DESCRIPTION
USER PRODUCTIVITY
The PS/2 Communications Cartridge I is a convenient way for students
and professionals who may wish to use their laptop/notebook system to
connect to hosts and LANs, as well as maintaining the flexibility of
using the laptop/notebook system in mobile environments. Timely
electronic capture of data at its source, and immediate access to
information in the work place, improves users' productivity, and adds
quality and value to the products and services they provide.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The PS/2 Communications Cartridge I will protect the customer's
investment in a laptop/notebook system by improving the
communications capabilities of the system. The PS/2 Communications
Cartridge I will also enhance the buying decisions for
laptop/notebook systems because of the importance of easily, quickly,
accurately, and inexpensively exchanging portable files with host and
network files.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The PS/2 Communications Cartridge I enhances the customer's business
solutions by allowing the daily, fast, accurate exchange of data
between employees and hosts and/or LANs. Improved flexibility to use
the portable in home/office as well as mobile environments.
SYSTEM MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL
The PS/2 Communications Cartridge I will allow effective system
management and control through the simple, fast backup/restore access
to backup devices residing on host and LAN facilities.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The PS/2 Communications Cartridge I fulfills the Statement of
Direction stated in Product Announcement 191-030, dated
March 26, 1991, for the IBM PS/2 Model L40 SX. Connectivity support
is provided by supporting one half-size card slot for IBM Token-Ring,
5250, or 3270 connectivity.

The Hardware Maintenance Library publications are for service
personnel and detail many aspects of maintaining the machine. The
publications include a parts catalog, the reference diskette
containing advanced diagnostics, and instructions for identifying the
failing field replaceable unit.
The reference publications are for programmers, engineers and others
who want to understand the PS/2 Communications Cartridge I unit in
greater detail. The publications include functional specifications,
hardware specifications and pinout for connectors.

PLANNING INFORMATION
CABLE ORDERS: All cables are included with the IBM PS/2
Communications Cartridge I.
INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user
attaches the cable. Power is then turned on. After the computer has
successfully completed its initial self-tests, the user inserts the
PS/2 Communication Cartridge I Reference Diskette. A utility program
on the Reference Diskette is then run to establish the Communications
Cartridge environment. Installation time should take approximately
10 minutes.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION: Operating instructions and diagnostic
procedures which are included with the supported adapters (IBM
Token-Ring, 3270 and 5250), assist the customer in isolating any
defective machine element.
PACKAGING: Each PS/2 Communications Cartridge I ships from the plant
in a single carton.
