Description

Top rule

Z Development and Test Environment provides a development and test platform for developers, testers, and operations personnel who are responsible for applications that run on z/OS and z/OS middleware. Z Development and Test Environment runs on an Intel or Intel-compatible PC or server, which can help eliminate the cost differentials that exist between distributed and existing mainframe development environments. Running a Z development environment on a PC enables a more portable, flexible, and potentially lower-cost environment for development teams.

Z Development and Test Environment can be used for development and testing of new application functions and maintenance changes. Additionally, Z Development and Test Environment can be used for the following:

  • Investigation and verification of new middleware levels (version-to-version upgrades)
  • Prototyping new application architectures
  • Demonstration of application functions
  • Internal employee education and training

Z Development and Test Environment can be used with IBM or third-party independent software vendor (ISV) tools to support development and test activities that include:

  • Source code or binary editors
  • IDEs
  • Development-level source code compile and build systems
  • Analysis and problem determination tools
  • Data import, export, inspection, and alteration utilities
  • Middleware or application setup and configuration tools

Note: Any use of third-party ISV tools must be arranged through the ISV directly, rather than through IBM. Usage must comply with the license terms as provided by the ISV and IBM at all times. For clarification on licensing or use cases, contact your IBM representative.

Z Development and Test Environment is not licensed for use with production management tools or performance testing tools that include:

  • Production-level source-code-management (SCM) repositories or libraries
  • Production-level build-and-deploy systems
  • Performance tuning tools

New in Z Development and Test Environment 13.1

Z Development and Test Environment 13.1 features include the following:

  • REST API changes

Z Development and Test Environment Enterprise Edition 13.1 transforms APIs to provide a consistent approach to referencing artifacts through a universally unique identifier (UUID) that is created or used in the Z Development and Test Environment. These APIs are also changed to follow the kebab-case naming convention for all input properties, output properties, and the API endpoint labels. Although not all APIs are transformed, most of the API work is done in 13.1 to create consistency across all the APIs that are provided by the Z Development and Test Environment. Now the RESTful API documentation is following the OpenAPI 3 specification.

  • Volume component creation from an existing Z Development and Test Environment

Z Development and Test Environment Enterprise Edition supports creating volume components from an emulated z/OS on Z Development and Test Environment. After users add a Linux® running a Z Development and Test Environment emulator source environment, users can quickly create a volume component that compresses and transfers existing volume files from an emulated z/OS on Z Development and Test Environment that runs on a host Linux system to the storage.

Z Development and Test Environment 13.1 is packaged with an updated and preconfigured set of IBM z/OS software for development usage. This software includes:

  • z/OS 2.4, which includes subfeatures
  • IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS, 9.0
  • CICS® Transaction Server (CICS TS) 5.4 and 5.5
  • IBM IMS 14.1 and 15.2
  • IBM Db2® for z/OS, 11.1 and 12.1
  • IBM MQ for z/OS, 9.1
  • IBM Java™ SDK for z/OS, 7.1 and 8.0
  • IBM Enterprise COBOL 6.3
  • IBM Enterprise PL/I 5.3
  • IBM Rational® COBOL Runtime 6.0.1
  • IBM z/OS Debugger 14.2
  • IBM OMEGAMON Performance Management Suite for z/OS, 5.5

The included IBM software products are provided for development purposes only on an as-is basis. Technical support and APAR/PTF deliverables are not provided for the included software as listed in the Supporting Programs section of the product license with the purchase of the Z Development and Test Environment.

Z Development and Test Environment includes the z/OS components of IBM DevOps for the Enterprise products to aid in performing integrated software delivery scenarios with Z Development and Test Environment. These components include:

  • IBM Developer for z Systems®, 14.2.2 z/OS components for easy integration of Z Development and Test Environment with IBM Developer for z Systems to enable off-host edit, compile, and debug. Note that use of these components requires purchase of licenses of Rational Developer for z Systems or IBM Developer for z Systems.
  • IBM Rational Team Concert® 7.0 z/OS components, for easy integration of Z Development and Test Environment with Rational Team Concert to enable off-host preproduction builds. Note that use of these components requires purchase of appropriate Rational Team Concert licenses.
  • IBM UrbanCode® Deploy Agent for z/OS Workloads 7.0.5 for easy deployment of z/OS applications onto Z Development and Test Environment for development and test activities.
  • Host and client versions needed for IBM Wazi for Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces has been updated, which includes products and components such as Debug for z/OS, DBB Toolkit, Z Open Automation Utilities (ZOAU), z/OS Explorer, IBM Wazi Developer for Eclipse (previously known as ZOD) Client, Z Open Editor, Zowe™ VS Code Extension, Z Open Debug, IBM User Build, IBM Remote System Explorer (RSE) API, and RSE API Plug-in for Zowe CLI (RSE-CLI).

