Features and benefits
Custom application development
IBM Content Foundation is open and flexible. By using the provided APIs described below, users (including business partners) can create custom applications to deliver a wide range of business benefits.
- Java , .Net, and web services APIs provide complete access to capabilities of the IBM FileNet Content Platform Engine. Users can leverage these APIs to deliver solutions that provide very specific and fine-grained control over content.
- The IBM Content Navigator toolkit aids in the rapid development and deployment of applications by delivering a rich toolkit for building user interfaces and has an extensive palate of dynamic visual ECM components based on the Dojo standard.
- IBM Content Foundation delivers both Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) client and server support enabling its users to span multiple vendors' repositories and off-the-shelf third-party applications.
Document management
IBM Content Foundation delivers an extensive set of capabilities that support the spectrum of document management and publication requirements, from the most simple to the extremely large and complex. You get the flexibility to drive document publication processes for electronic content authoring. In addition, IBM Content Foundation provides rich versioning and lifecycle capabilities to support control, security, and consistency of documents throughout their publishing processes.
IBM Content Foundation supports an extensive object model to:
- Manage complex taxonomies using extensive metadata, organize content into folders, or use flexible links and relationships between documents while maintaining integrity.
- Support document types including Microsoft™ Office documents, web pages, photos, voice data, images, process definitions, templates, and others.
- Support advanced document management such as the creation of technical publications. With the DITA standard, hundreds or even thousands of subject matter experts can collaborate in the creation of complex documents intended for subsequent publication.
- Support a framework for time and event-based retention, disposal, and preservation:
- ECM administrators can set default retention periods for each document class within the system, and can perform retention-based bulk updates and deletions from administrative applications.
- Management of policies, legal holds, and the delivery of user actions to participate in these processes are managed through add-on offerings specialized for this purpose, for example, offerings provided by IBM Global Retention Policy and Schedule Management, and IBM Atlas eDiscovery Process Management.
Platform consolidation
By providing a foundation for content federation, which is the connection of content silos, IBM Content Foundation supports visibility, access, and interoperability with diverse business process and storage systems. IBM Content Foundation also supports use cases for transactional content, business content, and pervasive content. As enterprises tackle the challenge of unifying and consolidating their disparate systems that have developed over time, IBM Content Foundation presents a single solution for managing content from multiple repositories across the enterprise.
IBM Content Navigator and CMIS
- Users are able to search, browse, and use documents in third-party repositories, which support CMIS alongside IBM Content Foundation managed documents. This enables users and applications to begin the IBM Content Foundation adoption process before considering unifying metadata models or migrating content.
IBM FileNet Content Federation Services
- FileNet Content Federation Services provides a single, unified metadata model in IBM Content Foundation for enterprise content residing in multiple repositories.
- FileNet Content Federation Services federates content from multiple repositories into the IBM Content Foundation Enterprise Catalog.
- FileNet Content Federation Services for Content Services federates content with FileNet Content Services into IBM Content Foundation.
- FileNet Content Federation Services for Content Manager OnDemand federates content with IBM Content Manager OnDemand into IBM Content Foundation.
- FileNet Content Federation Services for Image Services federates content with IBM FileNet Images Services into IBM Content Foundation. FileNet Content Federation Services for Image Services also supports bidirectional federation.
- Bulk move for storage area migration
- IBM Content Foundation provides a new storage area management capability, which enables moving managed documents from one managed storage area to another. This includes moving content files between file stores, database stores, and supported protected storage devices.
- It also allows the migration of content files from FileNet Content Federation Services connected repositories to IBM Content Foundation native storage as the last phase of repository consolidation.
IBM Content Integrator
- A nonchargeable license for IBM Content Integrator is available if integration or federation services are limited to six IBM ECM repositories (Image Services, Content Services, Content Manager OnDemand, IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition, FileNet Content Manager, and IBM Content Foundation).
- Note: License fees are applicable if integration or federation is done against content residing in EMC Document or OpenText repositories.
Social content management
IBM Content Foundation is a rich platform for developing social ECM solutions and applications that gives users the ability to access content from anywhere and leverage the business's collective stream of knowledge. The following capabilities are provided in the APIs to enable the repository to track and manage social interaction around managed content. These capabilities are not visible through the IBM Content Navigator user interface at this time.
- Document comments provide users with the ability to add comments to documents managed by IBM Content Foundation. Users can add multiple comments or view the discussion associated with any managed object.
- Social Tagging provides users with the ability to add social tags to documents managed by IBM Content Foundation. Social tags make it easier for users to contribute to the classification and grouping of documents, thereby, improving their ability to discover relevant information. Users can add tags, view the tags associated with any managed object, or find documents using tags.
