What's new in Version 8.5
Rational Developer for Power Systems Software Performance Advisor (Performance Advisor) for C and C++ for AIX and Linux on Power
This is a new class of tools. It combines dynamic code analysis and profiling capabilities together with performance management features and expert guidance, all in a workflow-driven framework that helps you optimize the performance of C and C++ workloads as deployed to AIX and to Linux on Power .
This tool delivers performance analysis of C/C++ applications with capabilities such as hot spot analysis that are linked with performance-annotated source code and views for program understanding. It includes support for analyzing time spent in inlined functions and it can show the results directly in the source view. It also allows you to compare two profiles of the application in order to easily detect regressions in performance across two builds.
Performance Advisor function additionally provides detailed recommendations for how you might improve the performance of the application. Each recommendation is shown together with a confidence indicator that suggests the probability that following the recommendation will yield a measurable gain. In this way the framework helps you decide how to prioritize performance work you have available to devote to performance work.
The Performance Advisor function can create a scorecard for your application, using best practices from our Power hardware, operating system and compiler teams to provide automated recommendations through general analysis of your application without needing to even run it.
The Performance Advisor function is built with intimate knowledge of the Power hardware, operating systems, XL compilers, and best-tuning practices to provide expert guidance for tuning the application. By using sampling technology, it can provide sophisticated profiling capabilities without significantly slowing down the runtime of the application.
The Performance Advisor function manages the vast and different performance information generated by the underlying profiling tools and presents the developer with an integrated, easy-to-use interface that will allow them to quickly and effectively tune their applications.
Porting and Migration Advisor (for AIX and Linux )
This is a new class of tool set that combines static code analysis capabilities with expert system rules that work together in a framework to help you migrate or port your C/C++ and COBOL applications to AIX and Linux on Power .
Enhanced data development tools
Rational Developer for Power integrates with Data Studio from IBM Optim to provide enhanced data tooling capabilities. The functions now supported include the following:
- Database overview diagram
- Integrated Query Editor
- SQL Builder
- SQL Outline View
- Create, Alter, Drop single database objects
- DDL generation
- Ability to export rows from the SQL results view
Additional functions are available for DB2® for AIX and Linux including Visual Explain and query formatting.
Code coverage analysis capability (for C, C++ and COBOL for AIX and Linux )
You can now view which sections of your C, C++ and COBOL code are exercised when your applications are run during unit testing or debugging. In addition to seeing which specific paths are run, the new code coverage capability also provides useful coverage statistics that may be used as inputs to your quality/risk management processes.
Best-practice-based build configuration documentation
This provides guidance on decisions such as compiler, runtime, and debug options that are specific to various kinds of build targets such as unit test, integration test, performance test, or production.
Support for multiple build specifications
You can define multiple sets of specifications to build projects for multiple targets. A 'target' as used here could refer to a purpose or promotion level (such as "test" or "production) or it could refer to target platform (for example, AIX on Power versus Linux on Power ).
Enhancements to basic C/C++ IDE when working in remote projects
Code folding and semantic highlighting are now available for C/C++ remote projects.
Light-weight debuggable executables
It is now possible to generate debug hooks and information into a side file so it does not enlarge the executables that you deploy into your production environments (or that you distribute to your end-user customers, if you are an ISV). The side file can remain in your development environment. Then you can obtain core files from the production (or customer) environment and attach to them with the debugger, using the same build version together with the side file. In this way, you can debug just as richly as if you were using a fully instrumented executable in the production (or customer) environment.
Live outline view for RPG applications
The outline review now refreshes as you change code, based on desktop-side parsing of RPG. This saves time and raises the developer's productivity.
Enhancements to the i Project Perspective
These enhancements improve the integration of the RPG and COBOL Development Tools for i with Rational Team Concert for IBM i development.
There is full two-way synchronization between i Projects in a local workspace and their associated libraries on remote IBM i systems. Users can also view the text description of their objects and source members in the Properties view when they are selected and have a Compile menu from which they can submit compile commands.
These improvements bring the i Project capabilities closer to parity with the capabilities that are available when you are using the Remote Systems Explorer perspective.
Service reliability enhancements
The server-side explorer and debug agents are improved so that when environmental conditions cause them to fail, they do so more gracefully. For example, they will now publish explanations of what conditions led to failures. They will provide diagnostics data for post-mortem analyses. They will let the desktop IDE know when they crash, so users are not left sitting and watching a progress icon that mysteriously never reaches completion.
Enhanced support for 64-bit desktop operating system
The product itself can now make use of expanded memory space using 64-bit JVM

Terms and conditions |
The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.
Licensing
IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011), agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.
These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM . Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
