The Latest in Hybrid Cloud Management: Version 2.0

4 min read

Today, I am proud to announce the general availability of IBM Cloud Pak® for Multicloud Management Version 2.0 to our clients.

With our largest release since the 2019 launch, we are excited to share the latest in Hybrid Cloud Management and show how to securely manage applications, no matter how they are designed or where they are deployed.

Here’s a quick video that I believe will be a fantastic introduction followed by a deeper dive into the new functionality of IBM Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management 2.0:

New features of 2.0

Self-service capabilities

Additional self-service capabilities in this release allow developers to provision infrastructure and application components from a predefined service flow. This means providing a full-service library feature for developers to access on-demand.

Let’s look at an example:

  • Operator A. is in IT operations and wants to publish an easily accessible but customizable library of deployable services.
  • Developer Z. is a counterpart and development owner who wants to see a list of available services.
  • Check out the four-step process that each would go through with the new self-service model:

This model allows developers easy access to a standard service library to deploy applications and infrastructure faster. Pre-release testing shows meaningful reductions in the amount of time spent communicating between developers and operators. The update also allows IT Ops teams to have a controllable, consistent, and personalized service library for individual development teams.

SRE tools for hybrid applications

To continue responding to new and critical initiatives, we are enhancing the Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management to support the implementation of an SRE operating model. Here are some of the new updates and how they will impact and enhance SRE tooling to manage a hybrid cloud environment.

Bastion control: A new single point of access terminal supports secure remote access to managed systems. This centralized bastion host simplifies the troubleshooting process across regions and deployment models with increased visualization and remediation tooling. The update also includes postmortem tools, such as audit and replay capabilities.

Session replay: Replay sessions for auditing, compliance, and SRE postmortem reviews. This allows SRE teams to have a consistent source of review and feedback for future incident response and resolution:

ChatOps: There is now a native ChatOps interface that connects with your preferred tools, including PagerDuty and Slack. This further accelerates the SRE’s ability to receive and react to incidents immediately using the tools they leverage every day. The following is one such example of an SRE requesting an incident report followed by a more detailed account and recommended next steps for resolution:

Declarative model for SLOs: Transparently define SLO targets, error budgets, and monitor SLO status continuously with synthetic testing natively available. By using this feature, the SRE can create and ensure adherence to the objectives that are jointly determined with development. By automating this, the developer can understand and react to changes that impacts SLO targets in real time:

Hybrid policy model

The updates to Governance, Risk, and Compliance policies allow for a faster, more flexible solution for both VMs and containers. This hybrid approach to policy applications allows operators to apply a policy that is enforced, even as applications are edited and moved by development teams (see this video, also linked below, for more detail). The latest updates also include templatized policy-as-code for industry standards such as:

  • HIPAA
  • FISMA
  • NIST
  • PCI

This policy-based, Governance and Risk dashboard is ready out of the box and is versatile and adaptable for your unique compliance and governance requirements.

Cost and license management

Managing cloud costs continues to be top of mind for many clients. In this update, cost modeling and asset management is now an easier, more seamless experience. Updates include the following:

  • IT Cost Modeling, Showback, and Chargeback have all been enhanced with new visibility features to find resources and more detailed report generation/exporting.
  • Chargeback generation steps have been simplified to three key steps: Define rate cards, assign rate cards, and generate the chargeback report.

It’s important to note the general availability of IBM License Advisor. License Advisor supports aggregation of license data across hybrid, multicloud environments, including management of IBM License usage. This allows operators to access and manage a detailed view of license usage per Kubernetes cluster as well as bundled product utilization.

Operator-based install

We are introducing a containerized form of installing the Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management with operators. Twenty-two operators support the Cloud Pak in both Go and Helm. This new approach allows for multiple install options, both online and offline.  For our clients this makes several things easier:

  • More repeatable installation and upgrades.
  • Constant health checks of every system component.
  • Deployment of one Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management operator by the user and the twenty-one remaining services and modules install automatically.

EMA top 3 award for Hybrid Cloud Management – End-to-End Management Platforms

In addition to the release of v2.0 we are extremely proud that IBM Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management has received a top 3 award from Enterprise Management Associates (EMA). Watch this video chat with EMA Research Director, Torsten Volk, about policy and automation guardrails within the Cloud Pak and how they help developers optimize security, risk, and compliance.

Get started

With IBM Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management v2.0, it is my distinct privilege to share how these features have come together in a unified control plane that will both increase IT operational efficiency and accelerate time to market. By freeing IT Operations from the daily lower-value tasks, it allows teams to focus on innovation and critical projects, which ultimately leads to value creation in your most critical applications.
