  • CICS TX Standard is a new offering that can provide the ability to quickly modernize a first project or distributed CICS COBOL workload on to cloud, to provide an ability to realize cloud benefits.
  • CICS TX Advanced is renamed from CICS TX on Cloud and can provide a comprehensive solution for a larger enterprise. It includes features such as workload balancing and high scalability. CICS TX Advanced can be used by mid-size to large deployments for containerized environments, such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Red Hat® OpenShift®.

CICS TX can provide an enhanced developer experience using the integrated IBM Debug for Linux® on x86 Debugger. This can help developers to easily debug CICS TX and COBOL applications running in containerized environments, including on cloud platforms.

Overview

CICS TX can be deployed in a wide variety of container platforms, including Docker, Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, or any other public cloud environments, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft™ Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP). CICS TX can be used as a standalone server or in tight integration with CICS Transaction Server for z/OS® (CICS TS), where an enterprise requires high levels of performance, flexibility, and processing agility for their hybrid cloud platform.

CICS TX is part of the CICS family of application servers, which provide a full range of capabilities in support of enterprise hybrid cloud approaches and digital transformation agendas. CICS TS delivers on high performance, high density, and low latency requirements for transactional applications on IBM Z® in the data center. The integration of CICS TX with CICS TS ensures high security and regulatory compliance for business critical and core applications.

CICS TX portfolio

With an included x86 COBOL compiler from IBM, CICS TX can provide a deployment solution for cloud workloads. CICS TX can leverage Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform to provide an enhanced developer and DevOps experience.

Key features of CICS TX include:

  • Capability to create and run IBM COBOL applications on a large variety of cloud platforms, providing the agility to create portable and production-ready CICS TX containers.
  • Batch processing to enable IBM COBOL batch applications to read and write files stored in IBM Db2® and CICS TX Structured File Server (SFS).
  • IBM debug for Linux on x86 to debug COBOL and CICS applications in CICS TX.
  • Red Hat OpenShift operators that can simplify deployment and management of CICS TX applications on Kubernetes.
  • Red Hat OpenShift-compatible CICS TX container image for creating reliable, security-rich, and portable containers.
  • Logging and monitoring through industry-standard open source cloud native tools.
  • Optimized connectivity to CICS TS for hybrid deployments.

These core capabilities are part of both CICS TX Standard and CICS TX Advanced.

CICS TX Standard 11.1

CICS TX Standard 11.1 can provide an affordable solution for a first project or for more simple application needs. It is suitable for existing applications running in a single CICS region. CICS TX Standard is offered with flexible licensing options and a self-service purchase model for rapid deployment of workloads in cloud.

For clients that are seeing an increasing growth in workload, they can simply transition their deployments to CICS TX Advanced which can provide enterprise-level capabilities for scalability and workload management.

CICS TX Advanced 11.1

CICS TX on Cloud is renamed to CICS TX Advanced. The program number, terms and conditions, and pricing for CICS TX Advanced remain the same as previously announced1.

The program name, part descriptions, trade-up descriptions, service description, and license documents are updated to reflect the new program name, CICS TX Advanced. Clients do not need to make any changes to their systems.

CICS TX Advanced contains the same technology as the formerly named CICS TX on Cloud. The CICS TX Advanced container image is Red Hat-certified for creating reliable, security-rich, and portable containers.

The following table maps the program number from the prior name to the new name. The release numbers remain the same. Release 10.1 is withdrawn from marketing (see the Reference information section), whereas release 11.1 is available for ordering. Both releases shown below are in support at the time of this announcement:

CICS TX Advanced 11.1, formerly named CICS TX on Cloud 11.1, provides a more comprehensive solution with built-in load balancer, workload management, and high scalability features. It is suited for moderately sized applications through a standalone deployment environment or large-scale workloads in hybrid deployments with CICS TS.

Description

Top rule

CICS TX provides a rich set of capabilities that can be used to easily deploy workloads that are running on distributed platforms today, to the cloud. CICS TX is built on the robust and scalable runtime of TXSeries®, which is a proven, high-performing transaction engine for distributed platforms. CICS TX offers an additional edition, CICS TX Standard 11.1, that provides flexibility and choice with deployment in third-party cloud environments and uses a digital marketplace.

CICS TX Standard is available as a monthly license and sold through IBM Marketplace. This fulfillment channel enables a self-service procurement route for clients and gives them the flexibility to use CICS TX Standard in an operating expense (OpEx) model compared to the traditional capital expense (CapEx) model. Clients will have the ability to bring their solutions to market faster, using the flexible licensing and procurement medium. Clients wanting to scale beyond the limits of CICS TX Standard can stop the monthly license and move their applications to CICS TX Advanced, which provides enterprise-class features. Compared to the traditional sales routes, CICS TX Standard can be procured in just a few clicks and without the need of a sales touchpoint.

CICS TX Advanced, formerly CICS TX on Cloud, is tailored for moderately sized configurations running in standalone environments or large scale deployments in a hybrid environment with CICS TS. CICS TX Advanced enables the capability to scale to multiple CICS TX pods elastically to provide a higher transaction throughput. It also has the capability to vertically scale application server processes per CICS region. To provide efficient workload management for enterprise deployments, CICS TX Advanced comes with Layer 7 Workload Manager that intelligently routes the transactions to suitable CICS TX pods.

The following core capabilities are included in CICS TX Standard 11.1 and CICS TX Advanced 11.1:

  • Leverage Red Hat for the best in class cloud native experience: Red Hat images of CICS TX ensure that enterprises can use secure images in product environments. CICS TX comes with a Red Hat OpenShift operator image. Operator is a significant capability that Red Hat OpenShift has provided for Kubernetes-based deployments that can make Day 2 operations very simple. Clients can automatically upgrade, scale, deploy, restore, and backup.
  • Utilize IBM COBOL for Linux on x86 and IBM debug for Linux on x86: CICS TX includes IBM COBOL for Linux on x86 and IBM debug for Linux on x86, a productive and powerful development environment for building and modernizing COBOL applications in a single Docker image. This allows clients to develop, deploy and debug COBOL applications on top of platforms like Red Hat OpenShift on cloud.
  • Optimize connectivity with CICS TS: This capability allows CICS TX regions to connect with CICS TS using optimized IP interconnectivity (IPIC). It also permits data and business logic to be shared across the two CICS regions. This connectivity and sharing are key features when creating hybrid applications that leverage the flexibility of cloud and scale and performance characteristics of IBM Z.

It includes built-in workload management and scalability features, and supports the same set of core CICS APIs as that of CICS TX Standard for cloud-based deployments. The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage®, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

Software Maintenance

Licenses under the IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. Two charges apply: a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, see the IBM Support Guide.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Enhanced support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of five years from the planned availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support is in effect.

This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice.

If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Yes. Software Subscription and Support, also referred to as Software Maintenance, is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Product upgrades and Technical Support are provided by the Software Subscription and Support offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software, and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance by telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, see the IBM Support Guide. Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.

Unless specified otherwise in a written agreement with you, IBM does not provide support for third-party products that were not provided by IBM.
