Overview |
DB2 on Cloud provides database as a service on IBM's SoftLayer® global cloud infrastructure. It offers the rich features of an on-premises DB2 deployment without the cost, complexity, and risk of managing your own infrastructure. Based on DB2 software, it comes with a preconfigured instance optimised for on-line transaction processing applications.
While DB2 on Cloud is configured to support the creation and management of databases for on-line transaction processing applications, it gives you the flexibility to create your own instances for analytic or mixed workloads. Use of this offering reduces the time required for provisioning and deploying DB2 so more resources can be devoted to developing new solutions and innovation.
Key features and benefits of IBM DB2 on Cloud are:
- Accelerates and simplifies deployment. Take advantage of DB2 without the need for an on-premises infrastructure.
- Native encryption included with all configurations. You're in control of your data, even when it's not in your building. Leverage the benefits of infrastructure as a service with the confidence of knowing your data is encrypted in flight, while in use, and at rest.
- Optimizes performance and enhances security. Experience speed and reliability with a private virtual machine or dedicated bare-metal.
- Four hardware configurations and two database editions to meet your business demands. Keep infrastructure costs in line with the changing needs of the business.
- Provides SQL compatibility support for Oracle Database applications.
Key prerequisites |
A terminal with Internet connectivity is required to access the DB2 on Cloud offering. Ongoing administration can be done locally on the hosted system using tools, such as telnet, that allow connection to the database server machine. Alternatively, users can download, install, and run utilities like IBM Data Server Runtime Client or the IBM Data Server Client (not included as part of the service).
Planned availability date |

Product positioning |
According to IDC, cloud-based databases as a service (DBaaS) is a vital, affordable alternative to on-premises database deployment, especially for application workloads in the cloud. This make sense for both small and large customers, according to Carl W. Olofson, in the October 2014, IDC #251648. Within the broader definition of DBaaS in the industry, there are a number of competing models for cloud database service delivery that enable infrastructure functionality as exposed or embedded capabilities.
DB2 on Cloud provides a complementary offering to on-premises databases, providing the opportunity to scale without concern of physical infrastructure. DB2 on Cloud currently blends some of the characteristics of IaaS and PaaS. The customer selects the server configuration based on needs. IBM will then create the VM and install DB2, then address any subsequent VM security patches, management, and restore operations. The customer is responsible for DB2 instance creation, HA setup, OS patches, mandatory and optional DB2 patches (fix packs), upgrades, database backup and restore, and setting up encryption.
Benefits of the current platform include:
- Reduced maintenance
- Ability to monitor the platform
- Faster time to deploy solutions
- Cost-effective configurations
DB2 on Cloud complements the existing Cloud Data Services product portfolio by offering more control over database resources for OLTP workloads in the cloud.
- Cloudant®: Managed document-style NoSQL DMBS
- dashDB: Relational DBMS built for data warehousing
- DB2 on Cloud: Relational DBMS for On-line Transaction Processing
- SQLDB: Managed relational DBMS for On-line Transaction Processing
Consider DB2 on Cloud for a variety of operational and analytic workloads, from rapid development and testing of new applications to deployment of production applications. Choose DB2 on Cloud when the time to deliver is short and resources and funding are scarce. Decisions regarding platforms -- cloud or on-premises -- can often be made after deployment.
IBM's DB2 on Cloud service, unlike some vendors such as Microsoft and Amazon, does not charge for data movement to, from, or between cloud data centres.
DB2 on Cloud is available at a fraction of the price of Oracle PaaS database solutions and provides better uptime on IBM's SoftLayer infrastructure, like IBM's base availability is 99.9% versus Oracle's 99.5%, neither including HA.

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.
