We're excited to announce a new virtual server profile called Variable Compute.
Here at IBM Cloud, we understand the need for variety in configurations and billing methods to meet the needs of the different workloads (and budgets) you run on your cloud.
We’ve launched IBM Cloud Transient Virtual Servers (multi-tenant spot pricing for on-the-fly spin-ups), GPU-enabled virtual servers (multi-tenant for data analytics and deep learning), and IBM Cloud Reserved Virtual Servers (multi-tenant for sustained workloads with deep, contract-based savings). The breadth and depth of extensive options for virtual servers in IBM Cloud has grown quite a bit over the past year, and we’re happy to report that we’re not slowing down anytime soon.
Introducing Variable Compute
We’re excited to announce a new virtual server profile called Variable Compute that is available in IBM Cloud data centers around the globe.
IBM Cloud Virtual Servers configured with the new Variable Compute profile are ideal for sporadic workloads—flexible in terms of CPU resource requirements. To offset this variability in performance, we’ve ensured that at any given point in time, a customer using Variable Compute virtual servers will have a minimum baseline level CPU output (relative to the core size of the variable compute virtual server configuration).
Significant savings with Variable Compute
Hourly and monthly billing for Variable Compute virtual server profiles are significantly lower than our standard virtual server profiles available in the public IBM Cloud Virtual Server lineup, which include Compute, Memory, GPU, Balanced, and Balanced Local. Most standard software and add-ons are available on Variable Compute as well.
Because of the variability of CPU performance, it’s recommended that these servers be used for low-usage/intermittent workloads that do not require consistent CPU performance, such as the following examples:
- Websites and applications with low to moderate traffic
- Staging environments
- Development and testing environments
- Non-production environments
