Business challenge story

Meeting growing demand

For conveying engineering to application of the media, modern manufacturing relies on high-precision measurement. D+P, Dosier- u. Prüftechnik GmbH has been designing and manufacturing these highly specialized liquids dosing systems with discharge measurement for more than 30 years, building a strong reputation for quality.

In addition to a wide range of standard solutions, D+P designs and builds customized machinery to meet specific requirements. The company has expanded beyond its core German customer base, attracting sales throughout Europe as well as in the US and China.

A tight team of 20 people at D+P relied on SAP ERP applications, combined with traditional manual processes. But after growing significantly both in its domestic German market and internationally, D+P found that established ways of working were under pressure. Staff completed most tasks manually, and the company was not truly exploiting the capabilities of the SAP software.

Alexander Klug, Technical Lead, Special Purpose Machinery at D+P, Dosier- u. Prüftechnik GmbH, begins: “Gaining more customers means more and bigger orders, which means larger warehouses with significantly more inventory. Keeping track of components, products, orders and finance placed enormous pressure on our traditional operations, and as we reached 60 employees we realized that our predominantly manual ways of working were no longer feasible.

“We understood that SAP ERP software provided digital processes that could solve our challenges, and that would require some means of scaling up our existing solution. Our existing solution was hosted by a third-party vendor on fixed infrastructure that would be enormously expensive to upgrade; how could we transition to a fully digital way of working easily, quickly and reliably?”

With the SAP ERP solution on IBM Services for Managed SAP Applications, we enjoy digital workflows that cut significant time and cost from the business.

Transformation story

Digitizing core business processes

D+P consulted its long-term technology partner, Zimmerer GmbH, which proposed migrating D+P’s SAP landscape to IBM Services for Managed SAP Applications. By switching to a cloud solution, D+P would avoid the capital cost of investing in new infrastructure and manpower, and enable a flexible, scalable solution capable of handling potential future growth simply by requesting additional capacity.

Zimmerer migrated D+P’s SAP ERP applications without changes to the Managed SAP Applications platform, which also includes resiliency and backup services. Zimmerer configured the platform to allow D+P to manage peak workloads with automated scale-up and scale-back capabilities, ensuring the company pays only for the capacity it needs.

Hans-Werner Zimmerer, CEO of Zimmerer GmbH, adds: “We specialize in providing managed SAP ERP services to small and medium-sized businesses. This makes Managed SAP Applications the ideal foundation for our services, as it ticks all the boxes in terms of scalability, security, and performance. The SAP ERP applications run in IBM data centers, so we don’t have to worry about any of the back-end infrastructure management or maintenance – we can focus all our time and energy on delivering the best service to clients like D+P.”

Alexander Klug states: “We’ve been working with Zimmerer for many years now, and we trust their advice. The fact that Managed SAP Applications came with their seal of approval convinced us to make the move. Zimmerer took care of everything behind the scenes and ensured a seamless switchover from our existing vendor. It all went without a hitch, so much so that we weren’t even aware when the migration actually took place, and our SAP ERP applications have been running smoothly ever since.”

Boosting efficiency

D+P has been proactively replacing its manual, paper-based ways of working with the digital workflows embedded within SAP ERP. For example, finance and controlling are now handled entirely by the SAP solutions, and D+P has added Project Management to its SAP application suite.

Embracing digitization and SAP ERP applications has transformed D+P’s operational efficiency and commercial success. Alexander Klug remarks: “D+P has achieved four-fold growth in business volumes in the last six years while only doubling headcount.”

Switching to Managed SAP Applications enables D+P to truly take advantage of its SAP ERP solutions. As D+P launches new SAP ERP applications, IBM Cloud scales up quickly and easily to manage increased workload.

Partnering with Zimmerer has made all the difference for D+P. Zimmerer’s fully managed service, based on Managed SAP Applications, ensures round-the-clock availability and optimized performance for D+P’s increasingly business-critical SAP ERP solution.

Alexander Klug comments: “Previously when a customer rang up to ask whether we had a part in stock, it took up to 20 minutes to find out. Staff checked paper forms or even looked for the part in the warehouse. By the end of 2018, employees will be able to access the latest inventory information in just a few clicks with SAP ERP, and the entire interaction takes less than two minutes – 90 percent faster than before. With the SAP ERP solution on Managed SAP Applications, we enjoy digital workflows that cut significant time and cost from the business.

“The less time we need to spend managing our SAP landscape, the more we can dedicate to serving customers. Zimmerer provides a fully managed service, and in combination with digital workflows, we estimate that running SAP on Managed SAP Applications saves D+P some 35 hours a week.

“Using Managed SAP Applications enables D+P to do more, faster – streamlining workflows, improving efficiency and enabling us to keep operations running smoothly – as we continue to grow our business.”
