Overview |
Multiple hardware enhancements are announced for Power Systems, including DDR4 memory, entry enhancements, SAS enclosures, disk, PCIe crypto card, PCIe 100Gb Ethernet card, expanded PCIe 100Gb IB support, lower-cost PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer attachment, and more.
DDR4 memory can provide up to 30% improved energy efficiency compared to equivalent DDR3 memory with the same high-performance, enterprise-class 1600 MHz memory characteristics currently offered with DDR3 technology. The Power E880, E880C, E870, and E870C servers are enhanced with DDR4 memory CDIMMs, which provide 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB capacity points. These are in addition to the existing 1 TB DDR4 capacity point. The IBM Power S812L, S814, S822, S822L, S824, and S824L servers are enhanced with 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB DDR4 memory features, matching the previously available DDR3 capacity points. The Power E850C server is introduced with DDR4 memory features, and the Power E850 server has a statement of direction for future additional DDR4 memory.
The Capacity Backup (CBU) for Power Enterprise Systems, formerly called Capacity Backup for PowerHA, has been enhanced to deliver greater flexibility for clients looking to lower their HA/DR costs. The new CBU for Power Enterprise Systems offering provides greater usage capability, eliminates many of the requirements and restrictions of the former offering and extends the offering farther down the Power Enterprise Systems product line. The CBU for Power Enterprise Systems offering is now available for the Power E870, E870C, E880, and E880C systems.
The 4-core or 6-core Power S814 server has two entry-specific enhancements. First, IBM i clients can order up to four lower-priced 15k rpm 283GB disk drives. The Express® Edition feature EU2C or EU2D is require to order these lower-price drives. Second, an RDX USB Top Mount Docking Station (#EUA3) is available for a Power S814 tower configuration. This provides more integrated RDX packaging for entry POWER8 servers running AIX, IBM i, or Linux.
The Power S822 server is enhanced for IBM i with firmware 860.10 clients to allow up to four cores per IBM i partition. With previous firmware levels, the maximum is two cores per IBM i partition.
The new EXP24SX is a storage expansion enclosure with twenty-four 2.5-inch SFF SAS bays. The storage enclosure supports up to 24 hot-swap hard disk drives (HDD) or SSDs in only 2 EIA of space in a 19-inch rack. The EXP24SX SFF bays use SFF Gen2 (SFF-2) carriers/trays identical to the carrier/trays in the previous EXP24S Drawer. It has been designed to support 12Gb SAS interfaces, double the existing EXP24S drawer bandwidth. The drawer can be configured to mode 1, 2, or 4, and its mode can be reconfigured at the client site following specific procedures.
The new EXP12SX is a storage expansion enclosure with twelve 3.5-inch LFF SAS bays. The storage enclosure supports up to 12 hot-swap HDDs in only 2 EIA of space in a 19-inch rack. The EXP12SX SFF bays use LFF Gen1 (LFF-1) carriers/trays. The 4 KB sector drives (4096 or 4224) of 7.72/8.0 TB or 3.86/4.0 TB are supported for AIX and Linux environments. The drawer can be configured to mode 1, 2, or 4, and its mode can be reconfigured at the client site following specific procedures.
Four feature numbers are used to identify these two SAS enclosures. The EXP24SX uses feature ESLS for servers supporting multiple operating systems and uses feature ELLS for servers that are Linux-only. The EXP12SX uses feature ESLL for servers supporting multiple operating systems and uses feature ELLL for servers that are Linux-only.
The PCIe Cryptographic Coprocessor 4767 is a high-performance hardware security module (HSM) suitable for high-security processing and high-speed cryptographic operations. IBM PCIe Cryptographic Coprocessor adapter (#EJ32/#EJ33) is the latest generation and fastest of the IBM cryptographic coprocessor family.
The new PCIe3 2-port 100 GbE (NIC and RoCE) QSFP28 Adapter x16 (#EC3M, #EC3L), based on the Mellanox ConnectX-4 Ethernet Network Controller, provides 100 Gb/s Ethernet connectivity.
Support for the 1-port and 2-port 100 Gb EDR InfiniBand adapters (#EC3T/#EC3E) is expanded to include more Power System models for Linux environments. The Power E880, E880C, E870, E870C, and E850C servers are now supported.
A new copper cable option (#ECCS) is available for Power scale-out servers and the Power E850 and E850C servers to attach the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer fanout module. This is a much lower-cost cabling option than the currently available active optical cables. Feature ECCS provides a pair of copper cables that have the same performance characteristics, but are thicker and are only 3 meters in length compared to optical cables.
