If the IBM Domino server software is installed on a machine for emergency backup purposes only and either (1) has not been started (cold backup) or (2) started but sitting idle (warm backup) and not doing work of any kind, there is no requirement to pay a license charge. Note that a scheduled hardware outage, such as preventive maintenance, installation of upgrades, or switching to a larger capacity machine during peak periods, is not considered a backup situation.
The following are examples of situations (not an exhaustive list) in which the software is considered to be "doing work" and would require IBM Domino server licenses:
High availability configuration (for example, clustering or replication) even if the server is not being accessed by users Development, program maintenance or testing
