Description |
IBM Case Foundation V5.2, formerly known as IBM FileNet Business Process Manager, updates
Reduced total cost of ownership with unified content and process engines
Process Engine now runs on Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) - The Process Engine has been combined with the Content Engine so that both now run in the same Java virtual machine (JVM) within a JEE server. The new engine is called the Content Platform Engine. Detailed tuning recommendations for the Content Platform Engine will be available under the technical notices on the support site.
Update function examples:
- A site will no longer need to maintain two different methods for load balancing. The Process Engine had its own load balancing method as did Content Engine. For Case Foundation V5.2, the method used for the new Content Platform Engine will be consistently used moving forward and is identical to the Content Engine method.
- A single installation procedure installs the new Content Platform Engine. There is no need to install separate process clients, content clients, or process engine.
- The dedicated Process Engine servers from prior releases may be decommissioned or repurposed.
Content Platform Engine services multiple databases - In previous releases, a Process Engine could only service a single database. If multiple databases were required, multiple Process Engine instances were required. In IBM Case Foundation V5.2, a single Content Platform Engine can service multiple databases. Additionally, multiple Content Platform Engines may reside on a single server servicing databases in one or more IBM FileNet P8 domains.
Component Manager service now included in Content Platform Engine - In previous releases, the Component Manager was installed and run from the Application Engine. In Case Foundation V5.2, the Component Manager now runs as a service within the Content Platform Engine. All IBM components, such as CE_Operations and WSRequest, are now serviced by the integrated Content Platform Engine. If you have custom components, you may either run them separately from the Application Engine as before or can easily bring them into the new integrated environment of Case Foundation V5.2 via the Process Configuration Console. High availability and load balancing are all inherited from the Content Platform Engine.
Support for database sharing via schema
Previously, each new content and process repository required its own database. Content and process repositories may now be defined within a user specified database schema. This provides consistency for content and process repository, and allows scaling and application isolation while reducing the number of physical databases to be administered with the solution.
Expanded flexibility and cost savings - IBM Case Monitor and IBM Case Analyzer
Case Monitor and Case Analyzer data mart (RDBMS) service now runs in Content Platform Engine - Previously, the Case Monitor Analyzer publishing server was installed and run on its own server using its own high availability mechanism. In Case Foundation V5.2, the service is installed and integrated into the Content Platform Engine. This reduces the number of installations and servers required for the platform. High availability and load balancing are leveraged from the Content Platform Engine.
Support for multiple data mart databases - Previous versions of Case Monitor and Case Analyzer required installing a dedicated server instance for each separate data mart database. In Case Foundation V5.2, a single data mart publishing service can service multiple data mart databases.
Support for Linux, UNIX, IBM DB2®, and Oracle - To deliver platform flexibility, the Case Analyzer publishing service now publishes to DB2 and Oracle databases in addition to Microsoft SQL Server from Linux and UNIX platforms, as well as Microsoft Windows Server platforms.
Note: If you are using Case Analyzer OLAP processing capability, you still have to install Microsoft SQL Server.
Additional Case Monitor functions - Additional displays are available showing operational summary like output and productivity over a time period. Case Monitor can now present historical process data in addition to in flight process data in the Case Monitor dashboard. Historical data may be collected for a recent time period such as weekly summary for the last month or the last quarter.
Enterprise manageability improvements with simplified administration
Unified Content Engine and Process Engine installer program - Installation of the Content Platform Engine is performed with a single installation and single ear file. This greatly simplifies and reduces the number of installations required for the IBM FileNet P8 platform.
Unified Content Engine and Process Engine initial software configuration and deployment tool for JEE application server (CMUI) - CMUI is the only tool needed for the configuration and deployment of the unified Content Platform Engine for JEE application server.
Unified Content Engine and Process Engine server up and running administration console - The administration console for Content Platform Engine, formerly known as the administration console for Content Engine, now supports up and running configuration for process and Case Analyzer data mart publishing service in addition to full content administration capability.
FileNet Business Process Manager components withdrawn from IBM Case Foundation
IBM Business Process Framework component has been withdrawn from the IBM Case Foundation V5.2 bundle. For the withdrawal of service for IBM Business Process Framework, refer to Withdrawal Announcement WP13-0012, dated March 12, 2013.

