IBM® is the first vendor to complete Java™ EE 8 compatibility certification. WebSphere® Application Server Liberty Continuous Delivery Release delivers the latest Java EE 8 technologies to millions of Java developers worldwide. It brings together Java EE 8 and the latest MicroProfile technologies to provide a robust foundation for customers who want to build cloud-native applications.

This release also adds IBM support for Spring Boot applications, providing the tools to help Spring Boot developers deploy their Spring applications into Docker containers using WebSphere Application Server Liberty. This provides both flexibility and deployment optimization for operations teams to manage WebSphere Java EE and Spring Boot application deployments, while allowing developers to work with either the Spring or Java EE and MicroProfile frameworks.

Top rule

IBM WebSphere Application Server Liberty (built on the Open Liberty open source project) is a lightweight, composable, fast-starting platform that is optimized for modern application workloads. It is designed for enhanced developer productivity, high-scale and resilient production deployments, and simple integration into modern DevOps workflows. WebSphere Application Server Liberty, now certified to the Java EE 8 specifications, delivers the latest in Java standards and supports their deployment across the widest spectrum of cloud environments and container-virtualization technologies, including IBM Cloud™ Private and IBM Cloud Public.

Java EE 8 continues to improve API and programming models needed for today's applications and adds features that are desired by the worldwide community. This release modernizes support for many industry standards and continues simplification of enterprise-ready APIs.

Enhancements include:

  • HTTP/2 support in Java Servlet to extend server capabilities
  • JavaScript™ Object Notation Binding (JSON-B) that provides a binding layer for converting Java objects to and from JSON messages
  • Java API for RESTful Web Services (JAX-RS) 2.1 reactive client API
  • JAX-RS support for server-sent events, offering a one-way channel from a server to a client
  • Java EE Security API that supports cloud and PaaS paradigms
  • Bean Validation 2.0 leverages Java 8 language constructs for use in validation and enables expression of constraints on object models using annotations
  • JavaServer Faces 2.3 for building server-side user interfaces
  • Contexts and Dependency Injection (CDI) 2.0, emphasizing asynchronous events

These enhancements further advance enterprise Java as the language for building modern, secure, robust web and RESTful applications. Java EE 8 prepares enterprise Java for the next evolution in cloud-native Java applications with reactive programming styles and simplified configuration through annotations.

Support for MicroProfile 1.3 specification

WebSphere Application Server Liberty also includes support for the latest MicroProfile 1.3 specifications. MicroProfile provides a baseline platform definition for Microservices and delivers a mechanism to accelerate adoption of Java EE 8. WebSphere Application Server Liberty support for the MicroProfile specification includes CDI, JSON, JAX-RS, configuration API, Health, Metrics, OpenAPI, Rest Client, JSON Web Token (JWT) propagation, Fault Tolerance, and Open Tracing to help develop and deploy microservices efficiently. The MicroProfile programming model brings a pragmatic, standard approach to building Java microservices that integrate with modern application platforms such as Kubernetes.

Expanded support for Spring Boot applications

WebSphere Application Server Liberty has also added two new capabilities to support Spring Boot applications:

  • Direct deployment of Spring Boot Java archive files (JARs)
  • Tools to create optimal Docker images for Spring Boot applications

Spring Boot application JARs can now be directly deployed to WebSphere Liberty without the need to repackage those applications as web archives (WARs). Both Spring Boot 1.5 and 2.0 application JARs are supported. This makes it easier for operations teams to support Spring Boot developers by not forcing the developers to change their development behavior. This delivers benefits to operations teams as they are able to keep their infrastructure up to date without developers having to rebuild their apps.

Additionally, new tools have been added that help Spring Boot applications gain efficiencies in Docker by optimally layering the Docker image. IBM is providing the first supported path to allow Spring applications to take advantage of the inherent layering that containers provide. These new tools enable developers to split the Spring Boot JAR content and separate the application code from the Spring Boot and third-party libraries. This allows updates to the application to be placed in an independent layer from the Spring Boot dependencies, enabling the rapidly changing application to be updated quickly and making continuous delivery pipelines faster and more efficient.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