The PCIe2 8Gb 2-Port Fibre Channel Adapter adds a lower-price 8 Gb Fibre Channel option for Linux-only S812L, S822L, and S824L POWER8 servers. The adapter (#EL5Y and #EL5Z) should now be used instead of the existing 8Gb 2-port feature EN0F and feature EN0G adapters on Linux-only servers.
POWER8 servers are enhanced with a new generation of intelligent, switched PDUs that provide more electrical receptacles, better monitoring, and the ability to remotely turn an individual receptacle on or off. Four new PDUs are introduced. Two have nine C19 receptacles, and two have twelve C13 receptacles. Either 1-phase or 3-phase power can be used, depending on the PDU and country wiring standard. These PDUs are follow-on products to the feature 7109, 7189, and 7196 PDUs. The existing feature 7188 PDU 12xC13 continues to be the lower-function, lower-cost option.
Support for the PCIe3 NVMe Flash Adapter (1.6 TB (#EC54/#EC55 and 3.2 TB #EC56/#EC57) is expanded. PCIe NVMe Flash Adapters can offer significant improvements in write latency and I/O throughput compared to using SAS-attached SSDs or FC-attached SSDs in SANs or FlashSystems for Linux applications using the high-performance NVMe interface protocol; for example, using the NVMe Flash Adapter for Rapid Restart of SAP HANA. The speed of the NVMe Flash Adapter helps the partition load more quickly, improving up-time of the application. These enhancements are announced:
- Boot drive support is added.
- Support is added for the Power E850 and E850C servers, joining existing support on many other POWER8 servers, including recently announced Power E870C and E880C servers running in a Linux environment.
- The Power S812L, S822L, and S824L systems now support Power NV mode, also known as bare metal.
Configuration flexibility for the PCIe3 2-port 10GbE (NIC and RoCE) Adapter is enhanced. This adapter is added to the list of Ethernet adapters that can be selected with a new server as the base Ethernet adapter in AIX/Linux environments.

Description |
DDR4 DRAM memory options for Power E870C/E880C, Power E870/E880, Power S812L, S822L, S822, and Power S814, S824, S824L servers
Refreshing memory options for existing DDR3 provides more configuration flexibility with improved energy efficiency. DDR4 DRAM uses up to 30% less energy and produces less heat than equivalent capacity DDR3 DRAM. Larger-capacity memory cards have a greater energy savings than smaller-capacity memory cards. Busy memory uses much more energy than idle memory. The memory controller and L4 cache and the electrical use of other memory card components in the CDIMM does not change whether using DDR3 or DDR4. Thus the overall DDR4 savings at a CDIMM level varies and is probably up to 20% less energy used per card. At a system level, this translates to perhaps up to a 2% - 3% energy savings on a server with a large amount of memory. The DDR4 memory and DDR3 memory have the same 1600 MHz speed, the same L4 cache, and the same on-card memory controller and thus have the same performance.
DDR4 and Power E870C/E880C and Power E870/E880 servers
These enterprise servers have a memory feature that represents four physical DDR4 1600MHz CDIMM memory cards:
- 64 GB (4 x 16 GB) DDR4 (#EM8U)
- 128 GB (4 x 32 GB) DDR4 (#EM8V)
- 256 GB (4 x 64 GB) DDR4 (#EM8W)
- 512 GB (4 x 128 GB) DDR4 (#EM8X)
The previously introduced 1 TB (4 x 256 GB) DDR4 (#EM8Y) continues to be supported.
DDR4 rules are identical to existing memory rules:
- A minimum of four memory feature codes per system node (50% memory slots filled).
- Memory activation features are the same for DDR3 or DDR4 memory.
- A minimum of 25% of the installed physical memory capacity must have static activations on that specific server.
- A minimum of 50% of the installed physical memory capacity must have activations (static, mobile, or mobile-enabled) on that specific server. Mobile activations moved elsewhere in a pool still apply toward meeting this minimum. Mobile activations moved into that specific server that are per IBM inventory records (AAS/WTAAS) still on a different server cannot be used for this minimum.
- DDR4 memory cannot be mixed on the same system node with DDR3 memory, but a multinode system can have DDR3 in one node and DDR4 in a different node.
- Only one size CDIMM can be placed on one single-chip module (SCM) (multiple size CDIMMs can be placed on one node). There are four SCMs per system node.
- Firmware 860, or later, is required for DDR4 features for 64 GB to 512 GB memory features and for having both DDR3 and DDR4 memory on the same multinode server.
On same-serial number model upgrades from the Power 770 (9117-MMD) to the Power E870C or E870 (9080-MME/9119-MME) or the Power 780 (9179-MHD) to the Power E880C or E880 (9080-MHE / 9119-MHE) servers, clients can optionally choose to convert their IBM POWER7® + memory into IBM POWER8 DDR4 memory. DDR4 memory options are available to the 64 GB feature (#EM8U), 128 GB feature (#EM8V), 256 GB feature (#EM8W), or 512 GB feature (#EM8X).
