IBM AIX 7.3 TL1, IBM AIX 7.2 TL5, IBM AIX 7 Standard Edition, IBM AIX 7 Enterprise Edition 1.9, IBM Private Cloud Edition 1.9, and IBM Private Cloud Edition 1.9 with AIX 7 have been updated and enhanced

PDF versionPDF

Overview

The IBM AIX operating system is an open standards-based UNIX® operating system that has been the foundation of mission-critical workloads and databases for tens of thousands of clients for over 35 years. AIX provides an enterprise-class IT infrastructure that delivers the reliability, availability, performance, and security that is required for organizations to be successful in a global economy.

Now, IBM offers updates and enhancements to the AIX operating system and products that include AIX.

IBM AIX 7.3 Technology Level (TL) 1

AIX 7.3 TL1 delivers enhancements that can help you respond faster to business demands:

  • Improvements to Fibre Channel Non-Volatile Memory Express (FC-NVMe) capability to include N-port ID virtualization (NPIV) client support. This capability requires IBM PowerVM® Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) 3.1.4, an IBM Power10 system with FW1030, or later; an NVMeoF NPIV-capable host adapter; and an NVMeoF storage subsystem.
  • Support for Dynamic System Optimizer (DSO) for Power10 systems. DSO automatically tunes applications and processes in real time for performance gains.
  • Support for RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) version 2. A key feature of RoCE is to route packets across multiple subnets.
  • USB mass storage support for the attachment of devices greater than 2 TB capacity. AIX can address the first 2 TB of 512 byte/sector formatted devices and the first 16 TB of 4096 byte/sector formatted devices.
  • Support for AIX install and boot from iSCSI attached storage. Consult the IBM System Storage Interoperation Center (SSIC) for additional information on supported configurations.
  • Increased NFS file size limit beyond 32 TB. See the AIX 7.3 TL1 Release Notes for the new supported limits.
  • AIX tar command support for pax archive format. Previously, AIX tar supported only star archive format. The new pax format archive can be created using the "-- format=pax" option in AIX tar command.
  • Support for Unicode 14.0. This new feature enables AIX libc APIs to support 144,697 characters for a total of 159 scripts.
  • Updated sendmail to version 8.17.1.
  • Updates to the open source packages: cdrtools 3.1.0.0, libxml2 2.9.14, perl 5.34.1.0, and BIND 9.16.24.

The following enhancements help maximize availability and reliability:

  • Improvements in AIX dump performance through hardware-accelerated compression on IBM Power9 and Power10 systems.
  • JFS2 filesystem now allows dynamic switching between inline and outline logging.
  • The chpv command now provides an option to force offline a poorly performing PV in a mirrored pair.
  • Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI) support for 16 Gb and faster FC adapters. FDMI is an industry standard SAN specification, whereby the host operating system interacts with compliant switches, providing host-specific and adapter-specific information to the switch. This information simplifies SAN administration of fabric topology, identifies individual hosts, and facilitates debugging. Note this support is limited to physical FC adapters, and it is not currently provided for NPIV adapters.
  • Support for 16 Gb and faster FC adapters, including NPIV clients, to improve the time for I/O failover to alternative paths when link events are detected on either the host or target sides. This new capability is off by default, and it needs to be enabled. Concurrent update is supported.
  • Improvements in AIX network installation manager (NIM) Internet Protocol (IP) version 6 configuration and setup. NIM commands nimconfig and nimclient provide a new option to allow users to configure a dual-stack IPv6 environment on both NIM server and the client, avoiding manual setup steps. The dual-stack environment will enable network hosts and routers to support both IPv4 and IPv6 over a single interface definition.

The following enhancements help protect data from core to cloud:

  • OpenSSL 3.0 is included. Note that OpenSSL 0.9.8 is removed from this release.
  • Support for ECDH ciphers in ftpd.
  • Support for enablement of the self-encrypting drive (SED) capability of NVMe drives on Power10 systems. This enables data-at-rest encryption on NVMe drives without additional impact to I/O performance or CPU utilization. IBM PowerVM Platform KeyStore (PKS) must be enabled for NVMe SED key management. The new command line utility nvmesed is introduced to provide management of NVMe SED drives.
    Note: NVMe SED enablement requires:
    • An SED-capable NVMe drive
    • A Power10 system with FW1030, or later
  • AIX administrators can offset the LDAP gid and uid to prevent LDAP users from assuming privilege roles inadvertently.
  • Support for physical volume (PV) encryption, providing a data-at-rest encryption solution that performs efficient encryption and decryption of data within a PV. Multiple encryption key protection methods include:
    • Passphrase
    • KMIP-compliant key management servers
    • PowerVM PKS
    • Key file methods
  • Command line utilities hdcryptmgr and keysvrmgr are used to provide cryptographic management of PVs and cryptographic key server information. This encryption feature can be used transparently beneath file systems such as AIX JFS2, third-party filesystems, and storage management solutions that run on top of raw physical disks on AIX. AIX utilizes Power9 or Power10 on-chip cryptographic accelerator to improve performance.
    Note: The PowerVM PKS requires:
    • A Power9 system with FW950, or later
    • A Power10 system

