IBM enables ordering of virtual serial numbers on selected IBM Power technology-based servers for use with IBM i

IBM® now offers you the ability to acquire a virtual serial number and assign it to a logical partition, also known as a virtual machine (VM). IBM i software can then be ordered on or transferred to the virtual serial number instead of being tied to a physical IBM Power® serial number. Having the IBM i entitlement, keys, and support entitlement on the virtual serial number provides the flexibility to move a VM to a different Power machine.

Virtual serial number (feature EVSN) enablement

You can acquire virtual serial numbers by placing an order for feature EVSN on eligible Power9 and Power10 machines, which are specified in the “Virtual serial number” document at the IBM i License Topics website. Feature EVSN is available on new machine orders or as an upgrade on existing machines.

Feature EVSN enables you to acquire and install virtual serial numbers on your eligible Power machines. When feature EVSN is ordered and the order fulfills, go to the Entitled Systems Support website to get an activation code, which you will install on the Power machine on which the feature EVSN order was placed. The activation code contains the reserved virtual serial numbers for this machine. Installing the activation code makes the reserved virtual serial numbers available on the machine. You can then assign a virtual serial number to a partition.

At the time when the virtual serial number is reserved, an IBM inventory record is created for each virtual serial number, similar to physical machine inventory records. The IBM Virtual Server Serial (4850-VSN) is a new machine type and model created specifically for virtual serial numbers. The 4850-VSN is associated with each virtual serial number in IBM ’s inventory records. The 4850-VSN and its associated features are not orderable in the e-configurator, but they are automatically assigned to the virtual serial number record. When a virtual serial number record is retrieved from Inventory Services, the 4850-VSN is associated with the record.

To obtain copies of the IBM Statement of Limited Warranty, contact your reseller or IBM. An IBM part or feature installed during the initial installation of an IBM machine is subject to the full warranty period specified by IBM. An IBM part or feature that replaces a previously installed part or feature assumes the remainder of the warranty period for the replaced part or feature. An IBM part or feature added to a machine without replacing a previously installed part or feature is subject to a full warranty. Unless specified otherwise, the warranty period, type of warranty service, and service level of a part or feature are the same as those for the machine in which it is installed.