DDR4 and Power S812L, S822, and S822L
These 2U scale-out servers have a memory feature that represents one physical DDR4 1600 MHz DIMM memory card. The capacity options are identical to the existing DDR3 memory features. DDR4 features are:
- 16 GB DDR4 (#EM8P)
- 32 GB DDR4 (#EM8Q)
- 64 GB DDR4 (#EM8R)
DDR4 configuration rules are identical to DDR3 existing memory rules with two additions. DDR4 and DDR3 memory features cannot be mixed on the same system. Firmware 860, or later, is required for DDR4 features.
DDR4 and Power S814, S824, and S824L
These 4U scale-out servers have a memory feature that represents one physical DDR4 1600 MHz DIMM memory card. The capacity options are identical to the existing DDR3 memory features. DDR4 features are:
- 16 GB DDR4 (#EM91)
- 32 GB DDR4 (#EM92)
- 64 GB DDR4 (#EM93)
- 128 GB DDR4 (#EM94)
DDR4 configuration rules are identical to DDR3 existing memory rules with two additions. DDR4 and DDR3 memory features cannot be mixed on the same system. Firmware 860, or later, is required for DDR4 features.

A stop-ship will automatically be put in place until Manufacturing is notified that the CBU system meets configuration requirements based on the identified Power E870, E870C, E880, or E880C production system.
Two enhancements for Power System S814
IBM i entry S814 clients ordering a new 4-core or 6-core processor can optimally order up to four lower-priced 15k rpm 283 GB disk drives. The drives can either be 4k byte sector (#ESFG) or 5xx byte sector (#ESDV), and must be located in the S814 system unit (SFF-3). The IBM i Edition feature EU2C for the 4-core and feature EU2D for the 6-core S814 are prerequisites.
These drives are available only with the shipment of a new server and are not available as an MES order. Following normal configuration rules, they can be mixed with other SAS feature drives. Features ESFG (4k) and ESDV (5xx) cannot be mixed on the same server.
AIX, IBM i, and Linux entry S814 clients ordering a new 4-core or 6-core processor that is a tower configuration have a new RDX option. Feature EUA3 ships an RDX docking station and an enclosure for the docking station. The enclosure is firmly mounted on top of a Power S814 tower configuration. It is not available for a rack-mounted configuration. The enclosure adds about 5 cm (2 in.) height to the tower. Feature EUA3 is factory installed only and cannot be orderable as an MES. The RDX docking station can be removed from the enclosure using concurrent maintenance.
The RDX docking station accommodates RDX removable disk cartridges of any capacity. The disk is in a protective rugged cartridge enclosure that plugs into the docking station. The docking station holds one removable rugged disk drive/cartridge at a time. The rugged removable disk cartridge and docking station performs saves, restores, and backups similar to tape drive. This docking station can be an excellent entry capacity/performance option. Functionally, this docking station is identical to the feature EU03 and EU04 RDX USB docking stations introduced on POWER7 servers.
Internal USB cables in the enclosure connect the RDX docking to internal USB connections in the server. The internal cables are included with feature EUA3 and are not ordered separately. Due to the internal USB connections, the two USB ports on the rear of the server are removed. The USB port at the front of the server remains available for client use.
Power S822 IBM i enhancement
The Power S822 server is enhanced for IBM i with firmware 860.10 to allow up to four cores per IBM i partition. With earlier firmware levels, the maximum is two cores per IBM i partition. Multiple IBM i partitions can be created and run concurrently, and each individual partition can now have up to four cores. No hardware features are required for this enhancement. The server remains at an IBM i P10 software tier.
EXP24SX SAS Storage Enclosure (#ESLS, #ELLS)
The new EXP24SX is a storage expansion enclosure with twenty-four 2.5-inch SFF SAS bays. It supports up to 24 hot-swap HDDs or SSDs in only 2 EIA of space in a 19-inch rack. The EXP24SX SFF bays use SFF Gen2 (SFF-2) carriers or trays identical to the carrier or trays in the previous EXP24S drawer.
The EXP24SX Drawer feature ESLS is supported on the Power S814, S822, S824, E850C, E870C, E870, E880C, and E880 servers by AIX, IBM i, Linux, and VIOS. The EXP24SX Drawer feature ELLS is supported on the Linux-only Power S812L, S822L, and S824L servers. Firmware 860, or later, is required.
