IBM Power Private Cloud Solution now offers monthly post-pay billing option for minutes of Metered Capacity consumption

IBM Power Private Cloud with Shared Utility Capacity offers monthly billing of consumed Metered Capacity resources in a Power Enterprise Pool. Minutes of Metered Processor Cores and Metered Memory consumed each billing period are charged to clients by ordering Min/Hour/Day features on the following MTMs:

Overview

The IBM Power Systems Private Cloud Solution with Shared Utility Capacity was initially launched with support to share hardware and software resources across a collection of on-premises Power systems, with prepaid access to additional, fully active compute resources by the minute that were debited as used from Capacity Credits for Power on account.

Now, IBM is offering a new option to deploy a Power Private Cloud with Shared Utility Capacity infrastructure similar to other private cloud offerings, with monthly billing of consumed Metered Capacity resources. This option is additional; it is not replacing the current option for prepaid Capacity Credits.

Clients will now be able to get a Pool ID without having Capacity Credits on account and select an option to receive invoicing on a monthly basis. This enhancement is designed to simplify and streamline the deployment of IBM Power9 and IBM Power10 systems, or a combination of the two, in a Power Private Cloud infrastructure. It eliminates the need to have an initial quantity of prepaid Capacity Credits on account in order to start a Pool. Clients will be able to assign a Pool ID, accept the terms and conditions for billing through IBM or an authorized IBM Business Partner, and proceed to start and utilize a new Power Enterprise Pool.

The IBM Cloud Management Console (CMC) will continue to monitor and show the number of minutes consumed each month for each resource as well as the equivalent Capacity Credits consumed, for consistency with prepaid deployments and to facilitate existing budgeting functions of the Enterprise Pools application.

Metered Capacity resource minutes consumed on Power systems will be billed based on a feature structure for each Product ID. The feature structures are designed to bill a large, aggregate range of minutes consumed, based on the potential monthly use of each Metered Capacity resource. For example, for High-end Processor Activation resource usage, several features are defined to bill:

  • 1 minute Metered Capacity, High-end Processor
  • 1 hour Metered Capacity, High-end Processor
  • 1 day Metered Capacity, High-end Processor
  • 1,000 days Metered Capacity, High-end Processor

Key requirements

  • One or more Power9 or Power10 server with Power Enterprise Pools 2.0 enablement feature EP20 and Base Processor or Memory Activation features configured, as applicable to the machine type/model. Note that a single Power Enterprise Pool can consist of only Power9 servers, only Power10 servers, or it can consist of both Power9 and Power10 servers.
  • One or more eligible operating system license or subscription with at least one core of entitlement included on each system.

IBM Power Private Cloud Solution is enhanced to support selected Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform for Power subscriptions as Shared Utility Capacity software resource

Overview

The IBM Power Private Cloud Solution with Shared Utility Capacity was initially launched with support to share Base processor and memory hardware resources, as well as IBM AIX and IBM i license entitlements, across a collection of similar IBM Power servers in an enterprise.

Now, selected Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.8 (OCP) for Power Premium Subscriptions sold as IBM program products will be eligible to deploy as Base and Metered Capacity resources within a Power Enterprise Pool (2.0).

Key requirements

  • A valid 5639-OCP Premium Subscription or Premium Subscription/Red Hat Support for two or more cores on each Power server, which will run OpenShift Container Platform.
  • To enable OCP Premium Subscription PID features as Shared Utility Resources within a Pool, an initial order of Product ID 5799-OC2 "OpenShift Enablement for Power Private Cloud/Pools 2.0" must be placed, which includes i-listed PRPQ P91343. The following information must be included in the request for PRPQ P91343 approval:
    • Company name
    • Address
    • Contact name and e-mail of primary administrator of OpenShift Container Platform on Power
    • Initial quantity of 2-core Premium Subscription features or Premium Subscription/Red Hat Support features being ordered or to be enabled as Base OCP resources within the pool.
  • An active Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC) connection is required between the HMC and each virtual machine running Red Hat OCP.
  • Hardware Management Console (HMC) 10.1.1010, or later, is required.

