What is IBM Cloud Mass Data Migration?
IBM® Cloud Mass Data Migration accelerates the secure movement of terabytes to petabytes of data into the IBM Cloud using rugged, portable storage devices with 120 TB of usable capacity. Using superior technology and hardware, Mass Data Migration helps overcome common data transfer challenges such as high network costs, long transfer times and security concerns — all in a single solution.
How do I start using Mass Data Migration?
Log into the IBM Control Portal using your account or IBM ID. In the left pane, choose “Storage” > ”Data Migration” > “Mass Data Migration.” Click “Request a Device” to begin your order. Submit multiple requests if multiple devices are needed.
A device is shipped to you based upon your network and shipping information. Open the lid, connect it to your network, unlock the encryption pool, mount the NFS or SMB share, and begin copying your data. When migration is complete, shut down the device (automatically locking the encryption pool), close the lid, and return your device to IBM.
IBM will offload your data into the IBM Cloud Object Storage bucket specified in your order. Mass Data Migration uses a four-pass DOD-level data wipe to ensure complete and permanent erasure of all customer data.
To track status throughout the process, refer to the Active Requests section on the Mass Data Migration page in the Control Portal
Who should use Mass Data Migration?
Whether you want to free up on-premises data space, archive infrequently used data, create a backup and recovery pool, create a media repository, or explore IBM Cloud services, Mass Data Migration can quickly and securely move terabytes to petabytes of data into the IBM Cloud at a low cost. Mass Data Migration devices are equipped to perform in nearly any environment (data centers, offices, warehouses, ships, etc.). Mass Data Migration is also a great alternative if network data transfer options are cost-prohibitive, too slow, or unavailable.
How much data can I transfer using Mass Data Migration?
There is virtually no limit to the amount of data you can transfer using Mass Data Migration. You can transfer a few terabytes or even multiple petabytes at a time. Each device has a usable capacity of approximately 120 TB at RAID-6. For large data migrations over 120 TB, multiple devices can be used either in parallel or in a series to move all the data in a single migration. Alternatively, a single device can be used in iterative migrations. For example, to transfer 1 PB of data you can use nine Mass Data Migration devices in parallel, or execute nine waves of migrations, requesting a single device each time.
How long does it take to transfer my data?
From the time a customer submits a Mass Data Migration Request to when their data is accessible in their IBM Cloud Object Storage bucket, the turnaround time can be as little as seven days to transfer up to 144 TB of raw data or 120 TB of usable capacity. However, many variables impact the speed of a data migration including a customer’s network speed, local server performance and file sizes.
How long can I have a Mass Data Migration device?
A device may be kept onsite at no cost for the first 10 business days. This does not include the day your device is shipped or the day you receive it. If additional time is needed to complete your ingestion, you can extend your use for USD 30 per day thereafter.

How are files stored on the Mass Data Migration device?
Mass Data Migration devices use a ZFS file system with LZ4 compression and AES 256-bit encryption.
Can I use Mass Data Migration to export my data out of the IBM Cloud?
Mass Data Migration does not support exporting data out of the IBM Cloud at this time.
In what regions is Mass Data Migration available?
Currently, Mass Data Migration is only available in the United States. All data is migrated into IBM Cloud Object Storage in the US Standard Cross Region tier of service. Devices cannot be shipped from one region and returned to another region. Further domestic and international expansions are coming soon.
Does Mass Data Migration encrypt my data?
Mass Data Migration encrypts all data with 256-bit encryption and provides a strong password to unlock the storage pool. All data transfer within IBM is done over SSL.
How does Mass Data Migration physically secure my data?
All Mass Data Migration devices are housed in rugged and durable enclosures. These cases are waterproof, shockproof and tamper-evident to ensure device and data security roundtrip.
How do you erase my data from the Mass Data Migration device after it has been offloaded to IBM Cloud Object Storage?
As soon as your data offload to Cloud Object Storage is complete, IBM initiates a four-pass DOD-level data wipe to permanently and promptly erase your data from the device.
What network interfaces does Mass Data Migration support?
Mass Data Migration devices have 10-Gbps network interfaces with RJ45 (CAT6a) & SFP + copper—RJ45 to SFP+ converter included—network ports.
What are the file interfaces on Mass Data Migration?
Mass Data Migration uses the Network File System (NFS) and Server Message Block (SMB) interfaces.
How do I use the file interface on Mass Data Migration?
After you have unlocked the encryption pool, mount the NFS or SMB share on the server that contains the data you intend to migrate, then begin copying your data files into the NFS or SMB share.
What are the benefits of the file interface on Mass Data Migration?
The file interfaces are based on mature file and network software enabling large numbers of large files to be copied and transported to the IBM Cloud.
What is the Mass Data Migration default shipping option?