With AIX/Linux/VIOS, the EXP24SX can be ordered with four sets of 6 bays (mode 4), two sets of 12 bays (mode 2), or one set of 24 bays (mode 1). With IBM i, only one set of 24 bays (mode 1) is supported. It is possible to change the mode setting in the field using software commands along with a specifically documented procedure. The predecessor EXP24S did not support this mode change in the field.
Important: When changing modes, it is very important that a skilled, technically qualified person follow the special documented procedures. Improperly changing modes can potentially destroy existing RAID sets, prevent access to existing data, or allow other partitions to access another partition's existing data. Hire an expert to assist if you are not familiar with this type of reconfiguration work.
Four mini-SAS HD narrow ports on the EXP24SX are attached to PCIe Gen3 SAS adapters or attached to an integrated SAS controller in a POWER8 scale-out server such as the Power S814, S822, or S824 servers. The following PCIe3 SAS adapters support the EXP24SX:
- PCIe3 RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ0J or #EJ0M or #EL3B or #EL59)
- PCIe3 12 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ0L)
- PCIe3 12 GB Cache RAID Plus SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ14)
Earlier generation PCIe2 or PCIe1 SAS adapters are not supported with the EXP24SX.
The attachment between the EXP24SX and the PCIe3 SAS adapters or integrated SAS controllers is through SAS YO12 or X12 cables. X12 and YO12 cables are designed to support up to 12 Gb SAS. The PCIe Gen3 SAS adapters support up to 6 Gb throughput. The EXP24SX has been designed to support up to 12 Gb throughput if future SAS adapters support that capability. All ends of the YO12 and X12 cables have mini-SAS HD narrow connectors. 4Q2016 cable options are:
- X12 cable: 3-meter copper (#ECDJ)
- YO12 cables: 1.5-meter copper (#ECDT), 3-meter copper (#ECDU)
Not attached to the EXP24SX is a new AA12 cable interconnecting a pair of PCIe3 12GB adapters (two #EJ14 or two #EJ0L). These higher-bandwidth cables could support 12 Gb throughput if future adapters support that capability. Copper feature ECE0 is 0.6 meters long and ECE3 is 3 meters long.
One no-charge specify code is used with each EXP24SX I/O Drawer (#ESLS/#ELLS) to communicate to IBM configurator tools and IBM Manufacturing which mode setting, adapter, and SAS cable are needed. With this specify code, no hardware is shipped. The physical adapters, controllers, and cables must be ordered with their own chargeable feature numbers. There are more technically supported configurations than represented by these specify codes. IBM Manufacturing and IBM configurator tools such as e-config only understand and support EXP24SX configurations represented by these specify codes.

An EXP24SX Drawer in mode 4 can be attached to two or four SAS controllers and provide a great deal of configuration flexibility. For example, if using unpaired feature EJ0J adapters, these EJ0J adapters could be in the same server in the same partition, same server in different partitions, or even different servers.
An EXP24SX in mode 2 has similar flexibility. If the I/O drawer is in Mode 2, then half of its SAS bays can be controlled by one pair of PCIe3 SAS adapters, such as a 12 GB write cache adapter pair (#EJ14), and the other half can be controlled by a different PCIe3 SAS 12 GB write cache adapter pair or by zero-write-cache PCIe3 SAS adapters.
Note that for simplicity, IBM configurator tools such as e-config assume that the SAS bays of an individual I/O drawer are controlled by one type of SAS adapter. As a client, you have more flexibility than e-config understands.
A maximum of twenty-four 2.5-inch SSDs or 2.5-inch HDDs is supported in the EXP24SX 24 SAS bays. There can be no mixing of HDDs and SSDs in the same mode-1 drawer. HDDs and SSDs can be mixed in a mode-2 or mode-4 drawer, but they cannot be mixed within a logical split of the drawer. For example, in a mode-2 drawer with two sets of 12 bays, one set could hold SSDs and one set could hold HDDs, but you cannot mix SSDs and HDDs in the same set of 12 bays.
The indicator feature EHS2 helps IBM Manufacturing understand where SSDs are placed in a mode 2 or a mode 4 EXP24SX. On one mode-2 drawer, use a quantity of one feature EHS2 to have SSDs placed in just half the bays and use two EHS2 features to have SSDs placed in any of the bays. Similarly, on one mode-4 drawer, use a quantity of one, two, three, or four EHS2 features to indicate how many bays can have SSDs. With multiple EXP24SX orders IBM Manufacturing will have to guess which quantity of ESH2 is associated with each EXP24SX. Consider using CSP (#0456) to reduce guessing.