IBM delivers hardware enhancements for selected IBM Power technology-based servers

At a glance

Hardware enhancements are available for the IBM Power9 scale-out family of servers, including:

  • A new generation of Enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) U.2 module that provides 800 GB, 1.6 TB, 3.2 TB, or 6.4 TB capacity points

In addition, selected IBM Power servers with Power9 and IBM Power10 technology-based processors now provide support for the IBM i 7.5 feature indicator.

Overview

The Power9 scale-out server family offers Enterprise SSD NVMe U.2 hardware enhancements.

Enterprise SSD PCIe4 NVMe U.2 module

The Enterprise NVMe small form factor (SFF) U.2 15 mm SSD is a Peripheral Component Interconnect® Express (PCIe) generation 4 (Gen4) drive. The SSD employs NVMe and can be used in any U.2 15 mm NVMe slot in the system. NVMe is a high-performance architecture and command protocol that can read and write flash memory. Compared to a serial-attached SCSI (SAS) SSD or a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) SSD, the NVMe SSD provides more read and write input/output operations per second (IOPS) and larger throughput (GB/sec).

This Enterprise SSD is rated at 3 Drive Writes Per Day (DWPD) calculated over a five-year period for 100% (4K bytes or larger) random write workloads. Use for workloads within this rating is fully supported and will maintain high reliability and mean time between failures (MTBF).

The nature of the workload has a great impact on the maximum write capacity. If a high percentage of more sequentially oriented writes is used instead of random writes, the maximum write capacity will be larger. Writes past the SSD's maximum write capacity will continue to work for some period of time, but they will perform much more slowly. Whether the application uses sequential or random reads from the device does not affect the life of the device. A Predictive Failure Analysis message will indicate that it is time to replace the SSD if enabled by the operating system (OS) and system administrator. IBM recommends that you monitor SMART log critical information through the appropriate OS utility to observe drive life remaining information. IBM NVMe SSD failures will be replaced during the standard warranty and maintenance period for SSDs that have not reached the maximum number of write cycles. SSDs that reach this limit may fail to operate according to specifications and must be replaced at the client's expense. The adapter supports boot on Power with Fcode. Data redundancy on a failed SSD may be provided by OS mirroring or software RAID wherever applicable.

This PCIe4 NVMe device can have 64 namespaces per device.

Overview

The IBM Power Private Cloud Solution with Shared Utility Capacity was introduced to offer enhanced multisystem resource sharing and by-the-minute tracking and consumption of compute resources across a collection of systems in an enterprise. It can simplify system management so IT teams can focus on optimizing their business results instead of moving resources around within their data center.

Within a Power Enterprise Pool, consumption of metered capacity is charged only for minutes of each resource that exceed a pool's aggregate base capacity. Minutes of each metered capacity resource consumed are tracked and may be either billed monthly, or may be debited, real-time, against a balance of prepaid capacity credits on account, based upon a published metered capacity rate table that expresses the minutes of a given resource use which will consume a single capacity credit. A lower resource rate consumes a single capacity credit faster, for resources that are more expensive to purchase and use. An increase in a resource rate improves the cost of using it because subsequent usage of the resource will consume a single, purchased capacity credit more slowly.

When clients select the monthly billing option, any minutes of Metered Capacity resource consumed each month will be invoiced at the published rate of consumption for each resource through the following products designed to itemize billing:

  • IBM AIX® Metered Capacity (5765-AXM): Medium-tier and small-tier features; rate includes AIX and other installed, eligible products1, such as IBM PowerVM®, IBM PowerVC, and IBM Cloud® Management Console for Power (CMC).
  • IBM i Metered Capacity (5770-SSM): P10, P20, and P30 tier features; rate includes IBM i and other installed, eligible products1, such as PowerVM, PowerVC, and CMC.
  • SUSE Linux® Enterprise Server (SLES) Metered Capacity (5639-SLM): Medium-tier and small-tier features; rate includes SLES, SLES for SAP, and other installed, eligible products1, such as PowerVM, PowerVC, and CMC.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Metered Capacity (5639-RSM): Medium-tier and small-tier features; rate includes RHEL, RHEL for SAP for Power, and other installed, eligible products1, such as PowerVM, PowerVC, and CMC.
  • OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) Metered Capacity (5639-OSM): Medium-tier and small-tier features; rate includes OCP and other installed, eligible products1, such as PowerVM, PowerVC, and CMC.

