New Deployment Journey: VPC on IBM Cloud

1 min read

We gathered experts to create a technical deployment journey that outlines the path to VPC deployment.

IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) allows you to establish your own virtual private cloud by defining a virtual network that is logically isolated from all other public cloud tenants. The underlying software defined networking (SDN) and virtual network functions allows you to quickly establish the network constructs and on-premises connectivity that can support your various workloads (i.e., cloud-native, virtual machines, etc.).

Start your VPC journey on IBM Cloud today

As you begin your VPC deployment, wouldn't it be great to follow the path taken by experts who have completed this before? We felt the same way and gathered experts from the field — such as the IBM Cloud Solution Engineering Team (formally GCAT - Global Cloud Acceleration Team) — and leveraged their experience to create a technical deployment journey that details the path from start to finish:

The steps in this journey serve as a technical guide, beginning with a new IBM Cloud Account and leading towards a fully configured VPC network environment, which is needed to support VPC based workloads.

Steps on the technical deployment journey

The journey path includes the following:

  • Review architecture and concepts: Understand the building blocks and architecture of VPC on IBM Cloud.
  • Understanding network flows: Explore underlying data flows and plan your connectivity to on-premises or other services.
  • Prepare your IBM Cloud account: Enable Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) and create appropriate Identity and Access Management (IAM) and resource groups.
  • Provision VPC: Use IBM Cloud Schematics and a Terraform template to quickly provision a VPC.
  • Establish transit gateway connectivity: Configure inter-connectivity to other VPCs or IBM Cloud Classic infrastructure.
  • Setup VPN connectivity: Establish private connectivity to your on-premises network via a VPN.
  • Setup Direct Link connectivity: Establish private connectivity to your on-premises network via a Direct Link.
  • Extend to advanced elements: Understand additional concepts, such as a "Hub-n-Spoke" pattern.

At the completion of this journey, you will have a fully operational multi-zone VPC and be able to understand the private and dedicated connectivity options to on-premises and to other VPCs.