Two and a half inch small form factor (SFF) SAS HDDs and SSDs are supported in the EXP24SX. All drives are mounted on Gen2 carriers/trays and thus named SFF-2 drives. The SFF-2 drives, which are supported on both the existing EXP24S and the newer EXP24SX, are interchangeable. Only 4k byte sector drives are supported in the EXP24SX in fourth quarter 2016. The 5xx byte sector drives are not announced in fourth quarter 2016.

The EXP24S and EXP24SX can be mixed on the same server and on the same PCIe3 adapter, but IBM Manufacturing will only build orders that are not mixed unless CSP (#0456) is used. e-config will reflect this per-order limitation. EXP24S, EXP24SX, and EXP12SX can be mixed on the same server. EXP24SX and EXP12SX can be mixed on the same PCIe3 adapter.
The EXP24SX Drawer has many high-reliability design points. The SAS drive bays support hot swap. It has redundant and hot-swap-capable power and fan assemblies. It has dual line cords. It has redundant and hot-swap enclosure service modules (ESMs). It has redundant data paths to all drives. LED indicators on drives, bays, ESMs, and power supplies support problem identification. Plus through the SAS adapters/controllers, drives can be protected with RAID and mirroring and hot-spare capability.
Order two ESLA features for AC power supplies. The enclosure is shipped with adjustable depth rails and can accommodate 19-inch rack depths from 59.5 cm - 75 cm (23.4 in. - 29.5 in.). Slot filler panels are provided for empty bays when initially shipped from IBM.

EXP12SX SAS Storage Enclosure (#ESLL and #ELLL)
The new EXP12SX is a storage expansion enclosure with twelve 3.5-inch LFF SAS bays. It supports up to 12 hot-swap HDDs in only 2 EIA of space in a 19-inch rack. The EXP12SX SFF bays use LFF Gen1 (LFF-1) carriers/trays. The 4k byte sector drives (#4096 or #4224) are supported. SSDs are not supported.
The EXP12SX Drawer feature ESLL is supported on the Power S814, S822, S824, E850C, E870C, E870, E880C, and E880 servers by AIX, Linux, and VIOS. The EXP24SX Drawer feature ELLL is supported on the Linux-only Power S812L, S822L and S824L servers. Firmware 860, or later, is required.
With AIX/Linux/VIOS, the EXP12SX enclosure can be ordered with four sets of 3 bays (Mode 4), two sets of 6 bays (Mode 2), or one set of 12 bays (Mode 1). The mode setting can be changed in the field using software commands along with a specifically documented procedure.
Important: When changing modes, it is very important that you follow the documented procedures. Improperly changing modes can potentially destroy existing RAID sets, prevent access to existing data, or allow other partitions to access another partition's existing data. Hire an expert to assist if you are not familiar with this type of reconfiguration work.
Four mini-SAS HD narrow ports on the EXP12SX are attached to PCIe Gen3 SAS adapters or attached to an integrated SAS controller in a POWER8 scale-out server such as the Power S814, S822, or S824 server. The following PCIe3 SAS adapters support the EXP12SX:
- PCIe3 RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ0J or #EJ0M or #EL3B or #EL59)
- PCIe3 12 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ0L)
- PCIe3 12 GB Cache RAID Plus SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ14)
Earlier generation PCIe2 or PCIe1 SAS adapters are not supported with the EXP12SX.
The attachment between the EXP12SX and the PCIe3 SAS adapters or integrated SAS controllers is through SAS YO12 or X12 cables. X12 and YO12 cables are designed to support up to 12 Gb. The PCIe Gen3 SAS adapters support up to 6 Gb throughput. The EXP12SX has been designed to support up to 12 Gb throughput if future SAS adapters support that capability. All ends of the YO12 and X12 cables have mini-SAS HD narrow connectors. Fourth quarter 2016 options are:
- X12 cable: 3-meter copper (#ECDJ)
- YO12 cables: 1.5-meter copper (#ECDT), 3-meter copper (#ECDU)
Not attached to the EXP12SX is a new AA12 cable interconnecting a pair of PCIe3 12GB adapters (two #EJ14 or two #EJ0L). These higher-bandwidth cables could support 12 Gb throughput if future adapters support that capability. Copper features ECE0 is 0.6-meter long and ECE3 is 3-meter long.
One no-charge specify code is used with each EXP12SX I/O Drawer (#ELLL/#ESLL) to communicate to IBM configurator tools and IBM Manufacturing which mode setting, adapter, and SAS cable are needed. With this specify code, no hardware is shipped. The physical adapters, controllers, and cables must be ordered with their own chargeable feature numbers. There are more technically supported configurations than represented by these specify codes. IBM Manufacturing and IBM configurator tools such as e-config only understand and support EXP12SX configurations represented by these specify codes.

