easier to develop Go applications.
  • Two new functions in the unsafe package can make it easier for programs to conform to the unsafe.Pointer rules:
    • unsafe.Add enables safer pointer arithmetic.
    • unsafe.Slice enables safer conversions of pointers to slices.
  • Conversions from slice to array pointer. This is an extension to the language type conversion rules to enable conversions from slices to array pointers, provided the slice is at least as large as the array at run time.
  • URL query parsing. Previously the net/url and net/http packages accepted ";" (semicolon) as a setting separator in URL queries, in addition to "&" (ampersand). Now, settings with non-percent-encoded semicolons are rejected and net/http servers log a warning to Server.ErrorLog when encountering one in a request URL.
  • Numerous additional improvements and bug fixes, including verification improvements to crypto/x509.

Support for access to VSAM data sets

This release includes support within a Go program for direct access to the VSAM data set type. You no longer need CGO to access your VSAM data.

Recordio is a Go module that provides a way to access and manipulate VSAM databases directly from Go on z/OS. Operations are implemented through the z/OS Language Environment® interfaces without any requirement to call C from Go. Operations include:

  • Opening, closing, and reopening VSAM databases
  • Record, reading, and writing records
  • Locating records
  • Updating records
  • Deleting records

Inputs and outputs from these operations are uniform byte slices, which eliminates the need for error-prone size specifications. Various utility functions are also included for converting back and forth between byte slices and structs, so that record types may be programmed as Go structs.

Use cases for IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17

From early adopters of IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Go, a number of use cases have emerged, including the following:

  • Modernization in place. Capability to develop APIs, plug-ins, and wrappers to extend business-critical applications using Go for faster delivery, ease of maintenance, and lower cost.
  • Enable popular Go applications on z/OS. Capability of applications written in Go on another platform to run more efficiently, securely, and with higher performance on z/OS.
  • Interoperate with middleware and applications written in other languages. Capability to communicate and integrate with existing middleware through z/OS Connect APIs and applications written in other languages via cgo.
  • Develop new applications. Capability to build applications that are more lightweight, use less system resources, and provide better overall performance.

Open Enterprise SDK for Go 1.17 is available without charge from Shopz and is downloadable and installable through the familiar System Modification Program Extended (SMP/E) install tool. There is an option to receive service and support by ordering IBM Subscription and Support for a charge.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud 8.4.3 on Microsoft Azure

PDF versionPDF

At a glance

IBM Spectrum® Virtualize for Public Cloud software delivers a powerful solution for creating hybrid multicloud architectures, extending on-premises appliances to public clouds, or independently deploying IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud to manage data on the cloud just like on-premises.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.3 adds the following benefits:

  • Support for up to two nodes in a cluster on Microsoft Azure
  • Support for up to 31 Microsoft Azure managed disk volumes provisioned to a cluster on Azure
  • Support for up to 922 TB of storage in a single cluster on Azure
  • Data reduction pools with deduplication
  • Support for software-based compression
  • Safeguarded Copy support
  • All FlashCopy® and replication capabilities, such as Gobal and Metro Mirror, can be used either between on-premises and the cloud or between cloud data centers

Overview

IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud 8.4.3 delivers support for Microsoft Azure. With IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud 8.4.3 users are able to deploy a highly available two-node cluster running IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud on supported Microsoft Azure virtual machines (VMs). This is an all-inclusive, bring your own license (BYOL) software offering that provides the ability to virtualize, optimize, and provision supported Azure Managed Disk to applications requiring the performance of block storage in the cloud with the added efficiencies that IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud brings to native infrastructure as a service (IaaS) provided by Microsoft Azure.

To help clients reduce and optimize provisioned Azure Managed Disk storage, data reduction pools can be created with support for software compression and deduplication. These features give clients the ability to both compress and deduplicate data for significant savings in Azure Managed Disk capacity.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud 8.4.3 is a fully inclusive license with a flat per tebibyte licensing model, supported on Microsoft Azure. It can be purchased through Passport Advantage as either a monthly term license or as a perpetual license. Through AAS, the software can be ordered with IBM FlashSystem® hardware as a perpetual license. Support for Microsoft Azure enables deployment of IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud on supported Microsoft Azure VMs, deployable through the Azure Marketplace. Through Azure Resource Management Templates designed for IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud, clients can deploy a cluster on the public cloud in just minutes with an existing Azure Virtual Network.

Clients will be able to create hybrid multicloud solutions, offering the ability to transfer block data between on-premises data centers or private clouds using any IBM Spectrum Virtualize-based appliance, such as IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC), all IBM FlashSystem appliances, IBM Storwize® family appliances, and VersaStack. Clients can create secondary copies of their on-premises data in the public cloud for disaster recovery, workload redistribution, or migration of data from on-premises data centers to the public cloud. Consistent APIs, CLIs, and UIs between private and public clouds enable clients to provision and manage data on public clouds in the same way they do on-premises. Additionally, with deduplication and compression with data reduction pools, clients will have similar optimization capabilities on cloud infrastructures as they do on-premises.
