Overview

Top rule

Businesses large and small need to ensure that every order, every payment, and every customer interaction counts. It takes time to build the right mix of applications, to integrate with partners, and build a successful business. Maximize your investments by ensuring messages between enterprise applications are delivered reliably once-and-only-once, and decouple your applications to rapidly respond to a sudden increase in traffic or a system outage.

IBM® MQ can be deployed to public clouds or private data centers to connect applications and data wherever they reside. You can even tap into the value of existing data as it flows around the enterprise to gain real-time insights or react to events as they happen, while robust security mechanisms keep critical business and customer data safe.

MQ 9.3 is the follow-on long-term support release (LTSR) to MQ 9.2. With the LTSR, fix packs will only provide fixes that include no new functions.

Description

Top rule

MQ 9.3 includes enhancements that were introduced in version 9.2.x CD releases and new function, first available in MQ 9.3. Following are some details of what MQ 9.3 contains. Capabilities that are available only in the IBM MQ Advanced offering are identified separately.

An improved getting-started experience

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • Enhancements to the MQ Console enable new users to get started more easily than ever before, confidently sending and receiving messages through the graphical user interface.
    • AMQP is an open-source messaging protocol designed to effectively support a wide range of messaging applications and communication patterns. Support for applications using Apache Qpid JMS that use point-to-point messaging with Advanced Message Queuing Protocol 1.0 (AMQP) is added. Additionally, browse support and additional channel attributes are now available for the AMQP open message protocol.
    • When installing on Microsoft™ Windows™ or through silent install, users who have selected to install MQ Advanced capabilities are informed during the install process to reduce the risk of installing MQ Advanced features in error.

Simplified cloud-native deployment and improved high availability, scalability, and resilience

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • Transactional applications, IBM WebSphere® Liberty JEE applications, request-and-reply applications, and .NET clients can be connected to a uniform cluster. Uniform cluster usability enhancements improve deployment and administration experience. The objective of a uniform cluster is that applications can be designed for scale and availability and can connect to any of the queue managers within the uniform cluster. This removes any dependency on a specific queue manager, resulting in better availability and workload balancing of messaging traffic.
    • MQ supports autoscaling based on queue depth using the Kubernetes-based Event Driven Autoscaler (KEDA). KEDA is an Apache 2.0-licensed open-source project that was created by Microsoft and Red Hat®. It has become a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) sandbox project. It was designed to provide better scaling options for event-driven applications on Kubernetes. For more information, see the Introduction to KEDA article.
  • Capabilities in MQ Advanced 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • Native HA (high availability) is available to IBM Cloud Pak® for Integration clients for container-based queue managers being deployed to IBM Cloud Pak for Integration on Red Hat OpenShift® using the MQ certified container. Additionally, Native HA is now available to deploy in containers on Kubernetes. An example Helm chart has been provided in the ibm-messaging GitHub. Supported container runtimes are documented under the Runtime Environments section of the MQ system requirement pages.

Native HA is designed to deliver efficient and security-rich replication of data for redundancy, integrated with quorum-controlled failover for safe and fast recovery from failures. Critically, this provides the same data integrity and consistency that you would expect from MQ, which is designed to provide full protection for every recoverable operation and message, to ensure that none are duplicated or lost. Native HA does not require any changes to your applications or restrictions to their behavior.

    • The IBM MQ Advanced certified container can be used to deploy a production-ready IBM MQ image to IBM Cloud Pak for Integration or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.
    • Replicated Data Queue Managers (RDQM) had several enhancements, including:
      • HA failed resource action identification and resolution. Failed resource actions can prevent queue manager failover or result in a queue manager running in a nonpreferred location. These can be displayed and resolved using dedicated commands.
      • RDQM HA and disaster recovery (DR) last "in sync" time information is now reported when nodes are not in sync, which can help with problem determination and recovery.
      • RDQM relies on a kernel module to provide data replication. Enhancements are delivered to help clients ensure they have loaded the correct kernel module and to improve diagnostics.

The ability to tap into existing data with new streaming queues

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • Streaming queues enable clients to tap into the value of data flowing over MQ. Streaming queues enable you to make message data available to Apache Kafka, AI, and analytics applications for real-time processing. There are no architectural changes required to your existing queues and, importantly, zero impact to existing applications.

Enhanced administration for improved user experience

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • MQ Console remote queue manager support enables clients to view and manage their MQ estate from a single user interface, regardless of whether queue managers are deployed in distributed, IBM z/OS®, MQ Appliance, or cloud environments. In addition, there are several enhancements to the usability of the MQ Console to improve the overall user experience.
    • Enhancements have been made to MQ Script (MQSC) commands to make it easier to ensure that queue managers are configured in a consistent way.
    • Messages that cannot be delivered to their correct destination are stored on a Dead Letter Queue (DLQ) for later retrieval and are processed or removed by a DLQ handler. The DLQ handler can connect to a remote queue manager and is included in the client package, in addition to the server package in which it is already available. This means that the DLQ handler can now connect to either a local or remote queue manager, including an MQ Appliance or cloud environment.
    • Additional REST API enhancements for improved administration.
    • REST Messaging API enhancements: The messaging REST API is used to perform simple point-to-point and publish messaging. For instance, messages can be published to a topic, sent to a queue, browsed on a queue, and destructively got from a queue. This RESTful API enables creating and consuming MQ messages without requiring an MQ client install. User properties can be set on messages, enabling the identification and routing of messages more effectively. In addition, message priority can be set with the messaging REST API, and there is better support for correlation and message IDs.

