Business challenge story
Sights set on growth
Química Amparo, a leading manufacturer of cleaning products, has expanded rapidly in recent years, winning a 13-percent share of the Brazilian market. Never resting on its laurels, the company has set a target to double its market share within the next few years. To meet its goal, the company must identify the best route to growth.
To gain insight into performance across its various lines of business, Química Amparo relies on its core set of SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA applications, which previously ran on multiple x86 HP and Dell servers. As the company grew, data volumes increased, and report generation began to slow down – delaying time-to-insight. To wash away this threat to its competitiveness, Química Amparo set out to find a way to supercharge its reporting capabilities.
Giving core systems a spring clean
The company considered upgrading its x86 server estate with new hardware, but soon realized that this offered only a temporary fix, and would not solve the long-term capacity and growth issues.
Leandro Taveira da Silva, IT Manager at Química Amparo, takes up the story: “To support rapid reporting on ever-growing volumes of data, we needed to ramp up our server capacity. Previously, we had an Intel scale-out installation of SAP HANA, which involved complex and time-consuming maintenance and server management. We could have continued with our scale-out model based on x86 architecture by purchasing additional x86 machines and installing additional racks in our data center to accommodate them. In the end, we decided to scale up – obtaining the same capacity boost by deploying just two IBM Power servers, to cut our management and maintenance costs.”
Química Amparo decided to migrate its SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA applications to two IBM Power® System E880 servers, which are virtualized using IBM PowerVM® software and run the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications operating system. Its SAP Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA applications were already running on two IBM Power System E870 servers, so in this move the company consolidated its entire SAP estate on the IBM Power platform.
“We chose IBM Power servers because they offer excellent long-term value for money,” explains Leandro Taveira da Silva. “For example, with IBM Power we can activate additional processor cores whenever we require them, so we pay only for the capacity we need. Additionally, we have fewer physical machines so our energy bills are lower, and maintenance and servicing is included in the contract. We found that over five years, the Power servers offer a much lower TCO compared to an x86 architecture.
“Our trusted partner Net Place, an IBM Premier Business Partner, delivered excellent support during this project. Net Place played a key role in the server implementation, preparing the machines, performing the migration, running tests and simulations and finally bringing it into the live production environment – all without a hitch. Thanks to Net Place, we completed the migration with 48 hours of downtime over a weekend – exactly as planned. Net Place has a strong team and a solid technical understanding of IBM technology, which is why we have been working with them since 2012.”
To store its SAP data, Química Amparo relies on an IBM Storwize® V7000 device with 120 TB capacity. The Storwize V7000 solution optimizes price-performance by using IBM Easy Tier® technology to seamlessly move frequently accessed data to high-performance solid-state drives, while shifting rarely used data to economical disks.
Leandro Taveira da Silva elaborates: “We have relied on IBM Storwize V7000 for years, because it provides an extremely reliable, high-performance platform to support our mission-critical SAP environment.”
Achieving a clean sweep
For Química Amparo, upgrading its core SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA applications to the IBM Power platform has delivered a tremendous performance boost.
“We have boosted reporting performance by between 20 and 30 percent on average,” comments Leandro Taveira da Silva. “As a result, employees across the business have rapid, rich insight into the best sales opportunities at their fingertips.”
Química Amparo has found that the IBM Power servers deliver excellent reliability for the mission-critical SAP solutions. As the business expands and data volumes grow, the company can seamlessly scale up its systems to the desired capacity.
Leandro Taveira da Silva remarks: “Critically, the IBM Power servers offer a lower TCO over five years than a comparable x86 architecture, so selecting IBM Power helps us keep overheads low and sharpen our competitive edge.
“With the scale-up installation of SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems, we have cut the time spent on server administration by 30 percent.”
In future, Química Amparo plans to deploy SAP Warehouse Management at its factory that manufactures powdered soap, aiming to boost productivity and accelerate distribution operations. Furthermore, Química Amparo is considering using IBM Watson® to predict sales demand by performing natural-language analysis on structured and unstructured data from SAP, social media, market reports and other systems. In addition, the company will consider using IBM Watson to optimize the search on its intranet so that employees find their desired results first time.
Leandro Taveira da Silva concludes: “The IBM and SAP solutions are helping us to find and follow the most promising avenue to commercial success – putting us on track to hit our target of doubling our share of the Brazilian market within the next few years.”
Química Amparo manufactures and sells products for domestic cleaning, laundry and personal hygiene. Headquartered in Amparo, Brazil, the company exports to over 20 countries across Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and employs 4,600 people.
