Ovum Decision Matrix: What to Look for in a DevOps Platform

2 min read

An optimized DevOps approach to software delivery is critical as businesses are moving to a new stage of innovation.

The evolution of DevOps has been driven by the widespread adoption of cloud and containers. As adoption and experience have matured, teams now look to revise the use of tools to optimize the delivery lifecycle and realize the value of DevOps.

An optimized DevOps approach to software delivery is critical as businesses are moving to a new stage of innovation. They are no longer just experimenting with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence—they are embedding them in their business. They are using a mix of open container platforms like OpenShift and hybrid cloud environments to manage all of their critical data and applications. They want to work with more partners and need to be able to depend on the fast delivery of reliable software.

Ovum has monitored this changing market and regularly assessed vendors’ ability to support project teams in their adoption and optimization of DevOps.

Ovum found that “The modern computing environment is rapidly being transformed beyond DevOps with cloud-native computing (microservices in containers, managed by Kubernetes, as well as the use of serverless computing), but DevOps continuous delivery pipelines underpin cloud-native computing. Agile and DevOps development are therefore an essential foundation for doing cloud-native computing.”*

IBM believes that a successful realization of the value of DevOps emerges from three primary axes: orchestration, quality and optimization. The core components of the IBM DevOps solution supports this through the practices of continuous integration and continuous delivery, continuous testing, and value stream management.

Ovum found that “IBM plays well across enterprise IT and the engineering industries, and its investment in DevOps has moved it into a leading position in DevOps tooling.”*

The optimization of DevOps

This assessment by Ovum notes that with greater automation and use of DevOps pipelines, it becomes feasible for projects to measure team velocity, identify bottlenecks, and generally track time delays in the delivery process, and IBM agrees.

I am delighted that IBM has been recognised as a DevOps leader by Ovum. We have worked hard to provide an industry-leading, hybrid cloud DevOps capability, and I am glad Ovum notes this investment has moved us into a leading position in the DevOps tooling market. Our vision is to bring DevOps stakeholders together around three key axes: orchestration, quality, and optimization. We will continue to work with our clients and partners and help teams deliver reliable software as fast as possible.
