IBM Developer for z/OS 15.0.3 and IBM Dependency Based Build 1.1.2 deliver enhancements to help boost developer efficiency and modernize IBM z/OS development

PDF versionPDF

Overview

IBM Developer for z/OS and IBM Dependency Based Build are DevOps tools that are designed to modernize the application development process on IBM z/OS and increase development team efficiency. The adoption of DevOps practices can enable development teams to embrace lean and agile methodologies to alleviate skill gaps and respond more quickly to market demands.

Developer for z/OS gives application developers a wide range of capabilities to develop and maintain z/OS applications. Developers can support programs in COBOL, PL/I, HLASM, Java™, C/C++, and REXX using an Eclipse integrated development environment to code, debug, unit test, and analyze their programs.

Enhancements to Developer for z/OS 15.0.1, 15.0.2, and 15.0.3 include the following:

  • REXX editor to assist developers in writing and understanding REXX programs
  • Support for the latest language and z/OS versions, including z/OS 2.5, Enterprise COBOL for z/OS 6.3, and Enterprise PL/I for z/OS 5.3
  • An improved user build experience for users of both IBM Dependency Based Build and IBM Engineering Workflow Management
  • IBM Job Entry Subsystem (JES) enhancements that provide insights into active jobs to assist in understanding system performance
  • Developer for z/OS next-generation Telnet 3270 Remote Connection Emulator to offer a more modern interface and improved usability, initially supported on Microsoft Windows™ only
  • Expanded IBM z/OS Automated Unit Testing Framework (ZUnit) test-case recording to support additional z/OS subsystems and data stores, IBM job control language (JCL) statement types, COBOL data structure statements, and enhanced usability features
  • IBM z/OS Debugger Go language support to debug Go applications in Eclipse and additional code-coverage capabilities

Dependency Based Build is a framework designed to simplify the code-building process on z/OS to give development teams the option to choose a modern software configuration management (SCM) solution such as Git and continuous integration (CI) tools such as Jenkins to build traditional z/OS applications written in COBOL and PL/I.

New capabilities in Dependency Based Build 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 include the following:

  • Capability to install the Dependency Based Build web application into a Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) cluster through an operator
  • Support for "report only" mode when running Dependency Based Build z/OS command APIs
  • Capability of the Dependency Based Build source code scanner to identify programs with IBM MQ call statements
  • A new interactive web UI for the Dependency Based Build web application with a more modern appearance that can provide sorting and filtering capabilities and ease artifact deletion from the UI