The CMC will continue to monitor and show the number of minutes consumed each month for each resource as well as the equivalent consumption of Capacity Credits consumed to help ensure consistency with prepaid deployments and to facilitate existing budgeting functions of the Enterprise Pools application.

IBM i 7.5 and IBM i Portfolio give strong foundation for continuing innovation

Overview

IBM i 7.5 contains enhancements to many base operating system components and to the Licensed Program Products in the IBM i Portfolio. Some of the new capabilities are described here.

Base operating system

Security

  • A new Password Encryption Scheme helps users achieve even greater levels of security, implemented by setting the Password Level (QPWDLVL) to 4.
  • By using a new API, Check Password Meets Password Rules (QSYCHKPR), users or password management tools can predetermine if a value would meet the configured password rules set by the company.
  • The Service Tools CL commands have been enhanced. The SST user attribute "Password expiration interval" can now be set using the Create Service Tools User ID (CRTSSTUSR) and Change Service Tools User ID (CHGSSTUSR) commands. Many other SST security attributes can now be set using the Change SST Security Attributes (CHGSSTSECA) command. A new SST security attribute was added to indicate whether password exit programs can be added or removed from the QIBM_QSY_VLD_PASSWRD and QIBM_QSY_CHK_PASSWRD exit points. This attribute can be set in SST or by using the CHGSSTSECA command.
  • Digital Certificate Manager (DCM) has multiple enhancements to improve the user experience and provide additional functions to the base security components.

Compression

  • The ZLIB algorithm is allowed on selected commands to provide an additional option for data compression to produce a smaller result and to improve performance when running on an IBM Power10 processor.

Save and Restore

  • The new default on the ASYNCBRING parameter on Save commands improves performance for saving IFS data.
  • RSTUSRPRF *ALL no longer requires a dedicated system.
  • Restore operations have an updated message that includes the size of data that has been completed to allow better estimation of the time remaining to finish the restore.

Networking

  • SNMP attributes can be configured to allow only SNMPv3 in some environments and to restrict information being returned by SNMPv3 to provide a higher level of security.
  • TCP Selective Acknowledgment (SACK) support on IBM i streamlines the retransmission of data when there is packet loss in the network.
  • The password policy capabilities of IBM Tivoli® Directory Server for i can be extended to enforce rules for advanced password syntax checking in addition to the standard default rules.
  • IBM i DNS upgrades to a newer BIND release.
  • The FTP client can be configured to allow a FTP user to accept a server certificate that is not signed by a trusted certificate authority. The FTP server logon exit point allows the IPV4 address to be specified for IPV4 passive data connection reply.
  • SMTP allows users to configure a different retention time for successfully and unsuccessfully sent emails, configure a different sender address, and allow auto-forward emails.

Application development

  • With IBM i 7.5, some significant changes are made to the Integrated Web Services Rest API engine, including increasing the number of parameters to 248 and updating capabilities of the IWS logging to include Access Client Solutions logging capabilities.
  • To better serve client-based development tools, the create and update commands for program and service program objects can provide command completion information in an events file. That information can be interrogated to provide command completion status.
  • To support many new markets for IBM i, the range of CCSIDs has been increased.
  • The Call (CALL) and Call Bound Procedure (CALLPRC) commands now allow expressions to be passed as parameters and allow you to specify type and length for each parameter.
  • New ILE C/C++ built-in functions for atomic memory access are added in this release. In a program with multiple threads, you can use these functions to atomically and safely modify data in one thread without interference from another thread.

