Kubernetes conformance certification, new security controls, additional data centers, improved UI, and Kubernetes 1.8

The rate of change for the IBM Cloud Container Service has been spectacular.  Earlier this month, IBM announced a rebranding, and now we are IBM Cloud Container Service.  The service is still the same great offering that launched in May 2017 and then expanded to support London and Sydney. Now we have more features to share.

IBM is excited to announce that IBM Cloud Container Service has passed the software conformance tests, which were administered by the Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF), identifying our offering as one of the first fully certified Kubernetes offerings in the market.  IBM has been a long contributor and consumer of open-source projects.  Our users can be confident in the openness and portability of IBM offerings.  In September, IBM was also a member of the founding class of the CNCF’s Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) program.




The first new security capability is support for edge worker nodes.  What are edge worker nodes and how do they help me?  This capability improves your security posture by minimizing the attack surface within your Kubernetes cluster.  Edge worker nodes can improve the security of your cluster by allowing fewer worker nodes to be accessed externally and by isolating the networking workload.

We also provided support for more IBM Cloud data centers.  In US South, we added the dal13 datacenter, in addition to dal10 and dal12.  We also deployed US East, providing capacity in the Washington DC data centers.  Expanded capacity in Australia came with the addition of Melbourne.  IBM knows data residency is important to you, which is why we are also excited to announce support for Paris as well.  Now you can deploy your single-tenant dedicated Kubernetes clusters in any of these supported data centers, ensuring your applications and data run where you want them to!

Thirdly, we improved UI to simplify the user experience.  If you prefer the GUI to deploy Kubernetes clusters in IBM Cloud Container Service, then this updated layout simplifies the information that is required to get started.

Lastly, we are thrilled to announce the availability of Kubernetes v1.8.2.  The latest version was released by the community on September 28, 2017.  You can deploy a cluster to test capabilities in this version or upgrade your existing clusters when you are ready.  Use our documentation and previous upgrade blog as your maintenance guide.
