IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.1

IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.1 is an enterprise-ready, IT-converged infrastructure solution that is optimised for IBM Cloud Pak offerings.

This solution supports both Intel and IBM Power architectures with workloads that run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on Intel or Power operating systems, or on an IBM AIX (Power) operating system.

IBM Cloud Pak System has updated its Intel hardware for additional storage and faster workload processors.

Extended licensing has been added to support virtual processor core (VPC) measurement for IBM Cloud Paks.

IBM Cloud Pak System supports IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions.

IBM Edge Computing is supported on IBM Cloud Pak System as a pattern to centrally and securely manage edge-based workloads across any number of edge devices.

IBM Cloud Pak System W3500 and W3550 2.3.0

IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.0 is an enterprise-ready, turnkey, IT-converged infrastructure solution that is optimised for IBM Cloud Paks offerings. This solution supports both Intel architecture and IBM Power Architecture with workloads that run on either Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on Intel or Power operating systems, or on IBM AIX (POWER) operating system.

IBM PureApplication System W3550 Enhanced Storage Expansion options

IBM PureApplication System W3550 Enhanced Storage Expansion options enable IBM PureApplication Platform W3550 users to expand available storage for their PureApplication Platform workloads. Each flash module in the PureApplication System W3550 Enhanced Storage Expansion enclosure includes 18 TB of solid state drive for a total of 180 TB of usable storage. Up to three PureApplication System W3550 Enhanced Storage Expansion enclosures can be attached to a PureApplication Platform W3550 to expand storage up to 540 TB.

PureApplication System W3550 Enhanced Storage Expansion options are installed by IBM.

The IBM PureApplication Platform and IBM PureApplication System firmware 2.2.5 enable the dramatic time reduction for central IT with enhancements to the following key features:

  • Extension of virtual manager cloud group with usage of rack-based, system high-availability, spare compute nodes
  • Support for AIX 7.2 on W3700, W2700, and W1700 appliances
  • Support for Microsoft Windows 2016, as a supported guest operating system for deployed workloads
  • Support for pLinux on Power for the IBM Cloud Private pattern

This release is available to all new and existing clients of PureApplication System W1500, W1700, W2500, W2700, and W3700 appliances and PureApplication Platform W3500 and W3550 appliances with current subscription and support.

IBM Bluemix Local System delivers a robust and efficient infrastructure to manage complex workloads and the tasks and processes that are invoked by the workloads. The following workloads are supported:

  • Cloud-native workloads that run on Bluemix Local
  • Cloud-enabled application workloads that run on PureApplication Software:
    • Integrated middleware, such as IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM DB2, IBM Business Process Management, and hypervisor images.
    • Application-centric workloads that are created by using pattern types, such as web application patterns, database application patterns, and topology patterns.
    • Open pattern automations (open patterns), which are built with Heat, that can be used to automate the provisioning, management, and monitoring of your open pattern workloads

PureApplication Software can be purchased separately or as part of a PureApplication Software Suite, a bundle that includes WebSphere Application Server and DB2.

Each system provides the following capabilities:

  • Scalable infrastructure, which includes:
    • Hardware that is optimised by workloads
    • Virtualized storage
    • Networking designed to be efficient
  • Integrated delivery. Each model is
    • Factory-assembled and ready for installation
    • Tuned for maximum efficiency of data, storage, workload execution, and retrievability
  • Single application to administer and manage application deployment

Many organizations find that running cloud-native applications on- premise in a local private cloud platform is beneficial for a number of reasons. Running cloud-native applications in a local private cloud provides ready access to on-premises data and services. This minimizes latency and improves performance while allowing clients to keep their data on-premises for regulatory, security, and privacy reasons. The Bluemix Local System provides management, security, and high availability for specific application environment.

At the same time, clients who need to maximise their existing enterprise applications can move these workloads to cloud environments to optimize their investment and help fund new innovation. Workloads, such as business process management, business intelligence, application servers, web portal, and web commerce. are complex to deploy and manage. Many clients need to automate as much of the application lifecycle as possible. Running cloud-enabled applications on-premises in a local private cloud provides the management, control, and resiliency that many organizations require for these mission- critical applications.

Open patterns are patterns built with open technology:

  • OpenStack Heat orchestration
  • Open source automation scripting, which include:
    • Salt
    • Ansible
    • Chef
    • Puppet
    • Operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu)
    • KVM hypervisor

PureStart Services for PureApplication is available for Bluemix Local System W3500 and W3550 models. PureStart Services provides deployment services and support for PureApplication Systems to assist the integration of your systems into your data centre and the creation of a tailored, initial deployment plan.