System administration

  • Clients can now change the scope of 2-digit year date ranges. The QIBM_QBASEYEAR environment variable enables clients to shift the base year from 1940 to 1970.
  • IBM i 7.5 supports a maximum of 48 processors per partition in SMT8 mode and therefore a maximum of 384 threads on servers with Power10 or IBM Power9 technology.
  • Service Tools can now display detailed information about individual NVMe devices on the system.
  • New enhancements have been added to the Job Scheduler commands and display.
  • Several hardware and software enhancements have been made in IBM i 7.5 Performance Tools.
  • IBM Navigator for i offers additional tasks and features to provide administrators with more information than previous versions.
  • Several hardware and software enhancements have been added to the Integrated File System (IFS), including a new layer of security for IBM i NetServer, new exit points, and more resilient file sharing options.
  • It takes less time to perform Cluster Resource Group (CRG) switchover for selected configurations.
  • System administrators can use Service Tools to display and make better informed decisions about NVMe devices with more detailed information about the individual devices.
  • To set the console configuration and debug console problems on a server that is not managed by a Hardware Management Console (HMC) or other management interface, the operator panel must be used. The number of operator panel functions to get to the console service functions has been reduced.

Db2® for i

  • Db2 for i provides additional functions for HTTP requests to publish or consume web services.
  • Db2 for i is providing more advanced, easy-to-use tooling for the database engineer (DBE).
  • IBM i Services, the strategic method for gaining access to IBM i objects, system information, and much more is expanding to provide useful SQL-based alternatives to IBM i commands and APIs.
  • Db2 for i increases the number of working examples and tools in the SYSTOOLS schema.

Open Source for IBM i

  • In response to community requests, IBM is restating the various options available for application serving on IBM i. Many of these have support available from IBM Technical Support Services.

LPPs

  • In IBM Rational® Development Studio, RPG IV is responding to requirements from the development community and offering some new message-handling operations.
  • The IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS) interface is updated and enhanced with three major updates to the core ACS product: Group Views, Customize the GUI content, and a Run SQL Scripts tab capability.
  • IBM PowerHA® SystemMirror® for i 7.5 brings a new set of enhancements centered around simplification, reporting, and performance.
  • The Backup, Recovery, and Media Services (BRMS) for i product has numerous enhancements across many areas of the product, adding or updating command defaults and providing new capabilities through SQL Services and new APIs.
  • IBM Db2 Mirror for i at 7.5 fulfills the commitment of running in a mixed OS release environment.
  • IBM Content Manager OnDemand for i (CMOD) has improved programmer productivity by adding and enhancing capabilities such as commands, creation of .pdf files, and better integration with other IBM i tools.

An increasing number of enterprises run within a mixed hybrid environment of on-premises and off-premises. Now, PowerSC 2.1 is available with a new subscription pricing option that can help you take advantage of hybrid cloud use cases while providing more flexibility for license mobility at a lower cost. This subscription option provides all the same technical capabilities as the existing one-time license charge version.

The PowerSC subscription is available in one-year, two-year, three-year, four-year, and five-year terms. PowerSC subscriptions can be ordered from IBM Advanced Administration System (AAS) ordering systems. Perpetual one-time charge license options remain unchanged through AAS.

IBM i 7.4 Technology Refresh 6 (TR6) contains enhancements to many base operating system components and to the Licensed Program Products in the IBM i Portfolio. Some of the new capabilities are described here.

Base operating system

Security

  • Digital Certificate Manager (DCM) has multiple enhancements to improve the user experience and provide additional functions to the base security components.

Compression

  • The ZLIB algorithm is allowed on selected commands to provide an additional option for data compression to produce a smaller result and to improve performance when running on an IBM Power10 processor.

Application development

  • With IBM i 7.4 TR6, some significant changes are made to the Integrated Web Services Rest API engine, including increasing the number of parameters to 248 and updating capabilities of the IWS logging to include Access logging capabilities.
  • To support many new markets for IBM i, the range of CCSIDs has been increased.

