4-Core Processor Feature
For clients that need fewer than six or eight processor cores in the single-socket IBM Power System S814 server, a new 4-Core 3.02 GHz POWER8 Processor Card (#EPXK) is available. There is no upgrade to increase the cores on this feature. This server supports AIX, IBM i, and Linux, but is especially attractive to IBM i clients with its P05 software tier. It is designed to meet many entry client requirements with its 64 GB memory maximum, eight SAS drives in its system unit maximum, and seven PCIe slots maximum. The IBM i Solution Edition (#4928) and Capacity Backup option for IBM i (#0444) are supported.
Scale-out async adapters
IBM is adding support of the existing 4-port Async PCIe adapter (#5277 and #5785) to the scale-out servers for AIX® and Linux™. Plus IBM is making the existing 2-port communications PCIe adapter (#2893 and #2894) orderable for IBM i on scale-out servers These adapters replace the originally announced 2-port Async PCIe adapter (#5289 and #5290), which will not be supported on scale-out servers.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Graphics Adapter
IBM is introducing a new 3D graphics adapter (low-profile #EC41 and full-height #EC42) on selected IBM POWER7+™ and POWER8™ servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, or later.
Solid-state drives for EXP30 Ultra Drawer
The EXP30 Ultra Drawer (#EDR1) is updated with third-generation eMLC 1.8-inch SSD. A 387 GB solid-state drive for AIX/Linux (#ES0J) and for IBM i (#ES0K) and an attractively priced six-pack feature ESRJ for AIX/Linux and feature ESRK for IBM i are available for these POWER7+ servers:
- Power® 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780
- PowerLinux™ 7R1, 7R2, and 7R4
The feature ES0J and ES0K SSD were announced earlier for the scale-out servers' system unit, but in the EXP30 drawer replace the previously available eMLC feature ES02/ES04/EL34 and ESR2/ESR4 SSD in new proposals. The existing 1.8-inch SSD and new 1.8-inch SSD can be intermixed in the same EXP30 Ultra drawer. When placed in an EXP30 Ultra Drawer, one new EXP30 Carrier (#EB2W) is used with each feature ES0J and ES0K. Six features EB2W are required for each six-pack feature ESRJ or feature ESRK.
Clients running IBM i can now specify the 387 GB 1.8-inch SSD as a load source (#ELSK).
Additional SFF-1 to SFF-2 conversions
IBM provides additional configuration flexibility by allowing existing SAS drives installed in POWER7® and POWER7+ system units or in the feature 5802/EL36 I/O drawer to be converted to drives that fit in the feature 5887/EL1S EXP24S storage drawer. The conversion provides a different carrier or tray onto which the client can move existing disk or SSD and changes the SFF-1 feature code to a SFF-2 EXP24S-based feature code. A number of conversions were announced earlier with the scale-out server announcement and these additional conversions provide a more complete set.

Additional Ethernet adapter support
Support for the PCIe2 LP 4-Port (10Gb+1GbE) SR+RJ45 Adapter (#EN0T) and the PCIe2 LP 4-Port (10Gb+1GbE) Copper SFP+RJ45 Adapter is expanded to include the Power S812L and S822L servers. This adapter provides very cost-effective Ethernet NIC function, but does not provide Linux network install capability.
Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface
Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI) address translation enables use of effective addresses as used on the host processors. It avoids I/O setup costs and enables direct user-space communication with accelerator, which can be leveraged by both IBM or OEM CAPI-aware adapters and applications. To help clients plan for its future deployment, IBM is announcing the enablement feature code for this capability on Scale-out servers. The CAPI Activation feature code (#EC2A) is a chargeable feature that will enable the use of separately acquired CAPI hardware and applications when they are available.

The 4-core Power S814 offers entry clients running AIX, IBM i, or Linux an entry server based on POWER8 technology. It uses a 3.02 GHz POWER8 Processor Card (#EPXK) with processor core activation features (#EPZK and #EPYK). All four processor cores must be activated, but a factory deconfiguration feature (#2319) is supported. The chargeable feature EPYK is used for these activations. Three no-charge EPZK features are used with the IBM Solution Edition (#4928) in place of three EPYK activation features for those eligible to use the solution edition.
The 4-core S814 supports the 16GB memory feature (#EM8B). A max of four of these features is supported for a system maximum of 64 GB.
The 4-core S814 supports a maximum of eight disk drives or eight SSDs or a combination of eight disks and SSDs in the system unit. This is true with any of the storage backplane options selected. SAS drives located in feature code I/O drawers such as the EXP24S (#5887) are not supported. Attachment to SANs is supported.
The following previously announced SFF-3 SAS drives are supported in the SAS bays of the 4-core S814 system unit:
- 146 GB 15k rpm disk drive (#ESDT) available in July
- 139 GB 15k rpm disk drive (#ESDU) available in July
- 300 GB 15k rpm disk drive (#ESDB) available in June
- 283 GB 15k rpm disk drive (#ESDA) available in June
- 387 GB SSD (#ES0L and #ES0M) available in June
Other SFF-3 drives are not supported.
The 4-core S814 has seven PCIe Gen3 slots. One slot is used by one 4-port 1Gb Ethernet adapter. If the expanded function backplane is chosen, another PCIe port is used, leaving five ports. The statement of direction made for a future PCIe expansion drawer does not apply to the 4-core S814.
The Capacity BackUp specify feature 0444 is supported with the 4-core processor card (#EPXK) in IBM i environments. With its P05 software, it can be paired with a POWER7 or POWER7+ or POWER8 server with P05 or P10 software tier.

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support all at no additional cost to you.
Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1, and AIX 7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type "smitty esa_main", and select "Configure Electronic Service Agent." In addition, ESA now includes a powerful Web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.
Benefits
Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM. The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM.
More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.
Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support website at
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.