Additional enhancements:

  • AIX adds support for new Power I/O features:
    • PCIe3 4-Port 10 GbE Base-T Adapter (#EN2W and #EN2X)
    • PCIe4 2-Port 100 GbE RoCE x16 Adapter (#EC75 and #EC76)
    • PCIe4 2-Port 64 Gb FC Adapter (#EN1N and #EN1P)

IBM VM Recovery Manager and IBM PowerHA SystemMirror deliver new subscriptions and enhanced functionality

PDF versionPDF

Overview

IBM VM Recovery Manager 1.7

VM Recovery Manager enables you to deploy a virtual machine (VM) restart-based high availability (HA) solution across a group of servers to help achieve better business continuity without the requirement for one-to-one backup hardware.

VM Recovery Manager 1.7 delivers the following enhancements:

  • Support for multi-tenant hosting.
  • Support for maintaining Independent Software Vendor (ISV) compliance with logical partition (LPAR) shared processor pools management between the source and target to preserve processor pool configuration upon restart at disaster recovery (DR) host.
  • Enhanced security with multifactor authentication (MFA) for the VM Recovery Manager graphical user interface (GUI).
  • VM Recovery Manager redundant orchestrator capability -- controller system (KSYS):
    • The redundant orchestrator enables multiple instances of KSYS to be incorporated into an HA and DR cluster configuration. If the primary KSYS goes offline, a secondary KSYS node becomes master automatically.
  • VM Recovery Manager DR workgroup mapping support:
    • Virtual local area network (VLAN) or virtual switch mapping between the source and target at the workgroup level is enabled. VMs in a workgroup no longer require custom scripts to map connections between sites, making deployment and management easier.
  • Reduced VM Recovery Manager DR infrastructure:
    • DR host and target configurations can now have reduced paths to the target, allowing for fewer Fibre Channel (FC) adapters on the target side.
  • VM Recovery Manager DR provides more detailed messages:
    • More detailed messaging and enhanced documentation helps enable client installation with minimal outside assistance.

IBM PowerHA® SystemMirror®

PowerHA SystemMirror is IBM Power's strategic HA solution for mission-critical environments. It enables you to deploy an HA solution that addresses both storage and HA requirements with one integrated configuration, which offers robust performance along with a simplified user interface.

PowerHA SystemMirror is enhanced as follows:

  • Resource Optimized High Availability (ROHA) for cloud:
    • HA and DR cloud cost-effectiveness is increased by minimizing active processors, memory, and licensing on DR VMs.
    • PowerHA Enterprise Edition ROHA in PowerHA automates control of resource activation at the DR location.
  • Automated backup and recovery to and from public cloud:
    • Offsite backup and recovery to the IBM cloud is provided as an alternative to physical media.
    • Hybrid cloud automated backup and recovery through PowerHA for IBM AIX and IBM FlashSystem storage eliminates the need for on-premises backup and recovery to on-premises physical media.
  • Active node halt policy for public cloud:
    • This function prevents partitioned cluster scenarios, which can cause data corruption.

SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM features include:

  • Automated workspace deployment, configuration, scaling, and monitoring
  • Advanced authentication and encryption to help ensure data is protected in transit and at rest
  • Automated infrastructure provisioning, configuration, elastic scaling, backups, hardware maintenance and failure management, and upgrades
  • Unlimited storage databases

Overview

SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM is a distributed, highly scalable cloud SQL database designed to power modern data-intensive applications. SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM is a multimodel database, supporting relational, key-value, document, geospatial, time series data, and full-text search. With a relational engine at its foundation, SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM delivers optimized scalability and simplicity to modern data architectures and can help reduce overall complexity and cost.

Built on a modern, lock-free cloud-native architecture, SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM can process queries with extremely low latency, while scaling access to tens or hundreds of thousands of concurrent users. The capability to ingest millions of events per second with atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability (ACID) transactions while running complex analytical queries on that data in near real time means that as workloads grow, SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM can provide easier scale up to meet demand without complex application rewrites or data migrations.