IBM Bluemix Local System allows clients to run cloud-native services, cloud-enabled applications, and open pattern automations concurrently on their on-premise system.

Bluemix Local System is the evolution of the IBM PureApplication System Intel-based offerings. Expanded system capabilities provide:

  • Cloud-native workloads that run on Bluemix Local
  • Cloud-enabled, middleware workloads that run on PureApplication Software
  • Open pattern automation (open patterns) that are built with Heat to automate provisioning, managing, and monitoring open pattern workloads

The BlueMix Local System is available as two different configurations, each with a full range of models:

  • Bluemix Local System W3500 models: Ideally suited to CPU intensive workloads and is optimised for price performance by extending the capabilities of the PureApplication System W2500 and W1500 appliances.
  • Bluemix Local System W3550 models: High-performance system design that is targeted for workloads that require high IOPS and low latency provided by solid state storage and fibre channel connectivity.

Options for storage expansion for all Bluemix Local System models are available to deliver additional storage for Bluemix Local Systems:

  • One to three W3500 Bluemix Local System Storage Expansions can be added to a W3500 system rack to provide up to 72 TB of additional storage. An additional 17 W3500 storage expansion options can be installed into an adjacent rack to provide up to 480 TB if additional storage. Clients must supply the additional rack and power distribution units with capacity to power the Bluemix Local System Storage Expansion options.
  • One to three W3550 Bluemix Local System Storage Expansions can be added to a 3550 Bluemix Local System to provide up to 150 TB of additional storage.

IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.1

IBM Cloud Pak System is optimised and designed as the preferred, on-premises deployment target for IBM Cloud Pak offerings. Delivered as a private cloud in a box, the solution stack includes enterprise- grade hardware and software management capabilities designed to achieve fast time to value and simplicity in a preintegrated cloud platform.

In addition to support for both Intel and Power architectures, IBM Cloud Pak System includes VMware and supports Kubernetes with optimised automation for installation, configuration, operation, management, and monitoring. IBM Cloud Pak System delivers hybrid cloud capabilities from the enterprise out to any cloud to enable, modernize, optimize, and extend workloads.

Key features and enhancements to IBM Cloud Pak System for this release include:

  • 50% increase for in-rack base storage capacity of IBM Cloud Pak System W3550
  • Up to 10% improvement for inter-process communication due to new processors in IBM Cloud Pak System W3500 and W3550, improving workload performance (1)
  • Support for virtual processor core licensing to align with IBM Cloud Pak usage on any IBM Cloud Pak System
  • Support for virtual machine mobility with IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions for client workloads on any IBM Cloud Pak System
  • Support for IBM Edge Computing as a pattern for the central and secure management of edge-based workloads across any number of edge devices
  • Ongoing improvements to existing features and functions for accuracy, reliability, resiliency, and currency:

For metering usage of PureApplication Software or Software Suite on-premise, you can utilize PureApplication Service by purchasing a PureApplication Service subscription. This capability can be used with PureApplication Platform W3500 or W3550 appliances for a complete on-premise solution.

The following capabilities are provided:

  • Ability to quickly deploy and manage lifecycle of enterprise workloads in dedicated or isolated cloud environments.
  • Capability for hybrid cloud monitoring in conjunction with PureApplication System, PureApplication Platform, or PureApplication Software.

PureApplication Service includes metering for PureApplication Software or PureApplication Software Suite on-premise usage.

Bluemix Local System W3500 and W3550

PureStart Services for PureApplication available for Bluemix Local System W3500 and W3550 models

PureStart Services for PureApplication (PureStart Services) delivers deployment services and support. This service includes the assignment of a technical account manager (TAM) for 90 days to assist integration of the PureApplication Systems into the clients' data centre. In addition, an IBM consultant will assist with creating an initial deployment plan that is tailored to your specific business objectives and workloads.

PureStart Services include a combination of on-site and remote support to assist clients to:

  • Configure PureApplication Systems for initial development use.
  • Install required software updates.
  • Identify key roles and responsibilities.
  • Deliver education and enablement of PureApplication systems basics and operations.
  • Determine appropriate backup and restore scenarios to establish support procedures.
  • Share industry best practices.
  • Provide a central point of contact for remote assistance.

PureStart Services assist clients to:

  • Define high-level project plan to address objectives, scope, milestones, expectations, and business value.
  • Assist in selecting a project (if not previously confirmed).
  • Review each client solution design or creating a basic solution design.
  • Estimate project cost.
  • Provide an overview of pattern development and deployment.
