Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) spent approximately USD10 million annually to manage vegetation around its power lines. However, its vegetation management system relied heavily on a scheduled trimming regimen, which could miss overgrowth or cut areas unnecessarily.
PEC turned to The Weather Company, an IBM Business, to implement the Vegetation Management – Predict solution. The solution’s AI component helps predict when trees or vines might encroach on power lines, allowing the utility to take preventive action to cut offending vegetation before it becomes a safety hazard. PEC expects to reduce the number and severity of vegetation-related outages, improve safety and reliability and cut overall vegetation management costs.
