For a business that generates huge amounts of data, gaining insight into all that information requires powerful analytics tools. That’s why the company counts on IBM Cognos software to support enterprise-wide operational and financial reporting.
A spokesperson elaborates: “We’ve been using IBM Cognos software to support our business intelligence [BI] needs for more than a decade. In that time, Cognos has grown to become a truly mission-critical solution that touches almost every area of our business. We currently operate four large instances of Cognos, each supporting a specific business unit, with finance and engineering representing two of our biggest environments. In all, we have several thousand people using Cognos, and they’ve built close to 1,000 reports, which are consumed by teams across the business.”
The company saw the approaching end-of-support for its Cognos solution as both a challenge and an opportunity. The company knew it had to act fast and upgrade to the latest version.
“We simply could not risk running an unsupported version of such a critical piece of software,” continues the spokesperson. “At the same time, it’s important for us to keep our enterprise technology current, and give users access to the latest and greatest capabilities. For that reason, we were eager to upgrade as soon as we could.”
Upgrading to next-generation analytics
Working with IBM, the company made the move to the latest version of IBM Cognos Analytics, upgrading all four instances of the software in just four months. The company collaborated closely with IBM Analytics Services to upgrade one instance of the software, drawing on expert guidance from the IBM team to guide a smooth transition. The company then used that successful experience to upgrade its remaining three instances of Cognos Analytics in parallel.
The spokesperson recalls: “Moving from our previous BI platform to Cognos Analytics was a big step up for us. As we operate a very complex, multi-instance landscape and set a tight deadline for the upgrade, we put a lot of effort into planning every stage of the project to make sure it went smoothly. Thanks to the commitment of all our stakeholders and expert support from IBM Analytics Services, we completed the upgrade on time and without any showstoppers. We received very positive feedback from senior management for having carried out such a seamless upgrade.”
To bring users up to speed with the new features of Cognos Analytics, the IBM Analytics Services team led a series of workshops with some of the company’s senior developers. Here, the IBM consultants demonstrated the latest features of the software and the development team gained valuable first-hand experience with the solution. These developers then used their new learnings to create an in-depth presentation about the new capabilities offered by Cognos Analytics, which was distributed to all users, so they could familiarize themselves with the latest functionality.
New ways of working with data
By upgrading to the latest-generation Cognos Analytics solution, the company has avoided the risk of running unsupported software, giving it peace-of-mind that users across the business will continue to enjoy reliable access to all-important analytics and BI capabilities.
What’s more, teams are making use of powerful self-service visualization and dashboarding tools offered by Cognos Analytics to bring data to life in new ways. With the next-level analytics capabilities, the company can gain faster insight into data, and give business users more ownership and accountability for the reports they generate and use.
“Our users really like the look and feel of Cognos Analytics; the interface is modern and intuitive,” confirms the spokesperson. “It’s easy to navigate within the solution and the search functionality is much improved, returning rapid results. The new self-service features have also been very well-received. Whereas in the past, people had to use a separate tool to visualize data, they can now create a host of interactive visualizations directly in Cognos Analytics, saving them time and effort, so they can find the answers they need faster.”
