If you scale this up to a complete IT solution, this means when running this workload, the LinuxONE Emperor 4 Max 125 would be doing the work of about 2000 cores of the compared x86 servers.

DISCLAIMER: This is an IBM internal study designed to replicate a typical IBM customer workload usage in the marketplace. Results may vary. The core consolidation study targeted comparison of the following IBM LinuxONE and x86 servers: An IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4 Max 125 system consists of three CPC drawers containing 125 configurable processor units (IFLs or zIIPs) and two I/O drawers to support both network and external storage. Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 (2U) with two 2nd Gen Intel™ ® Xeon ® Platinum processors 2.1 GHz, 16 cores per CPU. Both the x86-based and LinuxONE solutions had access to the same storage array. The workloads consisted of a transactional application running on WebSphere Application Server and IBM Db2 simulating core online banking functions. The actual test results were extrapolated to the stated above x86 servers using IDC QPI metrics and IBM sizing methodology using the following assumptions on a typical IT environment of a banking client using x86 servers. The production IT environment has 16 x86 servers running at 50% average utilization. There are 48 x86 servers in the nonproduction IT environments: development (4 environments with 2 servers each, 8 servers total), development test environment (4 servers), system integration test environment (8 servers), performance test environment (16 servers), user acceptance test environment (4 servers), production fix test environment (8 servers). A typical average CPU utilization is 7% across all nonproduction environments. An equivalent LinuxONE Emperor 4 solution requires a single Max 125 server running at 85% average utilization across all IT environments separated using LPAR technology.

DISCLAIMER: Performance result is extrapolated from IBM internal tests running in an IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4 LPAR with 24 dedicated cores, 560 GB memory, and DASD storage the Acme Air microservice benchmark on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (RHOCP) 4.9 using RHEL 8.4 KVM. On 4 RHOCP Compute nodes, 4 Acme Air instances were running in parallel, each driven remotely from JMeter 5.2.1 with 384 parallel users. The KVM guests with RHOCP Compute nodes were configured with 12 vCPUs and 64 GB memory each. The KVM guests with RHOCP Management nodes and RHOCP Infrastructure nodes were configured with 4 vCPUs and 16 GB memory each. Results may vary.

CMC is a cloud-native platform that provides apps that give powerful insights into your Power infrastructure across data centers and geographies. With no additional software or infrastructure setup, you can get single pane of glass views of your inventory, software levels, resource capacity utilization, as well as launch-in-context of your on-premises software, such as IBM PowerVC and IBM PowerHA®. Each new Power E1050 server purchase includes 12 months of CMC service, which can be renewed.

Open source cloud automation and configuration tooling for AIX

The Power E1050 enables you to take advantage of key packages to enable cloud automation, including:

  • chef automation for configuration, deployment, and management. IBM is collaborating with clients in this community to provide useful resources for using chef with AIX systems.
  • yum package management is available with repository access from both ftp and https protocols. rpm is also updated to enable automatic dependency discovery.
  • cloud-init and all dependencies are available in the repository and includes support for licensed AIX users. For more information, see the AIX Toolbox for Open Source Software website.

Overview

z/VM 7.3 will provide IBM clients with a premier hypervisor on their modernization journey to hybrid cloud, hosting enterprise-class virtual servers to exploit the IBM zSystems and LinuxONE advantages in scalability, performance, high availability, and security.

The objective of z/VM 7.3 is to enhance the proof points supporting modernization efforts, specifically those associated with scalability and efficiency. z/VM is designed to enable the deployment of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform clusters and up to thousands of Linux servers on a single IBM zSystems or LinuxONE server.

While cloud computing has become the standard operating model for IT services, an IT infrastructure continues to be the foundation of every IT service. Realizing the benefits of the cloud operation model requires a strong virtualization technology such as z/VM that delivers availability, reliability, security features, and performance.

Virtualization is fundamental to delivering infrastructure as a service (IaaS), the basic building block for a cloud operations model. IBM continues to invest in z/VM technology to provide leading-edge virtualization capabilities. This progression can meet the needs of IT organizations to deliver the foundation for user satisfaction with both types of workloads:

  • Cloud-native workloads based on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and IBM Cloud Paks or other container technologies
  • Noncontainerized workloads, deployed using cloud and traditional operations models, from IBM such as IBM WebSphere, open source such as MongoDB, or software from ISVs

z/VM, together with IBM Cloud Infrastructure Center, which helps to manage the lifecycle of virtual infrastructure, provides the foundation for private cloud on an IBM zSystems and LinuxONE server as part of a hybrid cloud approach.

For both noncontainerized and cloud native workloads, z/VM virtualization technology is designed to enable the deployment of more virtual servers in a single IBM zSystems or LinuxONE server than any other platform through legendary scalability, system management, and performance. z/VM supports the following guest operating systems: Linux, IBM z/OS®, IBM z/VSE®, IBM z/TPF, and z/VM itself, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS as a part of the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. In addition, the z/VM hypervisor helps ensure continuous infrastructure availability by tightly integrating with IBM GDPS® resiliency-focused offerings and Live Guest Relocation support.

With z/VM 7.3, IBM continues to deliver enhancements to its z/VM advanced virtualization technology on IBM zSystems and LinuxONE servers using the z/VM continuous delivery (CD) model. This CD model for new function offers clients timely support for new technology throughout the life of a z/VM product release using a delivery mechanism that is familiar to clients and time tested. The z/VM CD model allows schedule flexibility as IBM partners with the z/VM community in the design, development, and delivery of new functions that are not centered around a specific release date.

  • IBM WebSphere Edge Components: Caching Proxy (all versions)

Support for the WebSphere Application Server family of products continues to be provided.

Clients with IBM HTTP Server for IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5.5 (32-bit) and Web Server Plug-ins for IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5.5 (32-bit) components can migrate to the version 9, 64-bit equivalent components to continue to receive support. Clients with WebSphere Application Server 8.5.5 product entitlement are supported when using the version 9 components with their version 8.5.5 application server deployments. There is no requirement to move the application server deployments to version 9.

Clients with WebSphere Edge Components: Caching Proxy can migrate to alternative solutions for this capability. WebSphere Edge Components: Caching Proxy will continue to ship with the WebSphere Application Server product family, but will not receive support after September 30, 2024.