#EJVS | Mode 2 | Two #EJ0L (one pair) | 2 X12 cable | AIX/Linux/VIOS |
All of the above EXP12SX specify codes assume a full set of adapters and cables able to run all the SAS bays configured. The following specify codes communicate to IBM Manufacturing a lower cost, "partial" configuration is to be configured where the ordered adapters and cables can run only a portion of the SAS bays. The future MES addition of adapters and cables can enable the remaining SAS bays for growth. The following specify codes are used:
Specify | Mode | Adapter/Controller | Cable to Drw | Environment |

#EJVT (1/2 of #EJVS) | Mode 2 | Two #EJ0L (one pair) | 1 X12 cable | AIX/Linux/VIOS |
An EXP12SX Drawer in mode 4 can be attached to two or four SAS controllers and provide a great deal of configuration flexibility. For example, if using unpaired feature EJ0J adapters, these EJ0J adapters could be in the same server in the same partition, same server in different partitions, or even different servers.
An EXP12SX in mode 2 has similar flexibility.
The 3.5-inch large form factor (LFF) SAS HDDs are supported in the EXP24SX. All drives are mounted on Gen1 carriers/trays and thus named LFF-1 drives. Only 4k byte sector drives are supported in the EXP24SX. The 5xx byte sector drives are not announced or planned. Drives are 7200 rpm and sometimes referred to as nearline. These drives provide excellent cost per gigabyte. Note that formatting or rebuilding arrays on large disk drives can take hours. If higher performance is required, consider higher rpm disks or SSDs in the EXP24SX.
EXP12SX drives for feature ESLL (multi-OS) are the 3.86 TB/4.0 TB 4k 7200 RPM (#ES62) and 7.72 TB/8.0 TB 4k 7200 RPM (#ES64) drives. Drives for feature ELLL (Linux-only) are the 3.86 TB/4.0 TB 4k 7200 RPM (#EL62) and the 7.72 TB/8.0 TB 4k 7200 RPM (#EL64) drives.
The EXP24S and EXP24SX drives can be mixed on the same server and on the same PCIe3 adapter, but IBM Manufacturing will only build orders that are not mixed unless CSP (#0456) is used. e-config will reflect this per-order limitation.
The EXP12SX Drawer has many high-reliability design points. The SAS bays support hot swap. It has redundant and hot-swap power and fan assemblies. It has dual line cords. It has redundant and hot-swap ESMs.
EXP24S, EXP24SX, and EXP12SX drives can be mixed on the same server. EXP24SX and EXP12SX drives can be mixed on the same PCIe3 adapter.

IBM PCIe3 Crypto Coprocessor 4767 (#EJ32/#EJ33)
This secure-key adapter provides both cryptographic coprocessor and cryptographic accelerator functions in a single PCIe card. The adapter is well suited to applications that require high-speed, security-sensitivity, RSA acceleration, cryptographic operations for data encryption and digital signing, secure management, and use of cryptographic keys or custom cryptographic applications. It provides secure storage of cryptographic keys in a tamper-resistant hardware security module designed to meet FIPS 140-2 level 4 security requirements. The adapter is a PCIe Gen1 x4 full-height short card. The adapter runs in dedicated mode only (no PowerVM virtualization).
Features EJ32 and EJ33 represent the same physical card with the same CCIN of 4767. Different feature numbers are used to indicate if a blind-swap cassette is used and its type. Feature EJ32 indicates no blind-swap cassette. Feature EJ33 indicates a Gen3 blind-swap cassette.
PCIe Cryptographic Coprocessor 4767 builds on the solid base of the previous generation crypto adapter (#EJ27, #EJ28, #EJ29). It offers all the existing adapter's capabilities and more. Adapter highlights:
- Binary compatibility with applications written to use previous generation cards.
- Significantly increased performance compared to the previous generation.
- Hardware-accelerated Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) key generation, along with digital signature generation and verification using the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA).
- Enhanced firmware load security using ECDSA signatures.
- New financial services support verbs for Visa Data Secure Platform with Point to Point Encryption (VDSP with P2PE), which includes Visa Format-Preserving Encryption (FPE).
- Access-control tracking can be performed on a role ID basis to gather information about which access control points are queried by applications.
- Users of the HSM 4767 have enhanced logon control capabilities, including stricter passphrase length and character requirements and the ability for users to change their own passphrases.
- The ability to encipher and decipher data using the AES algorithm in Galois/Counter Mode (GCM).
- The creation of symmetric key material from a pair of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) keys using the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) protocol and the ANSI-9.63-KDF key derivation method as specified in ANSI X9.63-2011.
- Newly selectable RSA public exponents 5, 17, and 257. This addition completes the series of the first five Fermat numbers. The first five Fermat numbers are known to be prime.
