Overview

Discover desktop PC capabilities in an integrated, conveniently mobile package. These newest models in the IBM ThinkPad 380 family, the ThinkPad 380E and ThinkPad 380ED, deliver significantly greater power and capacity than previous models. Fast processors, industry-leading storage, large bright displays and superior multimedia functions, combined at a very affordable price, make these notebooks the best choice yet for general-business mobile computing. These systems feature an Intel 150MHz(1) (ThinkPad 380E) or 166MHz (ThinkPad 380ED) PentiumTM processor, both with MMXTM technology and 256KB of L2 cache memory for increased processing speed. Also featured are large 12.1-inch (measured diagonally), 800 x 600 resolution, TFT(2) or FRSTN(2) displays, supporting up to 64K colours. The new FRSTN display gives faster screen refresh and better contrast than traditional DSTN(2) displays. There is even a new enhanced bass response speaker. The compact system design allows a 1.44MB(3) diskette drive (FDD), a 2.1GB(3), 3.0GB or massive 5.1GB hard disk drive(4) (HDD). The CD-ROM is optional in the ThinkPad 380E. An optional Enhanced Port Replicator lets you connect desk-bound accessories (such as an external keyboard, mouse, monitor or other peripherals including CardBus PC Cards) to the IBM ThinkPad 380E/ED in one easy step. All ThinkPad 380E/ED systems come with Microsoft Windows 95 operating system software and selected applications (including MPEG 1(5) support) pre-installed. The award-winning Lotus SmartSuite 97 application is also included with all models, allowing immediate office productivity. Notes - (1) MHz only measures microprocessor internal clock speed, not application performance. Many factors affect application performance. (2) TFT = Thin Film Transistor (technology of the display); FRSTN = Fast Response Super Twisted Nematic (technology of the display); DSTN = Dual Super Twisted Nematic (3) MB = one million bytes and GB = 1000 million bytes when referring to hard disk drives. (4) S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring ANalysis and Reporting Trchnology) HDDs that are optionally replaceable or upgradeable by IBM authorized service personnel. (5) Moving Pictures Experts Group software allowing multimedia viewing capacity without additional hardware.

If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09564. In "Digital Audio" applet in OS/2 Warp 4, unsupported record format like 4-bit ADPCM can be selected. When audio data is recorded with unsupported format, the data becomes unusable. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09565. "Digital Audio" applet in OS/2 Warp 4 does not show correct position locator when MIDI files are played. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09566. If you do not follow the instructions of CS4236 audio driver installation on OS/2 Warp 4, the reinstallation of OS/2 Warp 4 may be required. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09567. On OS/2 Warp 4, when an FDD is formatted, the following error message appears upon the first access to the FDD. After second access, it does not occur. "5908: An error has occurred and the message is not accessible. Contact the supplier of the application." The same error happens when PCMCIA HDDs are formatted. If you experience this problem, apply the fix for OS/2 Warp APAR JR09568. The PC Card slots accept one Zoomed Video port card only in the lower slot. These systems support PCMCIA PC cards that draw a maximum of 5 watts for PC Card slots of the system and 7 watts for PC Card slots of the ThinkPad 380/385 Port Replicator. The 6318/6321/G40 CRT is not supported because the interlace mode isn't supported at 1024 x 768 resolution. The system audible alarm will not sound under some setup modes. It can be enabled by using the ThinkPad Features program. An external CRT that supports only VGA resolution cannot be installed if the display mode is both LCD and CRT, because the display port always has an SVGA signal as long as the LCD screen is on. Enabling IR on the host system during a co-sessions host session is not supported. A suspend/resume operation during a modem application in the Windows DOS box may cause the application to hang. The modem application should be closed before entering a suspend. A suspend/resume operation during audio recording may result in unexpected results. Audio recordings should be stopped before entering suspend. When using the redirection feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115 Kbps, the ThinkPad 365XD should be configured as the requestor. IRQ for Sound Blaster Pro is 5 or 7 only. Many factors, including continuous use of the HDD or CD-ROM drive and reading long video files, will impact battery life. The system is designed so that the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used. PC card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port.
    Suspend Mode Operational Considerations
Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode. When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power Management (APM) is installed. The system should be in either hibernation or "off" when exchanging the battery. During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 100 mW at 12 V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V. When using the ThinkPad 560 Port Replicator and CRT monitor, the computer output is displayed only on the LCD of the computer after suspend and resume. The LCD screen cannot be displayed correctly after suspend/resume operation while the CRT monitor is connected to the ThinkPad 560 Port Replicator attached to a ThinkPad 380/380D system. The IBM 3270 PCMCIA adapter cannot be used in a DOS environment. An interlaced CRT display, for example, a G40, 6318 or 6321 display monitor in 1024 x 768 resolution, cannot be supported. When booting up OS/2 Warp 4, a system problem may occur when displaying OS/2 Welcome message and Tutorial when there is 640 x 480 resolution with 16M colour setting.
    PLANNING INFORMATION
    Cable Orders
All cables are included with the system.
    Installability
The ThinkPad 380E family systems require approximately 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other memory and other optional features.
    SECURITY, AUDUTABILITY and CONTROL
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
    Standard Security Features
    Electronic Personalization
The Electronic Personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your name, contact address or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's non-volatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt.
    Passwords
A Power-on Password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears: Each time the system is turned on When the system is returned to normal operation from hibernation mode A hard disk drive (HHD) password (HDP) is used to protect HDD data. Once the HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored on the HDD, the data remains protected even if the HDD is removed to another system. The HDP password prompt appears: Each time the system is turned on When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode
    Optional Security Features
The user can attach a Kensington Lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This allows the system to be leashed to any convenient fixed point. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

    Competitive Positioning (paragraphs)

With the ThinkPad 380E/ED IBM has once again established its leadership role in bringing the latest technologies to market in an affordable and reliable package. IBM dominates the General Business segment with its unmatched choice of the top Intel processors, and the largest hard drives in its class. IBM is the only manufacturer to offer both 3.0GB and 5.0GB hard drives in a business segement notebook. In addition IBM offers the value conscious consumer the 12.1"FRSTN (fast response super twisted nematic ) display on its 380E models, a much more attractive display than standard DSTN models can provide due to higher refresh rates. Compaq and Toshiba will have trouble competing with these new editions to the 380 family because of their combination of the most advanced processors available in the notebook marketplace, gigantic hard drives, and 8-20X CD-ROMs, which will rival any desktop's performance. At last a notebook that offers the convenience and portability expected of a notebook without sacrificing computing power, and all at a very affordable price.