- Document Download Tracking provides users with the ability to see how many, and which, users are downloading specific documents from the repository. This enables document owners to understand the audience of documents they manage.
- Recommend Documents provide users with the ability to recommend individual documents in the repository and to see the aggregate of multiple recommendations in order understand how the document is rated by its consumers.
- Document Thumbnail services provide users with an option to see thumbnails alongside document properties when viewing folder content and search results, providing more contextual information and allowing for a more efficient and simplified discovery process.
Enterprise manageability
IBM Content Foundation is a true enterprise class ECM platform, which provides capabilities required for enterprise manageability including the easy scalability to meet the demands of the world's largest enterprises. IBM Content Foundation can handle multimillion document storage and retrieval rates on a daily basis. In addition, IBM Content Foundation also provides the capability to optimize deployments for geographically dispersed user communities by, for example, supporting content caching for optimized remote retrieval or locating primary storage in countries requiring local storage for legal reasons.
System platform of choice
- Lower TCO through the integration with existing enterprise infrastructure standards and the support of leading IT platforms. Users get support for a variety of operating systems, relational database management systems (RDBMs), web application servers, directory services, and other enterprise standard environments.
Enterprise-level systems management capabilities and integration with leading systems management tools
- Support of lights-out, 24 x 7 data center manageability and improved enterprise class performance management
- Single Java Platform, Enterprise Edition application for ECM services
- Content Engine, Process Engine, Case Analytics, and the Component Manager are components of a single engine called the Content Platform Engine. A single installation, configuration, and administration effort manages the combined Content Platform Engine, thereby, simplifying installation, configuration, and administration processes.
- Web-based administration user experience
- Administration functions are delivered through a single browser-based web application.
- Content file compression for storage optimization
- New file compression capabilities are available in IBM Content Foundation, which enable you to optimize your storage resource consumption. Compression can be enabled for any FileNet storage area and, therefore, targeted at documents which will benefit from this storage optimization.
Enterprise search
- IBM Content Search Services search optimization
- This feature improves the performance of Content Search Services by leveraging optimized hybrid (combining metadata search and content-based search) queries.
- Live index optimization
- This feature automatically optimizes the text search indices by monitoring deleted item and unused disk space thresholds.
Mobile computing
- IBM Content Navigator supports mobile computing in multiple ways. iOS devices benefit from a native touch-optimized client. Smartphones and tablets are able to use both the Navigator web client and business applications delivered using its rich HTML5 toolkit.
Flexible storage options
- FileNet Content Manager provides support for storing content in relational databases, file systems, and external systems corresponding to a specific type of storage area.
- A database storage area stores document content as Binary Large Objects (BLOBs) in the relational database that has been specified as the object store database.
- A file storage area stores document content in a directory tree in a file system located on a standard local Directly Attached Storage (DAS), fiber Storage Area Network (SAN), or Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) connected, or shared network attached storage (NAS) drive. The file system can be Microsoft Windows™ NTFS mounted via Common Internet File System (CIFS), a UNIX™ file system mounted via Network File System (NFS), or IBM General Parallel File System ( GPFS™ ).
- A fixed storage area stores document content on an external system or device that typically exhibits specific content protection or management features, which require special connector software. A fixed storage area consists of a staging area in FileNet P8, similar to a standard file storage area, and the separate content device it connects to over the network via the fixed content provider software. The content device can be a fixed or protected content device or a federated content system, such as FileNet Image Services.
- Note: IBM does not qualify specific DAS, iSCSI, SAN, or NAS technologies for all-purpose storage that are typically used for databases, binaries, or file storage areas. IBM Content Foundation transparently supports these technologies as long as the storage infrastructure is supported by the host operating system and the network file system (CIFS or NFS) as described in IBM Content Foundation hardware and software requirements.
- Support is provided for various media types, storage locations, and multiple storage vendors.
- Using fixed storage areas and their matching fixed content providers, IBM Content Foundation can store content on the following devices:
- Any storage device supported by FileNet Image Services, including surface-based magnetic storage, optical libraries, IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager and System Storage® Archive Manager (SSAM) enabled devices, NetApp and IBM N series, and SnapLock enabled devices, EMC Centera, Hitachi HCP, and Sun StorageTek devices. This option is typically useful for leveraging an existing Image Services infrastructure. No connector license is required.

Statement of good security practices
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM . The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM . The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM .
More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM , problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.
Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the Electronic Support website at
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent . Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.