Feature EJ32 is supported in the Power S824L, S814, S824, and E850 servers, and feature EJ33 is supported in the Power S812L, S822L, S824L, S822, S814, S824, E880C, E880, E870C, E870, and E850 servers.

PCIe3 2-Port 100 GbE (NIC and RoCE) QSFP28 Adapter x16 (#EC3M / #EC3L)
A high-performance 100 Gb Ethernet adapter offering both NIC and RoCE in a PCIe Gen3 Ethernet x16 adapter provides two 100 Gb QSFP28 ports. The adapter supports both NIC and IBTA RoCE standards. RoCE is Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet. Using RoCE, the adapter can support significantly greater bandwidth with low latency and minimize CPU overhead by more efficiently using memory access. This offloads the CPU from I/O networking tasks, improving performance and scalability.
IBM offers either passive copper twinax cables up to 2 meter in length or active optical cables up to 100 meters in length. See features EB5J - EB5M for a 0.5M, 1.0M, 1.5M, and 2.0M copper cable. See features EB5R - EB5Y for a 3M, 5M, 10M, 15M, 20M, 30M, 50M, or 100M active optical cable. Transceivers are included on each end of these QSFP28 cables. As an alternative to these supported cables, you may choose to order an IBM qualified and supported QSFP28 optical transceiver (#EB59) to put into the adapter and provide your own 100GE optical cabling with your own QSP28 optical transceiver for the other end.
Either one or both of the adapter's two QSP28 ports can be populated. When two ports are filled, both can have copper cables, both can have optical cables, or one can be copper and one can be optical.
Features EC3L and EC3M have identical electronics and function and CCIN (2CEC), but have different tail stock brackets. Feature EC3L is low profile and feature EC3M is full high. The adapter is based on a Mellanox ConnectX-4 adapter.
Feature EC3M is supported in the Power S824L, S814, S824, and E850C servers, and feature EC3L is supported in the Power S821L, S822L, S822, E880C, E880, E870C, and E870 servers.

PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer Cabling Option
A new copper cabling option (#ECCS) is available for the scale-out servers and for the Power E850 server. The cable option offers a much lower-cost connection between the server and the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer fanout modules. The currently available Active Optical cable (AOC) offers much longer length cables, providing rack placement flexibility. Plus AOC cables are much thinner and have tighter bend radius and thus are much easier to cable in the rack.
The 3M Copper CXP Cable Pair (#ECCS) has the same performance and same reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) characteristics as the AOC cables. The cable is similar in thickness and stiffness to the cabling used between a POWER7 server and a PCIe Gen1 I/O drawer. One copper cable length of 3 m is offered. Note that the cable management arm of the scale-out and E850 servers requires about 1 m of cable.
Like the AOC cable pair, the copper pair is cabled in the same manner. One cable attaches to the top CXP port in the PCIe adapter in the x16 PCIe slot in the server system unit and then attaches to the top CXP port in the fanout module in the I/O drawer. Its cable pair attaches to the bottom CXP port of the same PCIe adapter and to the bottom CXP port of the same fanout module. Note that the PCIe adapter providing the CXP ports on the server was named a PCIe3 "Optical" Cable Adapter. In hindsight, this naming was unfortunate as the adapter's CXP ports are not unique to optical. But at the time, optical cables were the only connection option planned.
Copper and AOC cabling can be mixed on the same server. However, they cannot be mixed on the same PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer or mixed on the same fanout module.
Copper cables have the same operating system software prerequisites as AOC cables but require Firmware 860, or later.
PCIe2 2-Port 8 Gb Fibre Channel Adapter
The PCIe2 2-Port 8 Gb Fibre Channel Adapter (#EL5Y/#EL5Z) offers the same functionality as the existing PCIe 2-Port 8 Gb Fibre Channel Adapter (#EN0F/#EN0G) but at a lower price for Linux-only servers. See the IBM System Storage® Interoperation Center (SSIC) website for supported combinations.

High-Function (Switched and Monitored) PDUs
New PDUs (power distribution units) provide switching, better monitoring, and 50% more C19 receptacles than current Power System PDUs. Depending on country wiring standards either two or four full-price feature codes are orderable.
208 V 3-phase delta | 200 V - 240 V 1-phase or 3-phase wye | |
---|---|---|
12 x C13 | #EPTQ | #EPTN |
9 x C19 | #EPTL | #EPTJ |
These PDUs can be mounted vertically in rack-side pockets or they can be mounted horizontally. If mounted horizontally, they each use 1 EIA (1U) of rack space. See feature EPTH for horizontal mounting hardware, which is used when IBM Manufacturing doesn't automatically factory-install the PDU. Two RJ45 ports on the front of the PDU enable the client to monitor each receptacle's electrical power usage and to remotely switch any receptacle on or off. The PDU is shipped with a generic PDU password, and IBM strongly urges clients to change it upon installation. The new PDUs described above do provide the same low price as the low-function 12xC13 PDU feature (#7188).
