DESCRIPTION
IBM 3090 PROCESSOR UNIT
o 3090 Model 280E
The 3090 Model 280E, previously available as an RPQ with limited
configurations, is now available as a standard 3090 model. It
supports all the functions and features of the 3090 Enhanced
family of processors, including the newly announced Enterprise
Systems Architecture/370 and the Processor Resource/Systems
Manager feature. The 280E is an MP processor complex consisting
of one processor on each side. It can operate in a single image
configuration (ESA/370 mode) or a Physically Partitioned
configuration (ESA/370 or System/370 mode). The 370-XA mode is a
subset of the ESA/370 mode. Upgradable from a 3090 Model 180 or
180E and to a 3090 Model 400E, the 280E provides an additional
growth option for customers needing additional capacity while
requiring physical backup.
o 3090 Model 500E
The 3090 Model 500E provides an upgrade option between
that of the currently available Models 400E and 600E. The
five-way 500E is configured with three processors on the A-side
and two processors on the B-side. It can operate in a single
image configuration or a Physically Partitioned configuration
(ESA/370 mode). 370-XA mode is a subset of ESA/370 mode. S/370
mode system control programs can be executed on the 500E when
PR/SM is used. The 500E is upgradable from a 3090 Model 300E or
400E. It can be upgraded to a 3090 Model 600E.
o 3090 Model 300E to 400E Upgrade
This upgrade provides an additional growth option for the
300E and results in a standard 3090 Model 400E with two
processors on each side.

VECTOR FACILITY: One optional Vector Facility feature can be
attached to each central processor (CP) in a processor complex. The
feature increases the numerically intensive computing performance
capability of the 3090 when iterative or repetitive logical or
floating point operations are to be applied to many related data
elements.
PERFORMANCE
Measurements and projections have been used to determine the
performance of the 3090 Models 280E and 500E.

PARTITIONED PERFORMANCE: When the 3090 Model 280E is in a Physically
Partitioned configuration, the performance of each partition is
expected to be that of a Model 180E. When the 3090 Model 500E is
Physically Partitioned, the performance on the A-Side partition is
expected to be that of a Model 300E, and the B-Side partition to be
that of a Model 200E.
Measurements and projections were made in a controlled
environment using standard performance workloads and methodology.
The actual throughput improvements that any user will experience will
vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of
multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, and
the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an
individual user will achieve throughput improvement equivalent to the
performance ratios stated here.
