IBM Cloud puts your data to work with Watson to generate exponential outcomes.

Data is the new basis for competitive advantage. But no human can read, see, feel, hear and make sense of all the data that is transforming their work and their profession. IBM Cloud, with Watson, can. While public information is adequate for consumer AI (artificial intelligence), it is insufficient for enterprise applications because 80% of business data is not searchable on the web it is held by companies, and that is where the real gold is. That’s decades of experience that companies can leverage.

Cognitive capabilities are foundational to IBM Cloud. Watson which is only available on IBM Cloud - has the full range - machine learning, artificial intelligence, Cognitive - because that’s what is needed for decision making and transformative business outcomes.

IBM Cloud offers more than 160 services across cognitive, IoT, blockchain, data and more.
Watson has become the AI platform for business across industries because:

  1. Watson can “see” better than any other AI system. It can automatically describe the contents of an image, and research indicates it can recognise melanoma from skin lesion images with 95% accuracy
  2. Watson can “listen”, understanding speech almost as well as humans
  3. Watson can “read” 12 languages (90% of global internet population)
  4. Watson can “feel” data from sensors in elevators, buildings, autos, even ball bearings

The global HQ for IBM Watson IoT is located in Munich, and a European Centre of Excellence for Watson Health in Milan. We have two IBM Cloud Garages in Europe (London and Nice), part of a global network of 9 Garages where we help clients generate rapid innovations on the cloud.

For the enterprise, the cloud must handle the full variety of data types, which requires a cloud platform that can ingest, cleanse and make sense of public, private, licensed and multimodal data (e.g. video, text, images, etc.)

IBM is transparent on how we treat your data and insights: your data is your differentiation.

Why would you want to give your competitive edge away? Clients have to protect their data and insights.

When you use a providers cloud and AI (artificial intelligence) services where is your data? What happens with your insights? Is it training someone else’s “knowledge graph”? Is it being monetised in ways you don’t understand?

IBM was instrumental in developing the EU Data Protection Code of Conduct for Cloud Service Providers and was one of the first companies to sign up to it. We consider this the most reliable tool available to assure cloud users that their data is secure.

IBM was chosen in 2016 by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Informatics to provide cloud computing for the European Commission, Parliament, Council and for the 57 European Agencies across every EU Member State. The high standard of data protection, security and privacy offering by IBM and partners was a winning factor.

As part of IBM’s robust and enduring commitment to protecting our clients’ data, IBM’s Bluemix Infrastructure services, together with another 24 of our services, have signed up to the EU Data Protection Code of Conduct for Cloud Services (the EU Cloud Code of Conduct). Having our services adhere to the EU Cloud Code of Conduct is crucial as we and our clients approach the May 2018 implementation deadline for the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

This code of conduct is unique in that it is the only Cloud code which the European Commission has been involved in developing. On top of the European Commission’s active role, the thorough process to develop the EU Cloud Code of Conduct also involved the EU’s Article 29 Working Party, representing national Data Protection Authorities. The EU Cloud Code of Conduct is also the only code that addresses the full range of cloud services, reflecting the comprehensive nature of GDPR and covering data processors and controllers.

IBM Cloud is a hybrid platform that supports your transition to public cloud at speed.

Clients are not going to move all their data to anyone’s cloud. That’s not wise, practical or even allowed in some industries. But that data does need to be connected and more importantly, combined with other sorts of data.

Enterprises want to tap into the cost and innovation benefits associated with the public cloud, without exposing mission critical applications and data or abandoning existing investments.

The IBM Cloud is architected to connect data wherever it is this is the power of a hybrid platform. IBM helps you manage across multiple clouds and mission critical systems as you transform your business.

IBM recently signed the largest cloud transformation deal in the financial services sector globally with Lloyds. The 10-year, 1.3 Billion Pound Sterling deal will provide dedicated cloud hosted securely in both Lloyds and IBM data centres in the UK and will manage the application migration services to the new cloud.

The top 10 global Systems Integrators have adopted IBM Cloud to accelerate hybrid cloud deployment including Accenture, CapGemini, and CSC.

IBM has forged strategic partnerships with Cisco, Box, VMWare, SAP, SugarCRM and Tencent to drive hybrid cloud adoption and transform the way people work.

IBM was the first cloud platform to partner with VMWare, and we now have more than 1,400 shared customers (including Marriott International and Clarion) moving their VMWare environments to IBM Cloud.

IBM is committed to open cloud, and to building platforms and services that are interoperable at their core. IBM is a founding member and top contributor to other leading open cloud initiatives, including Cloud Foundry Foundation, Cloud Native Computing Foundation and the Open Container Initiative.

Watson on IBM Cloud helps you innovate in your industry and professional context.

Watson is the leader in AI (artificial intelligence) for business. Consumer AI is generally about voice recognition tied to search.

Unlike consumer AI, Watson is trained in industries and their specific vocabulary and workflows. Watson helps professions do their work better by using and applying industry training.
Business data is not generic. It’s highly specific to industries – the vocabulary, the context, meaning, regulation and workflows. It exists as text, manuals, images, and sensor feeds.

IBM Cloud provides curated sets of licensed and public data relevant to your industry, so you can combine it with your data to accelerate innovation in your field.

IBM Services has a team of industry, process and IT experts who invent and apply breakthrough thinking and technology.

A fundamental strength of Watson’s cognitive capabilities is delivering unique domain expertise for specific industry solutions. Watson – available only on the IBM Cloud – is an expert in industry-specific domains, and can be trained by experts, as well as machine learning. The value of a cognitive solution like Watson is in its ability to become trained in a specific industry.

Industry-specific ecosystems designed for data are available on the Cloud e.g. Watson Health, Watson IoT and developer ecosystems. IBM now has:

  1. One of the world’s highest-volume IoT platforms in Weather.com
  2. One of the largest commercial health data clouds
  3. One of the largest commercial video platforms
  4. Blockchain as a service
  5. One of the largest providers of Spark-as-a-service, and data-as-a-service marketplace
  6. Quantum computing on the Cloud

Blockchain will do for trusted transactions what the Internet has done for information. Blockchain services are now available on the IBM Cloud. While Ethereum can scale 15 transactions a second, Hyperledger can scale 10,000. Beyond banks and financial services clients (such as our recent deal with a consortium of European banks to establish a Trade Finance platform for SMEs), we are also bringing Blockchain to supply chains, such as Walmart to track movement of pork in China to ensure food safety; and Maersk for shipping and supply chains.
