Compatibility:
The xSeries 200 systems contain licensed system programs that
include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System BIOS
(AWARD BIOS modified to IBM specifications) is loaded from a "flash"
EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and
interfaces designed to support the standard features of the server and to
maintain compatibility with many current software programs.
To view detailed information on the Internet about IBM and non-IBM
devices, adapters, software, and network operating systems supported with
xSeries servers, enter:
Customers can contact their IBM representative, IBM Business Partner, the
HelpCenter®, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the
compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries servers. The Sales
Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced
that support these servers.
Limitations
-
The xSeries 200 server supports a maximum of 1.5 GB of system memory by
adding a 512 MB PC133 ECC SDRAM RDIMM in each of the three DIMM slots.
All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access
(DMA). This server supports 128 MB, 256 MB, and 512 MB 133 MHz, 72-bit
ECC SDRAM unbuffered DIMMs. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same
system. Refer to the
Planning Information
section or our compatibility Web page for supported memory options.
-
The open 5.25-inch bay supports removable media devices, such as tape
backup devices. It does not support HDD options.
-
Customers should use the version of ServerGuide that ships with the
system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier
versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.
Refer to the
Software Requirements
section for operating system limitations.
Planning Information
Customer Responsibilities
xSeries 200 Customer Setup:
The xSeries 200 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup
instructions are shipped with systems.
Standard EIDE Configurations:
In xSeries 200 model using the EIDE interface for storage device
attachment, a two-drop cable is used to attach the standard 20.4 GB EIDE
HDD to one of the EIDE connectors. A second EIDE controller provides the
interface for the IDE CD-ROM drive. A two-drop IDE cable connects the
IDE controller to the IDE CD-ROM. Up to two additional EIDE or IDE
devices can be installed (one off each controller).
Other Configuration Alternatives:
A Netfinity® Two-Drop Internal SCSI Cable (36L9636) is optionally
available to support installation of a non-LVD SCSI tape drive in
configurations where the five drop cable is attached to an optional RAID
controller. For configurations requiring an LVD cable, the optionally
available Netfinity Media Bay Conversion Kit (10K2340) can be ordered.
External SCSI support can be obtained by installing an optional SCSI
adapter or RAID controller and using appropriate external SCSI cabling.
Supported Memory Options:
The following memory options are supported:
-
128 MB 133 MHz ECC SDRAM Unbuffered DIMM (33L3081)
-
256 MB 133 MHz ECC SDRAM Unbuffered DIMM (33L3083)
-
512 MB 133 MHz ECC SDRAM Unbuffered DIMM (33L3085)
Rack Installations:
The xSeries 200 can be converted to a rack-mounted unit by
installing a 4Ux24D Tower-to-Rack Kit. The 4 U xSeries 200 can be
installed in a 19-inch industry-standard rack such as:
-
NetBAY42 ER Cabinet
-
NetBAY42 SR Cabinet
-
NetBAY25 SR Cabinet
If using a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards
with a depth of at least 28 inches. Also, adequate space (approximately
two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be
maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet
to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air
flow.
Cable Orders:
The 10/100 Mbps, full-duplex, Ethernet PCI controller, standard with
server, is connected directly to an RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45 connector
provides a 10BaseT or 100Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair
cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server.
To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an
unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends.
For 100 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10
Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.
There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system
power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.
Installability:
The xSeries 200 requires about 20 minutes for installation.
Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system.
Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional
adapters, or features.
Packaging:
One box containing System Unit Carton and Country Kit Carton
-
Keyboard with attached cable
-
Two-button mouse with attached cable
-
System unit power cord
-
xSeries 200 Installation Guide
-
ServerGuide and IBM Director
xSeries 200 system ships as a single package. The country kit carton is
contained inside the top portion of the system unit carton.
Security, Auditability, and Control
Security and auditability features include:
-
Power-on password (secured boot).
-
A mechanical lock allowing the user to lock the system cover to prevent
unauthorized personnel access to internal components of the server.
-
Selectable boot sequence preventing unauthorized installation of software
or removal of data from the diskette drive.
-
Tie-down capability by utilizing a common U bolt attached to the back
frame.
-
Operation without a keyboard and display are supported once the server is
configured with the appropriate network operating system. This minimizes
the risk of unauthorized people tampering with the system software and
configuration.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation
of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls
in application systems and communications facilities.
