Power cuts, floods, malware attacks — how would your business fare in the aftermath of a disaster? To ensure rapid recovery no matter what, clothing manufacturer MAC Mode GmbH & Co. KGaA looked for a way to keep its data secure.
MAC worked with IBM Business Partner NovaStor to implement a disk-to-disk-to-tape data backup solution based on TS3310 tape libraries, keeping business-critical data secure in the event of disaster.
Safeguards valuable business assetsby preventing data loss in the event of a disaster
Adds a strategic “air gap”an extra layer of protection via remote, offline storage of data
Saves time and effortby simplifying data backup management
Business challenge story
Leaving nothing to chance
Flattering cuts, stylish designs and value for money have made MAC jeans and trousers a firm favorite of fashionistas all across Europe, and demand for its products has never been higher. Every year, the company sells six million pairs of trousers and goes through approximately 25 million feet of fabric.
To meet customers’ insatiable appetite for the latest denim trends, MAC must ensure that the IT infrastructure underpinning its production facilities and business operations runs reliably day in, day out — even in the event of disaster.
Stephan Traub, Head of IT and Organization at MAC Mode, takes up the story: “Disaster can strike at any moment, be it in the form of a power cut or a flash flood or a malware attack. There’s not much that we can do to prevent situations like these from happening, but we can take measures to mitigate the impact that they have on our business.”
Looking to strengthen its disaster preparedness, MAC identified data backup and recovery as a key area for improvement. “We wanted to ensure that, if our systems ever were to go down unexpectedly for whatever reason, we would be able to get operations back on track as quickly as possible,” says Traub. “So, we set out in search of robust backup solution.”
After evaluating its options, MAC decided to adopt a disk-to-disk-to-tape backup strategy and teamed up with IBM Business Partner NovaStor to implement a solution based on TS3310 tape library technology and NovaStor DataCenter software.
Traub recalls: “Support from NovaStor was excellent from start to finish. They designed a backup solution that met our unique requirements and worked very closely with the IT team to integrate the solution with our existing infrastructure. We appreciate the fact that we can communicate with them in our own language, and that they are only a few hours’ drive away if we ever need on-site support.”
Today, data backups from MAC’s core VMware environments, which run on three physical servers at the company’s headquarters, are managed using NovaStor DataCenter. Data is backed up first to an on-premises network-attached storage (NAS) environment, and from there to two TS3310 tape libraries.
MAC’s IT team uses the NovaStor DataCenter solution to back up around 300 virtual machines from its VMware environments to the NAS every day, performing a full backup once a week and a differential backup each day.
Traub explains: “Backups are first stored to disk for short-term data availability and then to the IBM TS3310 for cost-effective long-term data storage. NovaStor DataCenter provides a simple, intuitive user interface for managing backups, enabling us to transfer data from disk to tape with ease.”
Ready for anything
With the IBM and NovaStor solution in place, MAC has dramatically boosted business resiliency with added protection against cybercrime. Today, the company can rapidly retrieve and restore data to get operations back on track. Crucially, by storing backups on tape, MAC can ensure that even a natural disaster at its headquarters doesn’t bring its operations to a halt. And enabling an “air gap” to the data with the offline-by-design IBM tape library provides the most secure protection to prevent cybercrime.
Traub comments: “Having a copy of data backups on physical tape drives means that we can easily transport them off-site in the event of a flood or fire at our headquarters. Although a disaster of that kind is unlikely to happen, we need to be prepared for anything. Our data is our most valuable asset, so we must keep it secure.
“NovaStor helped us to develop a comprehensive disaster recovery plan, with different plans of action for different scenarios. Their advice was invaluable, and we now feel confident that we can get our systems back online quickly, no matter what.”
With the TS3310 tape libraries, MAC gained the high level of data protection it craved — without breaking the bank.
“Backups on magnetic tape are available for long-term recovery at low power consumption and low cost per GB,” notes Traub. “This enables us to achieve very high data availability very cost-effectively. And because the NovaStor DataCenter solution makes backup management so quick and easy, the IT team saves time too.”
He concludes: “The combination of IBM TS3310 tape libraries and NovaStor DataCenter software is a real winner. Knowing that we have a robust, scalable data backup solution in place for our VMware environment gives us peace of mind that our business can weather any storm.”
