Overview

IBM 7226 Model 1U3 Multimedia Enclosure delivers external tape, removable disk drive, and DVD-RAM drive options intended to enable the storage, retrieval, and archival of critical business, technical and scientific data in computer hardware facilities. The 7226 enclosure offers an expansive list of drive feature options.

7226 enclosures can accommodate up to two tape drives, two RDX removable disk drive docking stations, or up to four DVD-RAM drives. Model 1U3 attaches to most IBM POWER6, POWER7, POWER8, POWER9, POWER10, IBM PureFlex systems, IBM POWER®, and BladeCenters, and to systems running Linux and Microsoft Windows.

These SAS, FC, and USB device features may be installed in IBM 7226 dual-bay storage enclosures in any combination, and are supported on IBM POWER AIX®, IBM i, and Linux operation systems. 7226 is also compatible with most OEM operating systems running Linux or Microsoft Windows.

Mandatory software

IBM 7226 Multimedia Enclosure is compatible with most IBM POWER6, POWER7, POWER8, POWER9, and POWER10 systems, as well as IBM BladeCenter models (PS700, PS701, PS702, PS703, and PS704) and IBM PureFlex systems that offer current level AIX, IBM i, and LINUX operating systems.

System support of IBM 7226 features

IBM POWER Systems support all SAS, USB, and FC tape drives, DVD-RAM, and RDX removable drive features on 7226 enclosures.

IBM BladeCenters support DAT160, HHLTO5, HHLTO6, HHLTO7 HHLTO8, and HHLTO9 SAS tape drive features, and also support attachment of RDX removable drive features on the 7226. BladeCenters do not support DVD-RAM device or LTO FC tape drive attachment.

IBM PureFlex systems support attachment of HHLTO5, HHLTO6, HHLTO7, HHLTO8 and HHLTO9 FC tape drive features, DVD-RAM USB drive features, and RDX removable drive features. PureFlex systems do not support SAS tape drives and DVD-RAM devices.

Note: All new IBM tape device drivers will be posted to the web through the Fix Central download portal. IBM maintains the latest levels of Storage tape drive and library device drivers and documentation on the Internet.

IBM Storage offers HHLTO9 higher capacity tape drive features to the list of LTO tape, RDX, and DVD storage options. HHLTO9 tape drive features offer increased capacity compared to HHLTO8 tape drives currently available on IBM 7226 Model 1U3 Multimedia Enclosure.

Model 1U3 attaches to most IBM POWER systems, IBM Blade servers, IBM BladeCenter models, and IBM PureFlex systems.

The following LTO tape drive, DVD-RAM drive, and RDX removable storage device features are supported on the 7226:

  • Tape drive features: Half-height LTO5 (HHLTO5), half-height LTO6 (HHLTO6), half-height LTO7 (HHLTO7), HHLTO8, and HHLTO9 tape drives with serial-attached SCSI (SAS) and Fiber Channel (FC) electronic interface options.
  • DVD-RAM features: DVD-RAM drives with SATA/SAS and USB electronic interface options.
  • RDX3 removable disk drive features: Removable hard disk capacity options include a 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB, and attach to any available USB3 internal port.

These SAS, FC, and USB device features may be installed in the IBM 7226 dual-bay storage enclosure in any combination, and are supported on IBM POWER AIX, IBM i, and Linux operation systems. 7226 is also compatible with most OEM operating systems running Linux or Microsoft Windows.

IBM 7226 Quad Cable feature allows the attachment of up to four SAS devices to a single POWER system HBA port, and provides easy implementation of multiple 7226 storage enclosures on one or more POWER systems.

Software requirements

7226 storage enclosures are supported on AIX, IBM i, and Linux operating systems. VIOS 2.2 is required when attaching to IBM PureFlex systems using the IBM i operating system.

Cable orders

SAS cables: At least one SAS external cable will be provided with each tape or DVD-RAM drive specified on a 7226 Multimedia Enclosure. Each SAS device attaches to a separate IBM POWER system or BladeCenter SAS HBA port through the following features:

  • POWER6 and POWER7 feature numbers 5278, 5901, and 5912
  • POWER8, POWER9, and POWER10 feature numbers EJ10, EJ11, and EL10
  • BladeCenter feature number 8246

IBM PureFlex systems do not support SAS devices.

If the availability of IBM Power System SAS HBA ports are limited, a Quad External SAS Cable may be ordered by specifying feature number 5544. The Quad External SAS Cable enables the attachment of up to four SAS tape or DVD-RAM drive devices to a single POWER server. BladeCenters do not support the quad cable feature.

FC cables: One FC external cable will be provided with each HHLTO5, HHLTO6, HHLTO7, HHLTO8, and HHLTO9 FC tape drive specified on a 7226 Multimedia Enclosure. Each LTO tape drive attaches to a separate FC HBA port through the following features:

  • POWER6 and POWER7 systems HBA feature numbers 5273 or 5276
  • POWER8 feature numbers 5729, 5735, 5774, EL2N, and ENOA
  • POWER9 and POWER10 feature numbers EN1A, EN1C, EN1E, EN1J, EN2A, and EN2B
  • IBM PureFlex server FC feature number 1764

USB cables: One USB external cable will be provided with each USB drive or RDX docking station specified on a 7226 Multimedia Enclosure. Each USB device attaches to a separate IBM System USB port. USB device features on 7226 are supported for attachment to the internal USB ports on IBM POWER, IBM BladeCenters, and PureFlex systems. POWER systems also offer an external USB HBA through the following features:

  • POWER6 and POWER7 systems feature number 2728
  • POWER8 systems feature numbers EC45 and EC46
  • POWER9 and POWER10 feature number EC6J

Security, auditability, and control

The client is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