System administration

  • IBM Navigator for i offers additional tasks and features to provide administrators with more information than previous versions.
  • It takes less time to perform Cluster Resource Group (CRG) switchover for selected configurations.

I/O and virtualization

  • Enterprise PCIe4 NVMe disk in U.2 form factor.
  • IBM i 7.4 now exploits VIOS NPIV multiple queues for virtual Fibre Channel adapters to improve I/O throughput, reduce latency, and achieve more I/O requests per second.

Db2 for i

  • Db2 for i provides additional functions for HTTP requests to publish or consume web services.
  • Db2 for i is providing more advanced and easy-to-use tooling for the database engineer (DBE).
  • IBM i Services, the strategic method for gaining access to IBM i objects, system information, and much more, is expanding to provide useful SQL-based alternatives to IBM i commands and APIs.
  • Db2 for i increases the number of working examples and tools in the SYSTOOLS schema.

Open Source for IBM i

  • In response to community requests, IBM is making various options available for application serving with IBM i. Many of these have support available from IBM Technical Support Services.

LPPs

  • In Rational Development Studio, RPG IV is responding to requirements from the development community and offering some new message-handling operations.
  • The IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS) interface is updated and enhanced with three major updates to the core ACS product: Group Views, Customize the GUI content, and a Run SQL Scripts tab capability.
  • IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for i brings a new set of enhancements centered around simplification, reporting, and performance.
  • IBM Backup, Recovery, and Media Services for i (BRMS) is enhanced to improve both the user experience and usability.

Overview

Inspector Wearable

Inspector Wearable 1.1.0 is a native mobile app that enables customers to perform hands-free AI-enabled visual inspections running on RealWear HMT and Navigator 500 headsets. This app uses computer vision AI models trained on Model Builder or Maximo Visual Inspection, to rapidly identify defects and issues, capturing images through a head-mounted display. Inspector Wearable performs hands-free inspections with simple voice commands and head gestures that RealWear devices provide, even in high-noise environments.

New features delivered in 1.1.0:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) model support for Maximo Visual Inspection, part of IBM Maximo Application Suite
  • Offline support
  • Configurable MQTT topic structure
  • Support for templating the output of the MQTT threshold message

Inspector Portable

Inspector Portable 1.1.0 is a native iOS or iPadOS mobile app that is designed to make artificial intelligence more accessible by simplifying the process of deploying, running, and managing Core ML computer vision models. By leveraging the capabilities of the iPhone or iPad, this app can enable highly efficient and accurate handheld visual inspection for users. Additionally, this app also leverages the concept of inspection procedures that enables users to conduct multiple inspections as a progression of steps.

New features delivered in 1.1.0 include:

  • Capability to create inspection procedures directly within inspector portable
  • Sideloading of models for stand-alone inspections
  • Additional configurability of camera option at the individual step level of inspection procedure

Model Builder

Model Builder 1.0 is an AI training platform that can use the capabilities of IBM Cloud and its GPUs to train computer vision models for compatible mobile apps. Inspection Workbench iPadOS app is used as the exclusive user interface for labeling and training. Specifically, Model Builder trains computer vision models that can then be deployed for use on the Inspector Portable and Inspector Wearable apps. Customers that require additional flexibility and scale can export images and labels from Model Builder for import into Maximo Visual Inspection.

Inspection Workbench

Inspection Workbench 1.1 is a native iPadOS mobile app that enables users to label images on an iPhone or iPad for training Core ML and TensorFlow Lite computer vision models that run on IBM companion apps. After models are trained on the server, Inspection Workbench can deploy those models in near real-time to companion apps and create or update relevant inspections, all from one native iPadOS experience.

Inspection Suite Fast Start

This remotely delivered service supports customers in the installation, setup, configuration, and basic training of Inspection Suite products through qualified specialists from IBM.

  • Either 5372-IS5 or 5313-HPO has generated features for the software license being ordered.