Z Development and Test Environment offers flexible licensing options with four purchasing options:

  • Z Development and Test Environment Enterprise Edition Resource Value Unit (RVU) is intended for enterprise teams and is licensed in terms of the highest number of activated emulated CPs through the Resource Value Unit (RVU) license metric. This metric accommodates the dynamic nature of the software development lifecycle, enabling movement of users and activation of development and test environments, as needed, to support maintenance, development, and test activities. The web-based interface is included in this option.

Z Development and Test Environment is activated through software-based licensing to better meet the needs of enterprise users who might have data center requirements and plans for cloud deployment that are hindered by hardware-based licensing.

The maximum number of emulated CPs per Z Development and Test Environment instance is eight, which is consistent with the architecture of z Personal Development Tool. Clients should plan on testing with their specific workload to determine the optimum number of CPs per instance. In general, three to four CPs per instance would support the workload in most environments; the advantages of more CPs might be marginal, depending on the nature of the workload.

  • Z Development and Test Environment Enterprise Edition Authorized User Single Session is intended for enterprise users who need their own nonshared environment and is licensed in terms of the number of Authorized User Single Session (AUSS) license metric. This metric is activated through software-based licensing to better meet the needs of enterprise users who might have data center requirements and plans for cloud deployment that are hindered by USB hardware-based licensing. The web-based interface is included in this option. Each authorized user is allocated three Z-emulated CPs that are not sharable.
  • Z Development and Test Environment with Parallel Sysplex includes the emulated environment for development, test, employee education, or demonstration of applications that run on z/OS. It also includes IBM z Personal Development Tool support for virtual coupling facility. The z/VM® software distribution enables virtual coupling of z/OS guests under z/VM. This offering is targeted at enterprise teams. RVU licenses are offered and the product is activated by software-based licensing.

The minimum configuration required for one Parallel Sysplex instance is three CPs (one for z/VM, plus two z/OS guests). In general, eight CPs per instance would provide optimal support (two for z/VM, with two z/OS guests consuming three CPs each). The maximum number of Z-emulated Central Processors per Z Development and Test Environment with Parallel Sysplex instance is eight.

Note that Z Development and Test Environment with Parallel Sysplex is intended for clients who have Parallel Sysplex applications deployed. Installation and configuration of z/VM is required to deploy z/OS in a Parallel Sysplex configuration. z/OS in a Parallel Sysplex configuration can only be run as guest operating systems under z/VM, and usage of z/VM is restricted to operations required to facilitate use of the z Personal Development Tool in a Parallel Sysplex configuration that includes z/OS guests under z/VM and one or more virtual coupling facilities. The Parallel Sysplex offering is sold through the IBM special bid process. For ordering, contact your IBM representative or an IBM Business Partner.

  • Z Development and Test Environment Personal Edition is intended for individual users and users who require portability. It is licensed through the Authorized User Single Install metric and is activated with a USB hardware device. It includes zPDT® emulator and ADCD but does not include the web-based interface.

Each instance of Z Development and Test Environment Personal Edition is allocated three Z-emulated CPs. Personal Edition is available through a self-checkout option in major countries on the IBM Z Development and Test Environment website and through a sales representative. Hardware pack is provided free with your initial purchase and can be ordered separately through the procedure described on the IBM Rational Product Software through Passport Advantage® Online web page.

Increased application quality

Z Development and Test Environment provides an environment that is functionally comparable to what is available on the mainframe. Using the z/OS operating system and middleware can potentially reduce retesting and rework when moving applications from Z Development and Test Environment to the quality assurance or preproduction environment on the mainframe. Developers can have an isolated test environment to test application changes that can then be merged into the next level of testing.

It should be noted that Z Development and Test Environment is not intended as a replacement for a mainframe. The final compile and testing of software must be performed in an environment as close as possible to that which would run in production. This requires an environment that can only be satisfied with the capabilities delivered by IBM Z hardware.

Potentially decreased cost

Z Development and Test Environment executes on an x86 PC, which can reduce development Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS) on the production mainframe for functional application testing. The development MIPS can be reallocated to other production or testing needs, thus freeing additional capacity for new workloads while reducing line-of-business development costs and chargebacks.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
