Description |
Organizations need a single solution, a security and integration gateway that is capable of handling all types of application workloads with a policy-driven interface that is flexible for deployment on multiple cloud environments. This will promote consistent security, control, and integration policy enforcement and provide end-to-end security for transactional workloads, independent of the business channel or infrastructure platform.
DataPower Gateway Firmware V7.2 provides an extensible and modular architecture that provides enhanced security and integration capabilities for mobile, API, and web workloads. These capabilities can be deployed on-premise in a physical or virtual form factor, or on cloud environments, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SoftLayer by using SoftLayer CCI and bare-metal servers.
Cloud environments like Amazon AWS and SoftLayer provide a hosting environment where infrastructure can be deployed with an optimal set of resources and infrastructure support. Businesses can quickly build gateway solutions using DataPower Gateways and rely upon the cloud provider to maintain the underlying infrastructure. This allows workloads to be deployed on the cloud at lower costs with additional flexibility, while taking advantage of DataPower Gateway purpose-built firmware capabilities to optimize and secure their workloads.
Industry regulations and data privacy concerns are a critical part in designing and implementing enterprise applications. They are quite often the biggest hurdle that need to be overcome to adopt public cloud technologies. Hybrid cloud integration is becoming a common pattern to provide secure access to sensitive data hosted within enterprise data centers from public cloud platforms. The Secure Gateway service on DataPower Gateways provides secure connectivity between IBM Bluemix and on-premise enterprise applications. This functionality will provide enhanced hybrid cloud integration, being able to gain the elasticity and cost benefits of running workloads on Bluemix, while still having secure access to sensitive data hosted within on-premise systems.
Mobile transactions will flow through many individual server instances before reaching their ultimate destination. The mobile application that originated the request cannot guarantee the confidentiality and integrity of the message unless it is digitally encrypted and signed at the message-level. DataPower Gateways provide support for JSON Web Encryption, JSON Web Signature, which includes the ability to transfer security assertions between systems that use JSON Web Token. This support will provide even greater security for securing end-to-end mobile transactions.
Mobile applications use JSON payloads to render content obtained from backend services, which are often based on XML. The latest GatewayScript enhancements provide an API to easily transform between XML and JSON payloads. This allows you to support XML data in GatewayScript files and integrate GatewayScript with existing XSLT scripts.
DataPower Gateways are a DMZ-ready appliance that provides enhanced security at the edge of your network. DataPower Gateways are often the first line of defense for protecting against malicious attacks. This release provides stronger TLS security protocol support with ECC, PFS, and SNI which provides sophisticated cryptography for advance security.
This release introduces a RESTful management API that provides easier management of DataPower configuration; either for build automation or environment migration or custom scripts. This API offers an alternative interface to the existing SOMA management API, which is based on Web services. This REST API will provide easier devops and integration with build tools that use a REST architecture.
Other key enhancements to support DataPower multi-channel gateway security, integration, control, and optimization include:
- Additional load balancer group healthchecks that use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) half-open
- Improved security and traffic control functionality to support the API Management offering
- ISAM migration tools for migration between software or hardware ISAM products to the ISAM proxy module on DataPower
- Easily configure caching policies to improve response time with distributed caching support with WebSphere eXtreme Scale 8.6+

Metric definitions
Authorized User: A unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the Program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User given access to the Program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.
Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.
Install: A unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each install of the program.
Instance: A unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An entitlement is required for each instance of an application connected to or managed by the program. An application in a test, development, staging, or production environment is each considered to be a separate instance of the application and each must have an entitlement. As well, multiple application instances in a single environment are each considered to be separate instances of the application and each must have an entitlement.
Per Processor Value Unit: A unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table (http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html ) by Processor Vendor, Brand, Type and Model Number) and the number of processors made available to the Program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.
Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Agreement Terms ( http://www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/agreementsandforms.html). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity Counting Rules (http://www-01.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_speci fic_virtualization_technologies.html).
* An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes
Some programs may require licenses for the program AND what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores for the systems on which the resources managed or processed by the program reside.
Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis ONLY. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores for the systems on which the resources managed or processed by the program reside.
A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the Referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.