High-Function 9xC19 PDU: Switched, Monitoring feature (#EPTJ/#EPTG) provides an intelligent, switched 200-240 volt AC PDU with nine C19 receptacles on the front of the PDU. The PDU is mounted on the rear of the rack, making the nine C19 receptacles easily accessible. Each receptacle has a 20 amp circuit breaker. Depending on country wiring standards, the PDU is single-phase or three-phase wye. See three-phase features EPTK and EPTL for countries that do not use wye wiring.
Features EPTG and EPTJ are identical PDUs. Up to one lower-priced feature EPTG can be ordered with a 7014-T42/T00 rack in place of a no-charge feature (#9188) PDU. Device power cords with a C20 plug connect to C19 PDU receptacles and are ordered separately. One country-specific wall line cord is also ordered separately and attaches to a UTG524-7 connector on the front of the PDU. Supported line cords include features 6489, 6491, 6492, 6653, 6654, 6655, 6656, 6657, 6658, and 6667. There are also three C13 receptacles on the front of the PDU positioned toward the middle of the rack. These are generally not easily accessed and therefore IBM does not generally recommend their use.
High-Function 9xC19 PDU 3-Phase: Switched, Monitoring feature (#EPTL/#EPTK) provides an intelligent, switched 208 volt 3-phase AC delta PDU with nine C19 receptacles on the front of the PDU. The PDU is mounted on the rear of the rack, making the nine C19 receptacles easily accessible. Each receptacle has a 20 amp circuit breaker.
Features EPTK and EPTL are identical PDUs. Up to one lower-priced feature EPTK can be ordered with a 7014-T42/T00 rack in place of a no-charge feature (#9188) PDU. Device power cords with a C20 plug connect to C19 PDU receptacles and are ordered separately. One wall line cord is provided with the PDU (no separate feature number) and has a IEC60309 60A plug (3P+G). The PDU supports up to 48 amps. There are also three C13 receptacles on the front of the PDU positioned toward the middle of the rack. These are generally not easily accessed and therefore IBM does not generally recommend their use.
High-Function 12xC13 PDU: Switched, Monitoring feature (#EPTN/#EPTM) provides an intelligent, switched 200 - 240 V AC PDU with twelve C13 receptacles on the front of the PDU. The PDU is mounted on the rear of the rack, making the twelve C13 receptacles easily accessible. Each receptacle has a 20 amp circuit breaker. Depending on country wiring standards, the PDU is single-phase or three-phase wye. See three-phase features EPTK and EPTL for countries that do not use wye wiring.
Features EPTM and EPTN are identical PDUs. Up to one lower-priced feature EPTM can be ordered with a 7014-T42/T00 rack in place of a no-charge feature (#9188) PDU. Device power cords with a C14 plug connect to C13 PDU receptacles and are ordered separately. One country-specific wall line cord is also ordered separately and attaches to a UTG524-7 connector on the front of the PDU. Supported line cords include features 6489, 6491, 6492, 6653, 6654, 6655, 6656, 6657, 6658, and 6667.
High-Function 12xC13 PDU 3-Phase: Switched, Monitoring feature (#EPTQ/#EPTP) provides an intelligent, switched 208 volt 3-phase AC delta PDU with twelve C13 receptacles on the front of the PDU. The PDU is mounted on the rear of the rack, making the twelve C13 receptacles easily accessible. Each receptacle has a 20 amp circuit breaker.
Features EPTP and EPTQ are identical PDUs. Up to one lower-price feature EPTQ can be ordered with a 7014-T42/T00 rack in place of a no-charge feature (#9188) PDU. Device power cords with a C14 plug connect to C13 PDU receptacles and are ordered separately. One wall line cord is provided with the PDU (no separate feature number) and has a IEC60309 60A plug (3P+G). The PDU supports up to 48 amps.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
To learn how Electronic Services can work for you, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.

This feature assumes the same warranty or maintenance terms as the machine in which they are installed for the full warranty or maintenance period announced for such machine.
PCIe NVMe Flash Adapters have a maximum number of write cycles. PCIe NVMe Flash device failures will be replaced during the standard warranty period for the attached server at IBM's expense regardless of usage levels. IBM Maintenance Agreements after the warranty period are limited to devices that have not reached the maximum number of write cycles. Devices that reach this limit may fail to operate according to specifications and must be replaced at client's expense. Individual service life may vary and can be monitored using an OS command.