Charge metrics definitions
The subject programs have a new structure for licensing and pricing designed for clarity, simplicity, and unity with other products in the IBM Enterprise Content Management portfolio. The former approach relied upon licensing servers and users -- with users licensed on a Named, Concurrent, e-business, Employee, and External basis. This has been replaced with a new approach based on Value Units (VUs), with a primary focus on user access.
Value Unit (VU): VU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. VU Value Unit entitlements are based on the quantity of a specific designated measurement, either users or resources, for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of VU Value Units required for your environment as defined by the specific program terms. The VU Value Unit entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with VU Value Unit entitlements of another program. To understand these benefits of VU Value Unit licensing, and to determine how many VU Value Units to obtain for the program, contact your IBM representative.
IBM Case Foundation is available in one the following User Value Units (UVU):
- Authorized User Value Unit (AUVU): For selective licensing of users who are internal to the organization.
- Employee User Value Unit (EUVU): For collectively licensing all employees and agents who act on behalf of the organization.
- External User Value Unit (XUVU): For licensing of users who are external to the organization.
- Authorized User: An individual (named or unnamed) within or outside of the customer enterprise permitted to access the ECM software and components in any manner directly or indirectly through any means.
- Starter Pack User Value Unit (SP AUVU): For selective licensing of users who are internal to the organization per parameters set forth in the SP AUVU license conversion table and subject to additional restrictions.
Employee User: All employees of the company/subsidiary must be licensed, even if only a subset of the employees are actual users. Agents and contractors, acting on behalf of the customer, count as employees. At all times, both the number of Employee UVU entitlements and the number of Add-On Employee UVU entitlements must meet or exceed the total employee headcount of the customer enterprise. EUVU cannot be mixed with AUVU for the same product.
External User: External users are generally the customer's customers who will need infrequent, read-only access to the program. License may only be used by persons who are not employees, agents, or contractors of the customer affiliates or subsidiaries.
Add-On User License: Grants user access to incremental product capability in IBM Case Manager, given that user is already licensed for the appropriate base functionality (for example, IBM FileNet Content Manager, IBM FileNet Content Manager Starter Pack, IBM Content Manager, and IBM Content Manager Starter Pack).
Starter Pack User
The following restrictions apply:
- You may not use an IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack with a repository that at any time shares an object store and a configuration database with another repository.
- You may only use an IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack in conjunction with one repository.
- You may use an IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On in conjunction with up to two of the following repositories: IBM FileNet Content Manager, IBM FileNet Content Manager Starter Pack, IBM Content Manager, or IBM Content Manager Starter Pack.
- The maximum number of SP AUVUs that the licensee may use in conjunction with a given ECM Starter Pack, including IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack and IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On, at any time is 790 (the maximum Case Foundation Starter Pack utilization level).
Trade-up license means an entitlement that enables a licensee to exchange a license of one IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack to a license of the IBM Case Foundation program product at a specific price; a licensee may exchange a license of one IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On to a license of the IBM Case Foundation Add-On program product at a specific price. Once a trade-up license is obtained with respect to a given Case Foundation Starter Pack or Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On, the IBM Case Foundation program license that the licensee receives replaces the licensee's original entitlement to the Case Foundation Starter Pack or Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On and the licensee has no further right to use the Starter Pack.
For each Authorized User accessing the Case Foundation Starter Pack or Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On (collectively as Starter Pack), licensee must have the number of AUVU entitlements set forth in the IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack or IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On Authorized User Value Unit license conversion table that corresponds to the number of Authorized Users accessing the Starter Pack at any time. At no time may the number of Authorized Users accessing the Starter Pack or any component of the Starter Pack in any manner, directly or indirectly or through any other means, exceed licensee's entitlement to use the Starter Pack, as indicated on the applicable PoE.
In the event licensee reaches the maximum SP utilization level with respect to a given IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack or IBM Case Foundation Starter Pack Add-On, if licensee wishes to increase their entitlement to use the Starter Pack, licensee must contact an IBM representative or an IBM Business Partner to purchase a trade-up license at the then-current rates for such license. Additional charges, such as the cost of the additional licenses, will also apply.
Product pricing
Each product has a fixed price per UVU. Customers license the appropriate number of UVUs to provide access to a corresponding user population.
Cumulative volume discounting
As the user quantity increases, the number of UVUs increase albeit at a slower rate. Value Unit license conversion tables establish the required number of UVUs for a specified number of users. Volume discounting examples:
- 100 authorized users require 85 AUVUs.
- 1,000 authorized users require 600 AUVUs.
- 5,000 authorized users require 2,500 AUVUs.
Content Manager configuration example:
- Content Manager AUVU price = $Y per AUVU
- 5,000 authorized users require 2,500 AUVUs
- Total price = $Y x 2,500

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

For clarification, note that if for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