Security enhancements

Security is an important consideration for developers of MQ applications and MQ system administrators. MQ 9.2.x includes several security enhancements that build on the existing robust security mechanisms to help ensure your mission-critical business data is protected, including:

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • The authority model has been simplified for MQ running in containers to enable you to define permissions for users without the users having to exist in a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server.
    • Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 for Java™ 8 is supported.
    • A TLS-only mode is available, and users are notified when a non-TLS communication is enabled.
    • Client Server Name Indicator (SNI) offers additional flexibility by enabling users to set a custom hostname instead of a channel name in the TLS SNI header.
    • .NET support for SNI over TLS.
    • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) stanza password encryption and SNI password encryption have been added.
    • TLS support for the IBM MQ .NET XA Monitor application is added.
    • MQ Internet Pass-Thru (IPT) supports TLS 1.3 and can support multiple queue manager certificates.
  • Capabilities in MQ Advanced 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • MQ Advanced Message Security (AMS) password protection enhancements to improve security with AMS.

Updates to MQ Advanced Managed File Transfer capabilities

Among the additional capabilities provided by MQ Advanced is the ability to move file data over the MQ network with IBM MQ Advanced Managed File Transfer (MFT). MQ MFT is a more reliable and efficient means for secure data and file transfer, outpacing and outperforming applications like File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), and other methods.

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ Advanced 9.2.x CD releases:
    • MFT protocol bridge agent enhancements now enable users to limit file transfers per FTP and SFTP endpoint to reduce the risk of bottlenecks and effectively prioritize file transfers.
    • The MFT file logger component is now part of the redistributable MFT package to enable clients to optionally copy published information about actions for analysis and auditing purposes.
    • Commands to start and stop resource monitors. These two commands allow a resource monitor to start or stop without the need to stop/start an agent.
    • Assets to deploy the MFT agent in Red Hat OpenShift and Docker environments are now available, including an image published in Docker Hub with GitHub samples to enable customization.
    • Transfer logs are now provided for enhanced visibility of file transfer status. This provides more information to the user about the activities of MFT agents, including details of successful transfers and any failure cases. Transfer logs can assist users in resolving common problems and can be used to supply more detailed diagnostics if required by IBM support.
    • When clients run the RAS gathering tool with the fteRAS command, additional information is provided to confirm progress. The fteRAS command runs the RAS gathering tool to collect troubleshooting information (MustGather data). The data that fteRAS collects is specific to the Managed File Transfer installation on the system where the program is being run.

  • Capabilities that first appear in MQ Advanced 9.3:
    • A REST API enables file data to be transferred over MQ with the create file transfer command. REST API commands have been updated to include commands to make a managed call request over the REST API, which is submitted through MQ to an MFT Agent. This allows for the full power of MFT Agents to be realized outside of transferring data.

Other enhancements and platform updates

  • Capabilities in MQ 9.3 that first appeared in MQ 9.2.x CD releases:
    • MQ client support for Adoptium and IBM Semeru Java 11 runtimes
    • MQ client support for Oracle and Adoptium Java 17 runtimes
    • Windows Server 2022 support
    • Windows 11 support
    • The IA94 SupportPac has been repackaged to be unzippable and go with no installation and is also now licensed to be redistributable with applications. There are also defect fixes and other lifecycle updates. It is supported on Microsoft Windows, Linux® x86-64 and AIX®.
  • Capabilities that first appeared in MQ 9.3:
    • JMS 3.0 support is provided to extend the set of environments in which MQ can be used.
    • .NET 6 support
    • The MQ Explorer has been removed from the IBM MQ install package. It remains available to clients as a separate download.
    • The previously deprecated widget-based Dashboard Web Console has now been removed.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. Two charges apply: a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information about known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, see the IBM Support Guide.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support enables you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product as long as your Software Subscription and Support is in effect. Software Subscription and Support also provides you with access to versions, releases, and updates (CD releases, LTSRs, or fixes) of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice

MQ for Multiplatforms 9.3 is a LTS release and provides predictable support through iFixes and fix packs for a minimum period of five years from the general availability date. A minimum three-year extension of support is available for an additional fee.

MQ for Multiplatforms 9.3 is also a CD Release. The MQ Advanced container and MQ Explorer delivered with MQ 9.3 are available as CD release only, with no LTS release option.

IBM will investigate defects on any supported level. Defect fixes are provided for a CD release for 12 months from the planned availability date or while it remains one of the two most recent CD releases, whichever is longer.

For additional information about the IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy, see the IBM Continuous Delivery Support Lifecycle Policy website. If you require additional technical support from IBM, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. An extension of support beyond the discontinuance date might be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
