IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.2 adds Safeguarded Copy to provide secure, immutable snapshots to help protect from cyberattacks.

IBM Storage offers IBM Copy Manager for IBM Spectrum Virtualize software to coincide with this release. IBM Copy Manager for IBM Spectrum Virtualize software is a copy management software package that is designed to deliver copy services and data management capabilities across hybrid cloud storage environments.

IBM Copy Manager for IBM Spectrum Virtualize software offering bundles the following existing software products:

  • IBM Copy Services Manager 6.3.0.1, or later versions
  • IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 8.1.12, or later versions

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.0 adds support for three- site replication for HyperSwap, DRAID 1 on IBM FlashSystems 7200 and 9200, expansion of mirrored vDisks, support for additional storage- class memory (SCM)on some platforms, and updates to Data Reduction Pools (DRP).

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software 8.3.0:

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.3.0 delivers support for the new IBM Storwize V5100 models and adds multitenancy and performance enhancements to all the current models of IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC), IBM FlashSystem V9000, IBM FlashSystem 9100, IBM Storwize V7000, and IBM Storwize 5000.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software 8.2.1:

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2.1 converges all the current models of SVC, FlashSystem V9000, FlashSystem 9100, Storwize V7000 and Storwize V5000 on a common code level, and adds the following functions and improvements

  • NVMe over Fibre Channel support on 16 Gb Fibre Channel adapters
  • Full IP-based quorum
  • 64K host mappings
  • IBM Spectrum Insights call home transport protocol
  • Single copy vdisk expand with format
  • iSER support for host attachment with 25 GbE adapters (IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Model SV1 and IBM Storwize V9000 Model AC3)
  • Clustering support over Ethernet using remote direct memory access (RDMA)

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2 adds support for the new IBM FlashSystem 9100 systems and clustering with IBM Storwize 7000.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Enhanced High Availability Cluster software enables you to utilize IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Model SV1 nodes to extend the capabilities of your IBM FlashSystem 9100 series system. This solution adds stretched cluster capabilities to the environment,and is expandable to the full SVC capabilities by licensing the standard SVC software at a later date as the enterprise grows.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.2 delivers additional features and updates to the IBM SpectrumVirtualize family of products, including IBM FlashSystem 5000, 7000, and 9000 models, and IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC).

The following updates are available in version 8.4.2:

  • Safeguarded Copy provides secure, immutable snapshots to protect and recover from cyber attacks
  • Number of host volumes has increased to 15,864 on FlashSystem 7000, FlashSystem 9000, and SVC
  • Nondisruptive volume migration between systems allows migration of volumes from one IBM Spectrum Virtualize system to another for load balancing or upgrading hardware, without losing host access or requiring any application down time during the migration

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.0 delivers additional features and updates to the IBM Spectrum Virtualize family of products, including IBM FlashSystem 5000, 7000, and 9000 models, and IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC).

The following updates are available in version 8.4:

  • Three-site mirroring with HyperSwap support provides improved availability for data in three-site implementations. This expands on the disaster recovery capabilities inherent in this topology.
  • Three-site mirroring using Metro Mirror was previously supported only in limited installations. With 8.4, this implementation is generally available.
  • DRAID 1 support provides the ability to extend distributed RAID advantages to smaller pools of drives. This improves performance over traditional RAID 1 implementations, allowing users to make better use of flash technology.
  • Expansion of mirrored vDisks allows the vDisk capacity to be expanded or reduced on-line, without requiring an offline format and sync. This improves the availability of the volume for use because the new capacity is available immediately.
  • Up to twelve SCM devices per enclosure are supported in this release. Previously, the limit for all SCM drives was four per enclosure. With 8.4, FlashSystem 5100, 7000, and 9000 systems can support up to twelve Optane drives per enclosure. Simultaneously with this release, up to twelve zSSD drives can be supported in version 8.3.1 and later.
  • DRP improvements include redirect-on-write support for FlashCopy relationships, reduced failover times, improved availability of Compresstimator data, and improved reliability and availability of data in DRP pools through reconstruct read.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize version 8.3.1 delivers additional functionality for IBM FlashSystem, IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC), IBM Storwize, and IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud offerings, including:

  • DRAID set expansion
  • Three-site replication
  • Easy Tier support for storage-class memory drives

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.3.0 adds the following benefits:

  • Support for new NVMe-based Storwize V5100 models delivering improved performance and lower latency
  • Multitenancy through object-based access control allocates storage resources to several independent tenants with the assurance that one tenant cannot access resources associated with another tenant
  • Data reduction pool performance improvements

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2.1 adds the following benefits:

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.2:

Whether they are caused by human error, system glitches, or malicious criminal acts, data breaches are among the gravest and most expensive threats to businesses today. In the past, most organizations have developed and implemented high availability and disaster recovery solutions to protect their data, but these measures are not enough for protection against today's cyberattacks. Organizations affected by a breach also run the risk of having their normal business operations disrupted, as well as, losing valuable data, customers, and their reputation within their industry.

It is imperative that IBM is not only protecting your business from the traditional failures that we have grown accustomed to, but is also prepared for any sort of cyberattack and can help you build resiliency and quick recovery into your operations. Cyber resilience aims at the ability of an organization to continue to operate with the least amount of disruption despite cyberattacks and outages. Cyber resilience expands the scope of protection, covering both cybersecurity and business continuity. A significant part of cyber resilience is the ability to recover from a logical data corruption event. With the constant threat of data breaches driving increased interest in providing secure authentication across hybrid cloud environments, IBM Spectrum Virtualize offers the powerful data security functionality of IBM Safeguarded Copy.

The Safeguarded Copy solution available with IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.2 software is the latest protection mechanism for data on IBM FlashSystem and SVC storage systems. Safeguarded Copy, similar to the IBM DS8000 Safeguarded Copy solution, helps secure data to prevent it from being compromised, either accidentally or deliberately, and allows for recovery from protected backups in the event of a cyberattack. It provides secure, point-in-time copies or snapshots of active production data that cannot be altered or deleted (immutable copies), and that can later be used for identification, repair, or replacement of data that has been compromised by either a cyber or internal attack or corrupted by system failures or human error. The safeguarded backups or copies of data are protected with additional security provided through unique user roles with dual management control (separation of duties). The Safeguarded Copy solution for IBM FlashSystem family and SVC storage systems integrates with IBM Copy Services Manager software, starting with Copy Services Manager 6.3.0.1, leveraging its automated, built-in copy and retention scheduling, testing, and ease of recovery capabilities. IBM Copy Services Manager also coordinates Safeguarded Copy function across multiple systems.

As an added layer of protection, Safeguarded Copy is integrated with IBM QRadar Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) that helps security teams accurately detect and prioritize threats across the enterprise. Using analytics and AI, IBM QRadar SIEM analyzes log events and network flow data to detect suspicious events in real time and aggregates related events into prioritized alerts. IBM QRadar SIEM and IBM Spectrum Virtualize Safeguarded Copy combine the proactive threat monitoring and detection capabilities of IBM QRadar and the data protection and recovery functionalities of IBM Spectrum Virtualize Safeguarded Copy to strengthen the cyber resilience of your hybrid cloud storage environment.

IBM Copy Manager for IBM Spectrum Virtualize is an optional software package offering available for IBM FlashSystem and SVC storage families. It is designed to deliver copy services, data management, and protection capabilities across hybrid cloud storage environment through IBM Copy Services Manager 6.3.0.1, or later, and IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 8.1.12, or later.

IBM Copy Services Manager is a replication management solution that delivers central control of your replication environment while helping to simplify and automate complex replication tasks. With Copy Services Manager, you can coordinate copy services on a variety of IBM Storage systems, including DS8000, SVC, Storwize V7000, and XIV. Starting with version 6.3.0.1, Copy Services Manager includes support for Safeguarded Copy on the IBM FlashSystem family beginning with IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.2.

IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot is designed to deliver data protection for business-critical applications through integrated application snapshot backup and restore capabilities. These capabilities are achieved through the utilization of advanced storage- specific hardware snapshot technology to help create a high- performance, low-impact, application data protection solution.

IBM Copy Manager for IBM Spectrum Virtualize is offered as a per- enclosure license, up to twenty-four storage drives or up to 500 TB of total physical raw capacity per enclosure or storage device, and will be available to order through WTAAS and Passport Advantage. For SVC installations, the license limit is simply 500 TB of total physical raw capacity, measured against the FlashCopy source VDisk capacity of the system.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.4.0:

Expanding the three-site replication model to include HyperSwap improves data availability options in three-site implementations. Systems configured in a three-site topology have high disaster recovery capabilities, but a disaster may take the data offline until the system can be failed over to an alternate site. HyperSwap allows active-active configurations to maintain data availability, eliminating the need to failover if communications should be disrupted. This provides a more robust environment, allowing up to 100% uptime for data, as well as recovery options inherent to disaster recovery solutions. In addition, the previously limited deployment of three-site replication with Metro Mirror is generally available with 8.4.

Adding DRAID 1 support provides the ability to establish DRAID mirroring to smaller numbers of drives than with other levels of DRAID, reducing the minimum cost requirements to implement DRAID in a system. Traditional RAID 1 writes to one drive from the host but can read from both. Distributing the primary data between the drives in DRAID allows both reading and writing to both drives, improving overall performance in both I/O operations and during rebuilds. DRAID 1 supports a minimum of two drives, with no requirement to establish a rebuild area in two-drive configurations. Two-drive configurations are limited to SCM devices and flash drives, where the cost of additional devices can make DRAID 6 impractical in some instances.

Support of expanding mirrored vDisks with sync and format allows client to expand and reduce the size of their vDisks without requiring an offline format. This technology utilizes fast format on both devices at the same time, eliminating the need to sync once the format is complete. The benefit is that the newly expanded capacity is available and treated as in sync immediately, rather than having to wait for an offline format and synchronisation of the volumes.

This release increases the restriction of SCM drives per enclosure in the FlashSystem 5100, 7000, and 9000 families from four to twelve. The limit of twelve is effective in version 8.3.1 and later for zSSD drives, and version 8.4 and later for Optane drives.

DRPs receive several updates in 8.4:

  • FlashCopy volumes are optimised for flash devices by utilizing redirect-on-write technology versus copy-on-write designed for spinning disks. Redirect-on-write decreases the I/O amplification for snapshots, improving performance when using flash devices. This technology uses the DRP internal deduplication referencing mechanism to convert these situations to more efficient metadata operations, instead of requiring a complete data operation. Redirect on write is limited to deduplication volumes in the same IO pool that are not in a mirrored relationship.

  • Back-end clustering technology has been improved to reduce failover times, providing improved failover capabilities in the system.

  • In 8.4 the Compresstimator is always on. This allows the system to sample each volume at regular intervals, providing the ability to display the compressability of the data in the GUI and IBM Storage Insights at any time.

  • Support of a reconstruct read improves the data corruption handling algorithms in data reduction pools, improving reliability and availability of the data in these pools.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.3.1 delivers enhanced capabilities for select Storwize, FlashSystem, SVC, and IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud offerings.

  • DRAID set expansion will enable you to add more drives to an existing DRAID array without disrupting IO. You will be able to add up to 12 drives to the array in each expansion, up to the limit of 128 drives. You can also choose to assign the capacity of these new drives to add rebuild areas to the array, up to the maximum of four rebuild areas per array. Expansion works by taking free space at the end of the array, or by migrating a small amount of data to other free space in the pool. The array is then restriped with the new geometry, after which the data is migrated onto the new array geometry, using the new drives. This design means that users get to use new extents on the array as they are made available. Also, by restriping the array, users get the performance benefits of distributing data across more array members.
  • Three-site replication provides enhanced disaster tolerance for IBM Spectrum Virtualize systems, enabling coordination of data between three disparate sites for failover and failback. At this time, three- site replication requires the submission of a request through the SCORE system to help manage requirements and configuration details.
  • Easy Tier support for storage-class memory drives as a new highest tier.
  • Support for the new FlashSystem 7200 and 9200 systems, new SVC models, and other storage systems running storage-class memory devices.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.3.0 builds upon the already robust tools and functionality of IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2.1 to add support for the new Storwize V5100 systems.

