Overview

Top rule

IBM Db2 for z/OS Data Gate is a new way for IBM Z users to deliver data originating in Db2 for z/OS. It simplifies delivery of Db2 for z/OS data without requiring direct access to Db2 for z/OS - and without impact to source systems on IBM Z. It provides an integrated, resilient, standardized approach, designed to be more reliable, less complex, and less expensive than customized solutions. It supports applications that require read-only access to Db2 for z/OS data, alone or in combination with data from other sources. IBM Db2 Data Gate is optimized for delivery of Db2 for z/OS data to targets on IBM Cloud™ Pack for Data.

A fundamental goal of IBM Cloud Pak for Data is to collect, organize, and analyze data across the enterprise, for the purpose of accelerating the development of analytics and AI applications. IBM Db2 Data Gate simplifies these efforts.

IBM Cloud Pak for Data is optimized to integrate within hybrid cloud deployment models including on-premises, private and public clouds, and in preintegrated systems. IBM Db2 Data Gate therefore facilitates the use of Db2 for z/OS data in all hybrid cloud scenarios provided by Cloud Pak for Data, enabling a microservices consumption model for Z data in an efficient, integrated, and easy to use way.

Db2 for z/OS is the core transactional database engine used by IBM Z clients throughout the world. With Db2 for z/OS Data Gate, Db2 for z/OS remains the core transactional processing engine storing and consistently managing critical data for core applications. Clients want the ability to leverage data that originates on IBM Z for information-driven projects that run on non-IBM Z platforms. Many organizations have embarked on real-time replication projects to copy data from Db2 for z/OS to various targets, including traditional relational database management system data warehouses, Hadoop data lakes, Kafka streaming hubs, and so forth. These targets require management efforts to maintain data currency.

IBM Db2 Data Gate synchronizes data from Db2 for z/OS to improve its ability to make it securely available within IBM Db2 Warehouse on IBM Cloud Pak or IBM Cloud Pak for Data Db2. Db2 Warehouse supports data-intensive, complex query processing while Cloud Pak for Data Db2 supports high-frequency, simple read requests. Clients have a choice of targets for Db2 for z/OS data based on specific applications.

IBM Db2 Data Gate V1.1 delivers synchronized data from Db2 for z/OS to targets on IBM Cloud Pak for Data with the following key capabilities:

  • IBM Db2 Data Gate provisions and enables a service on Cloud Pak for Data.
  • Targets can be Db2 Warehouse on IBM Cloud Pak for Data or Cloud Pak for Data Db2, relational databases that deliver advanced data management and analytics capabilities.

Description

Top rule

IBM Db2 for z/OS Data Gate offers an end-to-end solution to ensure Db2 for z/OS data is available and synchronized from sources on IBM Z to targets optimized on IBM Cloud Pak for Data. IBM technology is used to directly capture change logs from Db2 for z/OS and apply the data to either Db2 Warehouse on IBM Cloud Pak for Data or Cloud Pak for Data Db2. Processing is fully zIIP enabled to ensure that there is little impact to general processing on IBM Z. Targets are determined based on consuming applications and are fully optimized to ensure low latency and high throughput.

Currency between the replicated copy of Db2 for z/OS data and the source system on IBM Z is maintained by a synchronization protocol between Db2 for z/OS and Cloud Pak for Data Db2 or Db2 Warehouse on IBM Cloud Pak for Data. This integrated, low-latency, high-throughput asynchronous replication protocol contains numerous optimization features. Data in the target Db2 systems can be updated and new data inserted, but none of these changes are propagated back to Db2 for z/OS, which retains ownership of its data in terms of capability to change it and insert new data.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Accessibility Compliance Reports (previously known as a VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance to standards, including the Worldwide Consortium Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, European Standard EN 301 349, and US Section 508, can be found on the IBM Accessibility Conformance Report Request website.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
