Communities build better technology

Open source software projects are motivated by creative interest, independent of commercial ventures. Open source communities ensure consistently high quality software releases and agile responses to end user needs.

Open source projects are perfect for evolving a cloud platform that many independent developers use to prototype, implement, deploy, and iterate applications based on shifting business priorities.

Built through IBM’s commitment to open architecture and governance, Bluemix reflects the practical results of leadership in OpenStack, Cloud Foundry, Node, Docker, OpenWhisk, and other open source projects.

By integrating open source technologies into Bluemix, we gain insights for development communities with cross-ecosystem benefits.

IBM Cloud is open by design

Cloud Foundry application runtimes

As an independent Linux Foundation Collaborative Project, Cloud Foundry orchestrates how Docker containers integrate with infrastructure in more than 45 global data centers, letting developers exclusively iterate code in their preferred language (including Node.js, Java, Swift, Ruby, Go, Python) to answer the demands of users in their market.

Bluemix and Open Containers Initiative (OCI)

With active participation in the Open Containers Initiative—a Linux Foundation project—IBM guides that project’s latest developments into IBM Containers, the compute option Bluemix provides for lifecycle management of applications through Docker images and containers.

Event-driven and serverless

IBM Bluemix OpenWhisk is an event-driven computing option that provides a framework for defining events and triggers that execute actions (think microservices) in Docker containers, which the OpenWhisk engine creates and destroys as needed more or less in real-time. IBM guides the OpenWhisk open source project as an incubating project within the Apache Software Foundation.