Multitenancy

The storage system allows allocating storage resources to several independent administrators, assuring that one administrator cannot access resources associated with another administrator.

Multitenancy extends the storage system approach to role-based access control. In addition to associating the user with predefined sets of operations and scope (the applications on which an operation is allowed), the storage system enables the user to freely determine what operations are allowed, and where they are allowed.

When multitenancy is enabled, storage resources are allocated to several independent administrators with the assurance that one administrator cannot view or access resources that are associated with another administrator.

Data Reduction Pools performance enhancements

Handling of deduplication metadata in Data reduction pools has been optimised, driving incremental improvements in write bandwidth performance.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2.1 builds upon the already robust tools and functionality of IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2 and IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.1.3, supported on FlashSystem 9100, Storwize, SVC, and 9000.

The NVMe over Fibre Channel support on the 16 Gb Fibre Channel adapter expands the capabilities of the existing adapters and extends the simplicity, efficiency, and end-to-end NVMe model where NVMe commands and structures are transferred end to end and require no translations.

Full IP-based quorum delivers support for administrators looking to consolidate their infrastructure over Ethernet, eliminating Fibre Channel connections for intracluster communication. This saves cost and reduces bandwidth on any SANs used for storage connectivity.

64K host mappings extend the ability of administrators to provision for large numbers of hosts, particularly in virtual environments. Customers have been reaching the 20K limit available on existing levels.

Support for the call home transport protocol for Storage Insights enables customers to use a lighter-weight protocol for system monitoring, improving performance of both the system and the network in the process. This improves the overall customer experience when using Storage Insights to monitor large storage infrastructures, and provides a more robust path which will give higher bandwidth and frequency data transmission with end-to-end confirmation of receipt.

The single copy vdisk expand with format enables administrators to expand the capacity of a fully allocated single copy volume with fast format on expanded region by default, without having to create a new volume and migrate the data off the existing volume. This provides more flexible configurability of the system without consuming unnecessary capacity and enables the ability to expand fully allocated single copy volumes that are part of a replication relationship with fast format.

iSER support for host attachment optimizes the host connection options for hosts using Ethernet as their communication path to the storage device. iSER enables customers to improve performance while maintaining their investments in applications not ready for NVMe and eases cloud deployment with high-speed Ethernet. It is useful in software-defined storage systems as it is protocol agnostic with either iWarp or RoCE.

Clustering support over Ethernet using RDMA improves the performance of cluster communications, using the latest protocols and freeing up bandwidth on the SAN. Clustering enables IBM Spectrum Virtualize to run over multiple types of technology, such as RoCE, and iWARP.

Spectrum Virtualize 8.2.1 supports the Gemalto SafeNet Key Server release 8.3 onwards in addition to the IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager (SKLM).

IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.2 builds upon the already robust tools and functionality of IBM Spectrum Virtualize 8.1 to add support for the new FlashSystem 9100 systems and clustering with the Storwize 7000. Additionally, these two platforms now support iSER protocol host attachment.

