New, 2nd-Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors Now Available on IBM Cloud

The much-anticipated 2nd-Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors are here

The new, 2nd-Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors (formerly code-named “Cascade Lake”) are finally here, and they are officially available in monthly IBM Cloud bare metal servers in IBM Cloud data centers around the globe. Intel announced the availability of their much-anticipated next generation of processors today at their Data-Centric Innovation Day in San Francisco, California.

2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors on IBM Cloud will help our enterprise clients migrate performance-heavy workloads to the cloud. Historically, key enterprise applications have mostly been implemented on-premises; but increasingly, companies are looking to “burst up” to the cloud as a way to manage IT capacity. This new IBM Cloud computing infrastructure built with 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon technologies will help our clients address their growing performance needs.

Enhancements in our latest compute nodes include higher per-core performance and CPU frequencies, increased DDR4 memory and speed capacity, and an optimized cache hierarchy. An added layer of hardware-enhanced security inside the 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors further secures data, software, and applications across the stack.

The buildout of 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processor platforms on IBM Cloud

IBM Cloud is the only major cloud provider that has delivered advanced 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processor platforms to the market as monthly bare metal servers on a global scale—initially in key IBM Cloud Multi-Zone Regional (MZR) data centers across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

New monthly IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers can be ordered and configured today with one of the below 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors, including:

  • Intel Xeon Gold 5218 (16 cores per CPU, 2.3 GHz)

  • Intel Xeon Gold 6248 (20 cores per CPU, 2.5 GHHz)

This initial launch is just the beginning of our commitment to enabling our clients with best-in-class infrastructure. We’re also working closely with Intel to roll out more multicloud, 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processor platform capabilities in our IBM Cloud Virtual Server cloud hosts and SAP-certified infrastructure over the coming months.

Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory and IBM Research

2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors also support the ability to offer Intel Optane™ DC persistent memory. Intel Optane DC persistent memory affordably increases memory capacity, enhances storage performance, and decreases latency compared to storing data on SSDs or hard drives, allowing analytics to run faster than conventionally possible.

IBM Research has applied the newly announced Intel Optane DC persistent memory to real-world, large-scale analysis of bacterial genomic data. This workload really benefits from the “big memory” paradigm that Intel Optane DC persistent memory provides because the problem inherently cannot be easily data-parallelized and distributed with a conventional distributed map-reduce paradigm. The team has been able to achieve a throughput of over 80% of DRAM-only performance, yet with a 6-terabyte capacity that’s more than 2X larger than the previous generation Intel Xeon Scalable platforms. Coupled with two 2nd-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and Intel’s Thread Building Block platform, this initial Intel offering has already enabled IBM Research to perform genomic analyses that have been impossible until now. IBM Cloud Infrastructure plans to enable Intel Optane DC persistent memory capabilities in certain IBM Cloud server configurations in the coming months.
