Highlights

Top rule

IBM FlashSystem 7300, machine type 4657, offers IBM Storage Expert Care service and support options in combination with IBM Spectrum Virtualize software, IBM FlashCore Modules, IBM Storage Insights, and storage-class memory to deliver a Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) accelerated, hybrid cloud-enabled storage system. IBM FlashCore Modules and the use of storage-class memory as a higher level storage tier enables FlashSystem 7300 to deliver the highest available performance with the lowest latencies in its class.

FlashSystem 7300 is the replacement for FlashSystem 7200. It is a 2U, 24 NVMe, dual controller drawer that will take advantage of the second release from Intel of the Cascade Lake processor for greater performance.

FlashSystem 7300 utility model U7D delivers a variable capacity system, where billing is based on actually provisioned space above the base. The base subscription is covered by a three-year lease that entitles you to utilize the base capacity at no additional cost. If storage needs increase beyond the base capacity, usage is billed based on the average daily provisioned capacity per terabyte, per month, on a quarterly basis.

Continuing with the commitment to transform data value with a complete NVMe strategy, FlashSystem 7300 comes with support for storage-class memory NVMe drives. These small capacity, ultra-low latency drives can be used in conjunction with Easy Tier to further improve the overall performance of your NVMe workloads, or as a stand alone flash storage tier with even higher performance. 1.6 TB NVMe storage-class memory drives are supported in FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 control enclosures.

IBM FlashCore Modules and industry standard NVMe drive options

FlashSystem 7300 is designed for IBM FlashCore Modules, storage- class memory drives, and industry-standard NVMe flash drives. FlashCore Modules have an increased effective capacity, which if the workload allows, can store up to three times the physical capacity of the drive. These can be augmented with storage-class memory drives to accelerate your top tier workloads. Deployments requiring higher flexibility, scalability, density, and cost benefits of hard disk drives can take advantage of FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures.

  • 3.84 TB NVMe flash drive
  • 7.68 TB NVMe flash drive
  • 15.36 TB NVMe flash drive
  • 30.72 TB NVMe flash drive

All drives are dual-port and hot-swappable. Drives can be intermixed in the control enclosure as long as configuration rules are followed. Expansion enclosures can be intermixed behind the control enclosure.

Drive options and intermix flexibility meet a complete range of needs

FlashSystem 7300 is designed to support the complete range of data storage requirements, from highly utilized applications to high- capacity, low usage applications, and can be configured as an all- flash or a hybrid-flash array.

Attachment and intermixing of existing machine type 2076 and 4664 expansion enclosure models 12F, 12G, 24F, 24G, and 92F, 92G, A9F, and AFF with machine type 4657 FlashSystem 7300 controller and expansion models is not supported.

Scalable configurations respond to growing capacity needs

A single FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 control enclosure can support up to 10 FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures with a maximum of 392 drives per system. Expansion enclosures are designed to be dynamically added with no downtime, helping to quickly and seamlessly respond to growing capacity demands.

FlashSystem 7300 systems can be clustered to help deliver greater performance, bandwidth, and scalability. A clustered FlashSystem 7300 system can contain up to four FlashSystem 7300 systems and up to 1,568 drives.

Machine type 4657 FlashSystem 7300 systems can only be clustered with other FlashSystem 7300 systems. Clustering with machine types 2076, 4664, 4666, 9846, or 9848 is not supported.

Further scalability can be achieved with virtualization of external storage. When FlashSystem 7300 virtualizes an external system, capacity in that external system inherits the functional richness and ease of use of FlashSystem 7300.

Designed for high availability

FlashSystem 7300 is designed to offer high system and data availability with the following features:

  • HyperSwap
  • Dual-active, intelligent node canisters with mirrored cache
  • Dual-port drives with automatic drive failure detection and RAID rebuild with global hot spares
  • Redundant hardware, including power supplies and fans
  • Hot-swappable and customer replaceable components
  • Automated path failover support for the data path between the server and the drives

Encryption for enhanced data security

FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 supports encryption for data at rest. Encryption is performed by the NVMe drives and managed by the FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure for internal drives. FlashSystem 7300 control enclosures can also encrypt all attached FlashSystem 7300 expansion enclosures and data stored in externally virtualized storage subsystems.

Encryption is enabled on FlashSystem 7300 through the acquisition of the Encryption Enablement feature. This feature enables encryption on the entire FlashSystem 7300 system, including the FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure and all attached FlashSystem 7300 expansion enclosures, as well as externally virtualized storage subsystems.

The Encryption USB Flash Drives (Four Pack) feature or a supported key server are required for encryption keys management.

Rich set of functional capabilities

IBM Spectrum Virtualize combines a variety of IBM technologies, including deduplication, compression, thin provisioning, SCSI Unmap, HyperSwap (high-availability solution), Easy Tier (automatic and dynamic data tiering), encryption of internal and external virtualized storage, FlashCopy (snapshot, Safeguarded Copy), and remote data replication. These technologies are designed to enable FlashSystem 7300 to offer a rich set of functional capabilities and deliver extraordinary levels of storage efficiency when used together.

FlashSystem 7300 functional capabilities are provided through IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 7000. For additional information about FlashSystem 7300 functional capabilities and software, see the materials listed in the Reference Information section.
