Abstract

The Power System LC922 server is designed to deliver superior performance and meet the open source workload data requirements being driven by the AI era. It is the server of choice for clients that want compute capabilities enabled by POWER9, scaling efficiency with the POWER9 advanced I/O, and ample storage capacity to contain the AI data volumes. Additionally, the server is simple to order and cost optimised, and can scale from single racks to large clusters with a simple deployment.

The Power LC922 server supports one or two processor sockets, offering 16-core (2.91 GHz) or 20-core (2.70 GHz) or 22-core (2.6 GHz) IBM POWER9 configurations in a 19-inch rack-mount, 2U (EIA units) drawer configuration. No mixing of processors is allowed.

The Power LC922 server provides two hot-swap and redundant power supplies and two, four, six, eight, twelve, or sixteen DIMM memory slots. Supported memory features are 6 GB (#EKMF), 32 GB (#EKMG), and 64 GB (#EKMD). No mixing of memory is allowed.

The Power LC922 server also offers:

  • Superior throughput and performance for high-value Linux workloads
  • Low acquisition cost through system optimization (industry standard memory and industry standard three-year warranty)
  • Rich I/O options in the system unit, including:
    • Two PCIe G4 x16 FHFL slots, CAPI 2.0 enabled
    • Three PCIe G4 x8 FHFL slots, one CAPI 2.0 enabled (all physically x16)
    • One PCIe G4 x8 LP slot
  • Twelve LFF/SFF bays for twelve SAS/SATA HDDs or SSDs and four available for NVMe Gen3
  • Includes TPM2.0 Nuvoton NPCT650ABAWX through I2C (for secure boot and trusted boot)
  • Integrated MicroSemi PM8069 SAS/SATA 16-port Internal Storage Controller PCIe3.0 x8 with RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 support (no write cache)
    • Selecting a 4Kn HDD requires an LSI HBA to be chosen. SSDs must be formatted by the client to 512-byte sectors for RAID. The Integrated SAS/SATA controller (PM8069) does not support RAID 4Kn devices (SSD or HDD).
    • Integrated SAS/SATA controller (PM8069) does not have a SED feature, but can use unlocked SED drives.
  • Integrated Intel XL710 Quad Port 10GBase-T PCIe3.0 x8 UIO built-in LAN (one shared management port)

The IBM 9006 Power System LC922 server is a storage-rich, powerful 2-socket server that offers I/O configuration flexibility and is designed to deliver superior performance and throughput for high-value Linux workloads. Additionally, the server is simple to order and can scale from single racks to large clusters with a simple deployment. The server supports up to two processor sockets with fully activated cores in a 19-inch rack-mount, 2U (EIA units) drawer configuration, and provides eight, twelve, or sixteen DIMM memory slots, can contain over 1 TB of system memory and up to six adapter cards. The server features are designed for big data workloads and business-critical applications.

Power LC922 (9006-22P) system configuration

The minimum Power LC922 (9006-22P) initial order must include one processor module, two 16 GB memory adapters, two line cords, rack- mounting hardware, a system software indicator, a rack integrator specify, and a Language Group Specify.

Linux is the operating system. The minimum defined initial order configuration is as follows:

Note: If a rack is wanted, it must be ordered as an MTM rack on initial system orders. If the rack is included on the same system order, it will be shipped at the same time in the same shipment, but in separate packing material. IBM does not offer IBM Manufacturing rack integration of the server into the rack before shipping at this time.

Processor modules

A minimum of one processor module is required with up to sixteen cores featured in EKPD processor or twenty cores featured in EKPC processor or twenty-two cores featured in EKPE processor.

No processor activation features are used or orderable on the 9006-22P. All processor cores/"n-ways" are always fully activated.
Note: The mixing of different processor features on the same system is not allowed.

System memory

The server has 16 memory slots. Each memory slot can hold one memory feature. A minimum of two memory features is required. With 16 GB DIMMs, 32 GB of memory is required. With 32 GB DIMMs, 64 GB is required. With 64 GB DIMMs, 128 GB is required.

Memory must be plugged in pairs up to 8x DIMMs in 2-socket (or 4x DIMMs in 1-socket) and then in groups of 4x DIMMs afterward.
Note: The mixing of memory features is not allowed.

Plans for future memory upgrades should be taken into account when deciding which memory feature size to use at the time of the initial system order.

I/O adapters

Only LP adapters can be placed in LP slots. A x8 adapter can be placed in an x16 slot and a x16 adapter can be put into any of the x8 slots which are physically x16, but the PCIe BW will be reduced.

Power LC922 (9006-22P) system configuration

The minimum Power LC922 (9006-22P) initial order must include one processor module, two 16 GB memory adapters, two line cords, rack- mounting hardware, a system software indicator, a rack integrator specify, and a Language Group Specify.

Processor modules

A minimum of one processor module is required with up to sixteen- cores featured in EKPD processor or twenty-cores featured in EKPC processor or twenty-two-cores featured in EKPE processor allowed.

No processor activation features are used or orderable on the 9006-22P. All processor cores/"n-ways" are always fully activated.
Note: The mixing of different processor features on the same system is not allowed.

System memory

The server has 16 memory slots. Each memory slot can hold one memory feature. A minimum of two memory features is required. With 16 GB DIMMs, 32 GB of memory is required. With 32 GB DIMMs, 64 GB is required. With 64 GB DIMMs, 128 GB is required.

Memory must be plugged in pairs up to 8x DIMMs in 2-socket (or 4x DIMMs in 1-socket) and then in groups of 4x DIMMs afterward.
Note: The mixing of memory features is not allowed.

Plans for future memory upgrades should be taken into account when deciding which memory feature size to use at the time of the initial system order.

Only LP adapters can be placed in LP slots. A x8 adapter can be placed in an x16 slot and a x16 adapter can be put into any of the x8 slots which are physically x16, but the PCIe BW will be reduced.

This indicator is used to specify that the rack mountable device in this initial order should not be merged into a rack within IBM Manufacturing. If a device with 4650 is ordered with a rack, the device will not be factory integrated in the ordered rack and will ship uninstalled in the rack.
Note: This "no additional charge" feature will be placed on an initial order for a rack mountable device by the Configuration Tool when the order does not ship from IBM Manufacturing in a Rack.
