The IBM 2078 is the hardware component of the IBM Storwize V5000 disk system. Storwize V5000, the intermediate Storwize family offering, is a highly flexible, easy to use, virtualized storage system designed to enable midsized organizations to overcome their storage challenges with advanced functionality

Storwize V5000 models offered under this machine type have a three year warranty. Storwize V5000 models with a one year warranty are offered under machine type 2077.

Model abstract 2078-12C

The IBM 2078 Storwize V5000 LFF Control Model 12C features dual node canisters and 16 GB cache in a compact, 2U 19-inch rack mount enclosure. 6 Gb SAS and 1 Gb iSCSI host attachment support is standard, along with either 8 Gb FC or 10 Gb iSCSI/FCoE host attachment. It holds up to twelve (12) 3.5-inch SAS drives and supports the attachment of up to nineteen Storwize V5000 expansion enclosures.

All models are delivered in a 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosure and include a three year warranty with customer replaceable unit (CRU) and on-site service. Optional warranty service upgrades are available for enhanced levels of warranty service.

Description

Storwize V5000 is a highly flexible, easy to use, virtualized storage system that enables midsized organizations to meet the challenges of rapid data growth and limited IT budgets. As an intermediate Storwize family offering, Storwize V5000 enables organizations to consolidate and provide new capabilities to their existing infrastructures. With flexible licensing options, Storwize V5000 makes it easy to deploy complementary solutions, such as IBM ProtecTIER.

The IBM 2078 is the hardware component of the IBM Storwize V5000 disk system. Storwize V5000 is available in the following models:

Storwize V5000 control enclosure models include two node canisters each with 8 GB cache for a system total of 16 GB cache. 6 Gb SAS and 1 Gb iSCSI connectivity is standard and both models are additionally configured with either 8 Gb FC or 10 Gb iSCSI/FCoE connectivity.

The LFF enclosure models support up to twelve 3.5-inch drives, while the SFF enclosure models support up to twenty-four 2.5-inch drives. High-performance disk drives, high-capacity nearline disk drives, and flash (solid state) drives are supported. Drives of the same form factor can be intermixed within an enclosure and LFF and SFF enclosures can be intermixed within a Storwize V5000 system.

A Storwize V5000 system scales up to 480 drives with the attachment of 19 Storwize V5000 expansion enclosures. Storwize V5000 systems can be clustered to help deliver greater performance, bandwidth, and scalability. A Storwize V5000 clustered system can contain two Storwize V5000 systems and up to 960 drives.

All Storwize V5000 functional capabilities are provided through IBM Storwize Family Software for Storwize 5000.

Storwize V5000 includes four 6 Gb SAS ports and four 1 Gb Ethernet (iSCSI) ports standard and must be additionally configured with either eight 8 Gb FC ports or four 10 Gb Ethernet (iSCSI/FCoE) ports.

Drive options and intermix flexibility to meet a complete range of needs

Storwize V5000 is designed to support the complete range of data storage requirements, from highly utilized applications to high-capacity, low usage applications.

The following 3.5-inch (LFF) drives are supported:

High-performance, enterprise class disk drives
- 300 GB and 600 GB 15,000 rpm
- 900 GB, 1.2 TB, and 1.8 TB 10,000 rpm
High-capacity, archival-class nearline disk drives
- 2 TB, 3 TB, 4 TB, 6 TB, and 8 TB 7,200 rpm

The following 2.5-inch (SFF) drives are supported:

Flash state drives
- 200 GB, 400 GB, 800 GB, 1.6 TB, and 3.2 TB
High-performance, enterprise class disk drives
- 146 GB, 300 GB, and 600 GB 15,000 rpm
- 600 GB, 900 GB, 1.2 TB, and 1.8 TB 10,000 rpm
High-capacity, archival-class nearline disk drives
- 1 TB and 2 TB 7,200 rpm

All drives are dual-port and hot-swappable. Drives of the same form factor can be intermixed within an enclosure and LFF and SFF expansion enclosures can be intermixed within a Storwize V5000 system.

Scalable configurations to respond to growing capacity needs

A single Storwize V5000 control enclosure can support up to 19 Storwize V5000 expansion enclosures with a maximum of 480 drives per system.

With two-way system clustering, the size of the system can be doubled to a maximum of 960 drives.

Further scalability can be achieved with virtualization of external storage. When Storwize V5000 virtualizes an external disk system, capacity in the external system inherits the functional richness and ease of use of Storwize 5000.

Designed for high availability

Storwize V5000 is designed to offer high system and data availability with:

Dual-active, intelligent node canisters with mirrored cache
Dual port disk drives with automatic disk drive failure detection and RAID rebuild with global hot spares
Redundant hardware, including power supplies and fans
Hot-swappable and customer replaceable components
Automated path failover support for the data path between the server and the drives

Rich set of functional capabilities

Storwize V5000 combines a variety of IBM technologies, including thin provisioning, automated tiering, storage virtualization, clustering, replication, multiprotocol support, and a next-generation GUI. It also includes leading third-party technologies, such as Bridgeworks SANSlide network optimization. These technologies are designed to enable Storwize V5000 to offer a rich set of functional capabilities and deliver extraordinary levels of storage efficiency when used together.

All Storwize V5000 functional capabilities are provided through IBM Storwize Family Software for Storwize 5000.

Host interface cables

Host interface cables are required to connect Storwize V5000 host ports to server or fabric ports.

FC: Storwize V5000 requires a 50.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable terminated with an LC Duplex connector. The following fiber optic cables can be ordered with Storwize V5000 control enclosure models:

1 Gb iSCSI: Storwize V5000 requires a Category 5 or Category 5E Ethernet cable terminated with an 8P8C modular connector (RJ45 compatible connector). This cable is not available for ordering with the machine and must be supplied by the customer.

Expansion enclosure attachment cables

Expansion enclosure attachment cables are required to connect a Storwize V5000 expansion enclosure to the Storwize V5000 control enclosure and to another Storwize V5000 expansion enclosure. This requires a mini-SAS HD 4x cable terminated with an SFF-8644 connector.

The following SAS cables can be ordered with Storwize V5000 expansion enclosure models:

12 Gb SAS drives: Select drives offered on Storwize V5000 support up to a 12 Gb per second data transfer rate. These drives will operate up to only a 6 Gb per second data transfer rate when installed in a Storwize V5000 system.
