A vision to transform hardware-based gaming
In the gaming industry, the continual demand for new cutting-edge capabilities creates a corresponding need for increasingly powerful hardware. “Gamers always need the most performance they can get their hands on,” says Ian McLoughlin, Chief Executive Officer and Cofounder of LiquidSky. “But after they invest in a new PC or upgrade, it quickly becomes obsolete.”
To address the challenge, McLoughlin began developing a solution designed to transform the standard gaming model, shifting hosting and delivery from a user’s local hardware to remote cloud infrastructure. For the service to succeed, a powerful cloud platform with a low-latency network was critical. “A few different companies have tried this, and one of the biggest hurdles has been latency,” he says. “You have to be able to deliver video in a certain time frame.”
Hybrid IBM Cloud infrastructure for low-latency delivery
Evaluating leading cloud providers, LiquidSky chose an IBM Cloud hosting solution based on the platform’s highly optimized network, global data center presence and high-performance graphics processing unit (GPU) technology. “We tested Amazon and quite a lot of other cloud platforms, but none of them have the network IBM has,” says McLoughlin. “And with IBM Cloud we can configure bare metal servers exactly the way we want.”

High-powered IBM Cloud infrastructure and expertise proved essential for LiquidSky in bringing its service to gamers around the world. “Without this partnership with IBM, we would not have been able to grow anywhere near as quickly as we have been,” says McLoughlin.
With flexible IBM Cloud resources, LiquidSky can quickly and easily scale its infrastructure as demand for its solution continues to grow. “We can purchase a server and have it on within an hour,” says McLoughlin. “This is a game-changer in terms of scalability that has never really existed in the industry. None of our competitors are auto-scaling like this.”
Plus, LiquidSky drives down costs for delivering its service substantially with IBM Cloud technology. “IBM Cloud gives us the entire server so that we can divide and hypervise the resources to meet our own custom needs,” says McLoughlin. “Compared to Amazon, we can have a lot more users on a server, and that saves us a lot of money. Free bandwidth between data centers is also a huge deal for us in terms of cost.”