As a managed service, SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM removes the need for users to manage infrastructure, provision clusters, handle upgrades, or troubleshoot failures. This helps reduce operational expenses, while accelerating organization agility and enabling enterprises to focus on clients rather than managing their data infrastructure.

SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM delivers:

  • Universal storage. Both large-scale online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) are supported on this single, default table type. Universal storage gives you the best qualities of row stores and column stores while reducing data duplication, data movement, and data latency.
  • SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM pipelines. Built-in parallel data ingestion technology natively ingests high-throughput, near real-time data from external sources such as Apache Kafka, Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, and Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) data source.
  • MySQL compatibility. SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM is wire-protocol compatible with MySQL or MariaDB
  • Security and compliance features. SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM brings security-rich features such as integrated user authentication and full encryption of data in transit and at rest, and meets requirements for SOC 2, ISO 27001, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) compliance.
  • Separation of storage and compute. Your teams can scale compute resources to meet the needs of workloads, while managing storage needs independently.
  • Distributed ingest, bulk or streaming, lock-free or non-blocking reads and concurrency. SingleStoreDB as a Service with IBM offers a lock-free architecture that processes transactions and updates without locking or blocking concurrent reads, delivering the capability to perform bulk or streaming ingestion online, simultaneously with query workload.
  • Capability to suspend and resume workloads. Clusters can be suspended and resumed, making your data available when you need it, and helping to minimize cost when workloads are inactive.

IBM Hyper Protect Virtual Servers 2.1 extends the Confidential Computing solution portfolio, leveraging IBM Secure Execution for Linux to provide the next generation of workload isolation, granularity, and scale on IBM zSystems and IBM LinuxONE to protect data and workloads from internal and external threats

PDF versionPDF

Overview

The need to protect sensitive business data and intellectual property is continuing to grow and does not affect only large or regulated organizations. The need for protection against internal and external threats is always present, while the cost of resolution and the number of data or security-related breaches is growing. The trend to run containerized applications in production has significantly increased in past years and is continuing to grow.

IBM Hyper Protect Virtual Servers has addressed the need for data and privacy protection during deployment and production. The protection against internal and external threats begins during development and continues in production environments. Hyper Protect Virtual Servers continues to evolve and leverage the latest technologies. Key Hyper Protect Virtual Servers concepts are the data-in-use protection and simplified management of deployment while assuring data confidentiality, integrity, and no interactive access to a deployed instance.

Hyper Protect Virtual Servers 2.1 uses the next generation of workload isolation technology provided by IBM zSystems and IBM LinuxONE through IBM Secure Execution for Linux, a hardware-based security technology that is designed to provide scalable isolation for individual Linux workloads on-premises or in hybrid cloud environments.

Hyper Protect Virtual Servers 2.1 provides clients the following benefits:

  • Flexible deployments in Linux Hypervisor
    • Secure Execution for Linux enables deployment of isolated workloads protected by Confidential Computing at scale, and enables client-defined middleware and hypervisor. With this, Hyper Protect Virtual Servers can be integrated into a virtualized Linux environment and is no longer an isolated logical partition (LPAR) on the system. The protection boundary moves from the LPAR level, which includes the operating system and application, to complete isolation of the application from the operating system. Client code and data are exclusively controlled by their administrators, no exceptions.
  • Uses existing logging facilities
    • During deployment, a remote LogDNA instance can be provided to get per-deployment relevant, workload-specific logging information reported with encrypted data-in-flight.
  • Multiparty contract and attestation of deployment
    • Apply Zero Trust principles from workload development through deployment. As multiple personas and legal entities collaborate, it is essential to separate duty and access. Hyper Protect Virtual Servers is based on a newly introduced encrypted contract concept, which enables each persona to provide its contribution, while being ensured through encryption that none of the other personas can access this data or intellectual property. The deployment can be validated by an auditor persona through an attestation record, which is signed and encrypted to ensure only the auditor has this level of insight.
  • Integrated data-at-rest protection
    • Uses a Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS) encryption passphrase only present within the Trusted Execution Environment and based on a key derivation during deployment, based on seeds provided by the workload and environment persona.
  • Container runtime and malware protection
    • Any Open Container Initiative (OCI) image gains the benefit of a Confidential Computing solution with an additional level of protection. Hyper Protect Virtual Servers 2.1 will only deploy container versions, which are validated at deployment through explicit digest or are signed.

For more information, see the IBM Hyper Protect Virtual Servers website.

Key requirements

Hyper Protect Virtual Servers 2.1 requires one of the following IBM servers:

Hyper Protect Virtual Servers 2.1 can be deployed on any Linux distribution with a KVM compliant hypervisor.

For additional details, see the Technical information section.
