We are extremely thrilled to share that we will be launching our First CubeSat Space Mission named “ENDURANCE” to LEO (Lower Earth Orbit) in partnership with EnduroSat.

The mission will occur approximately December 2021.

Our ENDURANCE CubeSat mission is about making space accessible to everyone on this planet — in other words, democratizing access to space. The ENDURANCE Mission is also about IBM and Red Hat developer communities working together and innovating!

ENDURANCE Boarding Pass

Since the beginning of space exploration, space has only been accessible to well-resourced nation-states, organizations and the super-wealthy. The ENDURANCE Mission offers an opportunity to change that paradigm. Imagine this: Children from the most remote, rural areas (in any part of the world) being able to directly access space by pushing their code to a CubeSat in space. We are proud to have this opportunity to help inspire a sense of inspiration, hope, confidence and accomplishment in this younger generation of space leaders. We believe experiencing space in this way will be priceless for many students and children and will open doors for innovation beyond our wildest imagination.

About the mission

Our vision and goal for this mission are simple — how can we streamline the process of getting school-aged children access to the wonders of space to inspire the next generation of future space explorers and leaders? The solution is clear — we leverage IBM/Red Hat technology to allow students worldwide to interact directly with a CubeSat in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), giving them the ability to use code to access data from various sensors, take pictures, perform calculations and get the results back down to earth via ground stations and the IBM Cloud.

This is all made possible through our partnership with ENDURANCE CubeSat. By leveraging IBM’s Edge Computing in Space solution (powered by Linux and Red Hat Podman), developers will be able to execute containerized code on the CubeSat as it orbits the Earth. Code will be first be pushed to IBM Cloud, where it will undergo verification. Then the code will be uplinked to the ENDURANCE CubeSat via ground stations. Once on ENDURANCE, the code will be containerized and executed via Podman against the data from various sensors to perform the key functions listed above.

The new era of space has just begun. Let’s all work together to build the next frontier for innovation — space!