Lower latencies and higher bandwidth requirements can be addressed by using RDMA to implement iSCSI. iSER is a new interconnect protocol that allows iSCSI to run on top of RDMA technology. RDMA can be implemented by using RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) or iWARP (Internet Wide-area RDMA Protocol). iSER enables iSCSI to run on top of it regardless of which of these technologies is used underneath.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Enhanced High Availability Cluster software is a specific license to use SVC Model SV1 nodes to provide stretched cluster capabilities to FlashSystem 9100 series installations. This license is not intended as a replacement for standard SVC installations; standard SVC installations should use IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller (5641-VC8 or 5725-M19). Supported configurations include two or four active SVC nodes, each in front of one FlashSystem 9100 system. Customers may also add up to four SVC hot spare nodes to the configuration, using standard best practices. Customers using this software license are entitled to use stretched cluster (including capacity used for a quorum disk), FlashCopy, Remote Mirroring, and Easy Tier features of the SVC software. Any other advanced functionality, such as encryption and compression, is managed by the underlying storage systems. Virtualization of additional systems is not supported, except during a 45-day period to migrate data to the new systems. When using this license for the intended configurations, one license is purchased per SVC node; there is no requirement for per SCU licensing as per the standard SVC software agreements, and there are no optional features. For customers looking to expand their feature set on their SVCs at a later date (or utilize larger clusters), standard SVC software licenses may be applied to these systems at any time. These licenses may be purchased or preexisting per SCU licenses in the enterprise and country.

Hardware requirements

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 9110 Controller (5639-FA2) requires at least one IBM FlashSystem 9110 control enclosure (9846-AF7, 9848-AF7, or 9848-UF7 ) for installation.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 9150 and 9200 Controller (5639-FA3) requires at least one IBM FlashSystem 9150 control enclosure (9846-AF8, 9848-AF8, or 9848-UF8) or one IBM FlashSystem 9200 (9846-AG8, 9848-AG8, or 9848-UG8), for installation.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 9x00 Expansions (5639-FA1) requires at least one IBM FlashSystem 9100 expansion enclosure (9846-AFF, 9846-A9F, 9848-AFF, or 9848-A9F) for installation. The high-density enclosures (9846-A9F and 9848-A9F) require four of the base software charge codes to support the number of drive slots in the system.

One IBM Spectrum Virtualize Enhanced High Availability Cluster Software license must be purchased for each SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Model SV1 integrated into the system. Two or four SVC nodes are supported, each with one IBM FlashSystem 9100 system to be managed. All SVC nodes are to be configured in a stretched cluster configuration, per the standard SVC guidelines

Software requirements

An IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 9110 Controller (5639-FA2) license is required for each IBM FlashSystem 9110 control enclosure (9846-AF7, 9848-AF7, or 9848-UF7 )

An IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 9150 Controller (5639-FA3) license is required for each IBM FlashSystem 9150 control enclosure (9846-AF8, 9848-AF8, or 9848-UF8)

An IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 9100 Expansions (5639-FA1) license is required for each 2U expansion enclosure (9846-AFF, 9848-AFF), with four 5639-FA1 licenses required for each 5U high-density enclosure (9846-A9F, 9848-A9F)

The 5639-FA1, 5639-FA2 and 5639-FA3 licenses allow the use of all Spectrum Virtualize function except encryption for all storage contained within the licensed enclosures. Encryption is subject to the purchase of Feature Code #ACE7, where available. The use of externally virtualized storage is not covered by these licenses and is subject to the same capacity based licensing as SAN Volume Controller.

Installation of IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software 8.3 can be done directly from systems running IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software 8.2.1, or later.

IBM includes one year of software maintenance with each program license acquired. The initial period of software maintenance can be extended by the purchase of the applicable two-, three-,four-, or five-year software maintenance registration program number and features.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Enhanced High Availability Cluster Software requires a minimum of version 8.1 of Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller. This entitles the customer to stretched cluster, FlashCopy, Remote Mirror, and EasyTier features of the IBM Spectrum Virtualize software installed on the SVC nodes.

Customer responsibilities

Planning considerations for IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software are listed in IBM Knowledge Center at the IBM FlashSystem 9100 website.

Customers with enclosure licenses for optional functions, such as Easy Tier and FlashCopy, are responsible to combine the total number of enclosures managed for each function to ensure they are within the enterprise license entitlement (within that country) for each function.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Limitations

This program only operates on specified storage hardware as detailed in the Hardware requirements section.

Security, auditability, and control

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software can use an existing LDAP for authentication, for example interfacing with Microsoft Active Directory.

Use of supplementary antivirus software is recommended, but not required.
