Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.8 for Power

OpenShift 4.8 is the latest version of the industry's leading enterprise Kubernetes platform. It provides a powerful foundation to develop and connect diverse workloads across the hybrid cloud and helps organizations accelerate the creation of new cloud-native applications by incrementally modernizing existing environments and IT investments. As organizations grow application landscapes to meet evolving needs, Kubernetes-powered cloud platforms need to not only span all open hybrid cloud infrastructure footprints, but also the variety of workloads and applications running on this foundation.

OpenShift 4.8 provides organizations with an enterprise-grade container orchestration platform concurrent with x86 platform support. OpenShift 4.8 is powered by Kubernetes operators and Red Hat's commitment to full-stack security, developing, and scaling. Key features of OpenShift 4.8 include:

  • Kubernetes 1.21
  • Cluster log forwarding for aggregation of logs from multiple clusters
  • Data store (ETCD) encryption
  • Reduced footprint of a 3-node cluster

Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) subscriptions are offered in two core increments that are designed to run in a virtual guest. All Red Hat OCP instances are CoreOS based. Clients with active Red Hat OCP for Power subscriptions are automatically entitled to the newer version of Red Hat OCP.

Several additional Red Hat products are included with an OCP subscription and have recently been enabled for Power. These include:

  • Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces. Built on the open Eclipse Che project, CodeReady Workspaces uses Kubernetes and containers to provide any member of your development or IT team with a consistent, secure, and preconfigured development environment.
  • OpenShift Do (odo) . odo is a fast, iterative command- line interface (CLI) for developers who write, build, and deploy applications on OpenShift. It has a simple, extensible syntax that includes on-the-fly interactive help to construct the appropriate options for your commands. odo consolidates a series of separate steps to deploy your apps and make modifications.
  • OpenShift Service Mesh. Applications are changing from monoliths into collections of small, independent, and loosely coupled services often referred to as cloud-native applications. These services are organized in a microservices architecture. Managing the communication between these services and maintaining security can be made easier by using a service mesh to route requests from one service to the next and optimize how all the services work together. OpenShift Service Mesh provides a uniform way to connect, manage, and observe microservices-based applications.
  • OpenShift Pipelines. OpenShift Pipelines is a cloud- native, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) solution based on Kubernetes resources. It uses Tekton building blocks to automate deployments across multiple platforms by abstracting away the underlying implementation details. Tekton introduces a number of standard Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) for defining CI/CD pipelines that are portable across Kubernetes distributions.
  • OpenShift Serverless. Serverless is a deployment model that allows building and running of applications without requiring deep insight into the underlying infrastructure. Developers can focus on writing code and determining where it needs to run without worrying about the infrastructure. An event-driven serverless deployment makes it possible to run code and provision infrastructure only when necessary, which allows the application to be idle when it isn't needed. A serverless application will automatically scale up based on event triggers in response to incoming demand and is then able to scale to zero after use.

Program delivery

When you order Red Hat OCP for Power from IBM, you will receive a "Product Information Card" document from IBM Software Fulfillment. See this document for information on downloading the product from Red Hat and registering your subscription. This information is also available through the Entitled Systems Support (ESS) website.

Note : The product information card ships separately from the Power server and should not be discarded or destroyed.

Support requirements

Red Hat OCP subscriptions are offered with support from either Red Hat or IBM. You should select one of the Red Hat combined subscription and support features that IBM offers or select an L3-only subscription combined with IBM Cloud Support Line for OpenShift (5771-OCP, 5773-OCP, or 5775-OCP).

Organizations with Power servers can leverage OCP for Power to build and deploy data and cognitive applications on a server architecture that is purpose-built to deliver services more efficiently and economically. This enables IT to provide self-service and automated delivery for their highly performing data and cognitive services, including open source databases and GPU-accelerated applications.

OCP for Power can be implemented alongside an existing Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform environment. OCP for Power can co-exist with OpenShift Container Platform as two independent container clusters managed independently, but with that same familiar Red Hat interface and toolset.

Clients can quickly get operational on OCP for Power by using a preconfigured selection of popular applications and databases in ready-to-run Red Hat Certified containers for Power. The platform is extensible, so clients can also bring their own containerized workloads to the platform. OCP for Power comes with the following Red Hat Certified containers for Power:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • MySQL
  • PostgreSQL
  • MariaDB
  • MongoDB
  • Node.js
  • Ruby
  • PHP
  • Perl
  • Apache httpd
  • Nginx
  • OpenJDK

The introduction of OCP for Power unites two critical elements of most enterprise data centers into a single modern platform: IBM Power servers and Red Hat Enterprise Linux with OpenShift Container Platform. Together, they deliver a highly secure, reliable, and manageable hardware and software stack that organizations of all sizes need to compete and succeed.

Red Hat OCP for Power expands the choices of private cloud platforms available for Power Systems servers, including the IBM Cloud Private and others.

OCP for Power supports servers built with the POWER8 or POWER9 technology-based processor architecture

Software requirements

The purchase of a separate Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) subscription is required when KVM based virtualization is used. In this scenario RHEL is used for the host operating system. All OCP instances are CoreOS based.
