Introducing GitLab Ultimate for IBM z/OS, a solution designed to drive enterprise-wide DevOps automation, including applications that run on IBM z/OS.
In January, GitLab and IBM announced GitLab Ultimate for IBM Cloud Paks, which is designed to help streamline team collaboration and increase team productivity with a comprehensive, easy-to-use DevOps platform.
When it comes to driving enterprise-wide transformation, a key factor to consider is the number of business-critical applications that run on IBM Z. IBM Z, and in particular, IBM z/OS plays a critical part in many large enterprises’ ability to process transactions fast and reliably. Large global banks, retailers and insurance companies all depend on IBM z/OS for its incredibly fast processing. According to the 2020 Mainframe Market Pulse Survey conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Deloitte, 91% of the enterprises surveyed indicated that expanding their mainframe footprints was a priority, with over half the respondents looking to integrate data on the mainframe with new cloud-native services as part of application modernization.
Large enterprises look for ways to drive an enterprise-wide DevOps strategy that is platform agnostic. Over the past decade, DevOps software for the z/OS teams has continued to evolve and teams that build applications with z/OS now use many of the same tools as their counterparts that develop applications for distributed systems (apps that run on Linux, Windows).
GitLab Ultimate for IBM z/OS
As part of the continued collaboration between GitLab and IBM, we are now announcing the general availability of GitLab Ultimate for IBM z/OS, a solution designed to drive enterprise-wide DevOps automation, including applications that run on IBM z/OS. This solution bundle extends and enhances IBM GitLab Ultimate for IBM Cloud Paks to embrace z/OS development.
Central to the z/OS development capabilities in this new solution is the powerful IBM Dependency Based Build (DBB), essential for handling the massive and complex applications found on z/OS. DBB provides capabilities to automate and build capabilities for traditional z/OS applications, such as COBOL and PL/I. In addition, DBB allows mainframe asset integration into GitLab Ultimate for IBM Cloud Paks.
